The recent heatwaves have been so horrible that one I knew I needed to go to hold for the night booked this hotel purely because of it advertising air conditioning. I'd also requested a quiet room, which the person who checked me in noted and my reservation. What I got, however, was a room where the air con was preset to only go down to 19 and kept cutting out - requiring me to keep turning it back on. Despite repeatedly doing this, the room was still much too warm and uncomfortable for me and opening as the window wasn't really an option as it was warm and sticky outside, plus it was noisy from people out in the courtyard. The worst part, however, was the incredible disregard of the way I was treated both by the person on duty behind the desk and the duty manager. The former actually hung up the phone on me and instead of apologising, the latter suggested that I find a different hotel at 8 pm (and also made a very rude comment about people from the country which they wrongly assumed that I was from). After having travelled many hours to get to Brighton that morning, then working and only checking in that evening, I was so exhausted, upset and angry that I went back to the room (which both staff said was perfectly cool despite my saying it wasn't) only to find horrible old blood stains on the duvet and a headboard that looked like someone had scraped some of the material off. There was, however, one bright note - which was the excellent breakfast buffet.
