Abbots Grange is a very special place, probably unique among the dozens of higher-end country-house-places we've stayed at in England, France and Italy over the decades. There are not many places where you stay in the original part of a manor house built in the 14th century! It is extremely beautiful with well-maintained rooms and public spaces and gardens, and the setting if one wants an 'in-town' setting is hard to beat given the privacy and quiet. It was like staying at a friend's country residence - if one were lucky enough to have such friends! The history of the place since the 19th century, knowing one might have been sitting by the fire sipping wine or fine Scotch in the same chair used by Monet or Henry James, was palpable. The service from every member of the staff was outstanding - friendly, helpful, caring and competent. Breakfasts were great. Be aware the rooms are all quite distinctly different, some have some quirky features that might or might not be appealing to one, so check each of them carefully before deciding. The staff were most helpful to us in that regard.
