Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

We are DVC and bagged a room at the VGC in early August. First thing- the building and lobby and overall vibe are beautiful. The bell person who greeted us was outstanding, Sorry didn’t get his name but he’s 50s, slim guy, and extremely talkative and helpful, the true ‘Disney Difference’ type employee. Check in was a very slow and lengthy experience although the lady was very nice. Queues at 3pm. This could be speeded up. Room wasn’t obtained until just after 4. We had a disappointing outlook room, ground floor, corner, facing directly at back entrance to Californian Adventure. Security guards stood around and no real barrier for privacy so never sat on patio. However, we realised the room had some advantages in that you could be in the park in about 40 steps. Room was nice enough. Would I pay over $1000 a night for it cash? Not worth it but booked on points. They are getting so they need a refurb although still in decent shape. It was all very dark though, perhaps not helped by room position in bottom corner of hotel. Craftsman’s bar was a bit disappointing for food. It was OK quality but very, very slow at coming out. Mine was comped. The bar itself with live music is lovely though and cocktails good. Pool is beautiful but at the same time disappointing. It’s disappointing because there are not enough sun loungers. This is partly due to Disney greed, who have turned over about a third of the already too small pool area to paying cabanas. This is partly due to lack of management. They are meant to have wristbands on people, but half did not have them and half the time there were no staff on the gate to put them on. I personally witnessed at 8am a family coming in the front of the hotel who didn’t seem to be staying there (very easy to get in despite needing a key card as the gate is constantly opened onto the sidewalk) who I saw walk into the pool area, they had no card and waited for gate to open and went in. Disney can see from the reviews on Tripadvisor this pool seating issue is a major problem. They need to do something about it. If that includes removing the cabana area and taking a hit on upcharges, they need to do it. They need to get really strict on pool management and wrist bands. When you are paying this much for a hotel, not being able to get sun beds is totally unacceptable. Shame as pool itself is lovely and live music even in the day. The characters also seemed to plead daily at around 4 pm for a pool party. Gym great. The DVC team here here we’re very nice people. Obviously location is fantastic.

My husband and I snuck away for a quick trip to Disney. It happened to be the weekend that Disneyland closed down so we didn’t get to fulfill the entire trip. We opted to fly home a day early as we didn’t have much else to do in the rain, during the closures of activities. We asked one of the young men at the desk if we could check out early, and what their policy was on issuing credits for nights. (We were ok if we had to lose the last night, as it was our choice to leave early, but was curious if they had any exceptions during the pandemic time.) The first young man we spoke with told us that since we booked with another hotel site, they couldn’t do anything and to contact them. With a 4 hour wait, we were gonna just take the loss. Upon checkout the next morning, the front desk was able to edit our stay and credit us back a night, without even mentioning how we booked and told us that with all that was going on, they would handle it on their end. It did take him a few hours to get it all handled, but we did not mind at all. We appreciated the help during a time that is out of all our control. Because of this hospitality, we would stay here again. The room smelled clean, and the bed was comfortable. I wish they had more blankets and pillows offered in their rooms but not a deal breaker. The free breakfast was ok, pretty standard but the coffee was good and that is truly what matters in the morning. 😊 The location is about a 20 min walk to the park, depending on route you take. We didn’t mind but at the end of the night it felt longer, but for the price, and being just two adults, we managed. We have stayed here before and have been overall pleased both times. We would book here again on any future Disney trips.

The Location of this hotel is awesome. The customer service is great. The room was clean and the bed was good. However the parking here is horrible. They have to move cars around so you can move your own . They are nice about it, but this is a huge inconvenience if you want to go anywhere you don’t have to walk to. Luckily we only had to move ours twice. The rooms are way to light at night. You might as well leave your lights on because it will seem like you did. The doors are not sealed correctly so light and cold air come through, luckily the air conditioner/ heater to work well. Also the no breakfast is a disappointment but it is what it is. We did not use the pool, it was to cold and rainy but it looked clean and decent.Overall if you are staying here for the location and a very easy walk to Disneyland you are good to go, If you are looking for better amenities this is probably not your hotel. I would stay here again for the location.

If your going to Disneyland this hotel is perfect. Your just across from the entrance and closer than some official Disney hotels. It also has parking which I was really worried about. It was so close we could go back to the room for an hour at midday rest recharge phones and go back in. Will stay again if going to Disney. Only issue no hairdryer in the room and it can be a little noisy at night as people come back from the park.

It’s cheap in Los Angeles, and in the distance is the bustling Disney amusement park. One hour from Universal Studios, one hour from the beach, and one hour from Hollywood. There is hot water at the front desk and there is no breakfast. Good health. Parking is free and no appointment is required. A parking permit will be provided at the front desk and will be available in the car. I give a tip of 1 yuan a day. The big bag was placed in the house and the clothes bought from Ole were not lost. But in Los Angeles, you still have to pay special attention.

First-class environmental facilities, the hotel is very new. But the credit card charges randomly. Since the order included breakfast for 4, why was breakfast charged again? The service attitude of the Asian female leader at breakfast is very poor. She was told that she can only eat cold food and no hot food... In fact, there is no hot food at all. It is not as good as the domestic three-star breakfast. Where does the confidence to coax come from?

We’ve stayed at this hotel for the last seven years, each time we go to Disneyland. It’s definitely cheaper than staying on the park’s property, and the walk is no more than 10 minutes. However, despite our family being loyal customers, we have stayed there for the last time, and won’t be returning. As I mentioned, yes, it’s cheaper to stay here than on Disneyland property, but don’t be fooled. It is by no means CHEAP, just CHEAPER. You are still paying quite a hefty price for what has, sadly, become a mediocre at best hotel. In all the years we’ve stayed here, the hotel, to my knowledge, has never been updated— and it shows. Unfortunately, the hotel is now on the shabby side. The rooms are small, as is the bathroom. Annoyingly, they no longer offer maid service each day, and have downgraded to once every third day. While I understand pandemic policies, we had JUST come from staying at the beautiful nearby Westin Anaheim, which does offer daily maid service. Next, a word on their air conditioning units. The last 2 times we’ve stayed, the units have been unbearably loud — so much so that at the height of summer, we opted to keep it off in order for us to be able to sleep. I asked to trade rooms, thinking we’d just gotten unlucky, but it seems each room has the identical problem. That goes back to the updates I feel the hotel needs to make. Lastly, unlike some of the other hotels nearby, there is no free continental breakfast. Look, Disneyland is expensive. A free breakfast would go a long way with guests. No need for it to be fancy— something small would suffice. As I mentioned, we also stayed at the Westin Anaheim this trip. It’s slightly more expensive, but it feels much more luxurious — and it’s nearly as quick to walk to the parks. That’ll be our choice from now on.
