This hotel is quite difficult to rate because it has both good and bad points.
On the positive side, the location is convenient if you're visiting Cambridge for a day or just need a place to stay overnight. The hotel is a converted old house, so the rooms are surprisingly spacious. The breakfast was also good, and the restaurant staff were very friendly.
However, the hotel is very dated. I don't mind the old-fashioned décor, but the facilities are also outdated. The bathroom was very hard to rate.... there wasn't even a proper shower, just a bathtub with separate hot and cold taps. If you only wanted a quick shower, you had to fill a cup with hot water, then cold water, mix them together, and pour it over yourself. It felt like stepping back in time.
One thing future guests should definitely know is not to arrive after 10 pm. Reception closes at 10, and they don't leave your key in a key box. Instead, you have to walk about 10 minutes to another hotel to check in and collect your key. So if you've been travelling all day and finally arrive at 10 pm without a car, you'll have to spend 20 mins to walk there and back before you can even get into your room, which isn't the best start to the evening.
Afterwards, I noticed that this is officially a two-star hotel... and suddenly everything made a lot more sense. If you keep your expectations in line with the rating, it's an acceptable place for a short stay, especially if space and breakfast are more important to you than modern facilities.
