Peregrine House

Peregrine House

Canterbury|0.2km from city center
I booked to stay at Peregrine House, which is an annex of another hotel. Owing to a change of ownership, it was all rather confusing, but worked out very well in the end. I booked for Peregrine House, and was told it was on Hawks Lane, and I was to get my keys from Castle Hotel.. Then, immediately, I received another email saying I had to collect my key instead from Pilgrim's Hotel, The Friars! I turned up at Pilgrim's Hotel and the young lady at Reception was very nice, and explained the confusion was due to change of ownership that week. I then went to my room in Peregrine Hotel. The sign I saw was Hawks Lane Lodge, and later I saw that there is another sign above that saying Peregrine House. So when they get that sorted, it will be great!! Peregrine Hotel is down a little lane, off the main High Street, and was a bit dark at night. I am a lady on my own. But Peregrine House is ok once inside. The door is secure, and it is very clean inside. I stayed in Room 4 upstairs. It was very quiet and the window looked out on to an inside courtyard below. No street or other noise. Furniture in the room is dated, but ok. Room was a single, and the bed was ok but mattress could do with a firmer one instead. Bedding comfortable and clean. I was however rather cold in the night, in spite of a duvet on the bed, but there was no extra blanket. The en suite was fine, clean. Shower, toilet, basin, and shampoos, soap etc provided. In the room, there is a kettle, tea, coffee, biscuits, a nice decent sized mug, Also, a hairdryer. There is a small TV on the wall. One of the ceiling light bulbs had blown, and the strip light over the basin did not work. I left a message for housekeeping. Wonderful big, soft, cosy bathsheet towel! Clean carpet. Would stay again. Would recommend...as long as you realise that Reception and breakfast is at Pilgrim's hotel (opposite the Marlow Theatre). ”Hot” breakfast at Pilgrims (included in my room rate) was ”ok”. I chose the Vegetarian option and declined the egg. But it was just two rather dry vegetarian ”sausages”, a ready bought heated rosti, a few mushrooms, a small spoonful of wilted spinach, a couple of spoonfuls of beaked beans and a tomato. Dining room there at Pilgrim's almost too quiet! Toast, croissants etc available at buffet bar. A GOOD POINT IS THAT YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR BAG AFTER CHECK OUT, IN A LOCKED CUPBOARD AT PILGRIM'S, SO YOU DON'T NEED TO WALK AROUND ALL DAY WITH IT!

Castle House Hotel

Canterbury|0.62km from city center
The best thing about this hotel was the location - couldn’t fault it. Unfortunately, there were lots of aspects of the hotel that we felt just weren’t ok for somewhere charging these prices. The main issue was the staff, from the moment we arrived, it was clear that most were disinterested in their job. We were disappointed to find that the breakfast was continental only (not something made clear on ***********). We asked for toast, they asked what kind we’d like and we said white. When it didn’t come we asked again and they said there was no white. Which is fine, but the same happened the following morning too. The hairdryer didn’t work in our room. My partner went to reception for them to plug it in (it worked), and hand it back to him saying it was fine. We tried again in our room, it didn’t work in any of the sockets. He went back and overheard the manager saying ‘what’s he complaining for - it works!’ We were then advised to not ‘wave it around’ or ‘use a brush to style with.’ The only way we could get it to work was if he held the plug into the wall while I used it.. and then it became incredibly hot after 30 seconds. I don’t understand the stand-off attitude and why we couldn’t be given a different hairdryer - it clearly was faulty and they knew it. The room we were in was large but with only one small window (and the smallest tv I’ve ever seen!) I echo what another reviewer says - in the night it was SO hot I couldn’t breathe. Awful ventilation. We also had a drippy tap and the bathroom door only shut when slammed. When we left, the staff were sat having breakfast and didn’t even come over to the reception to take the keys or ask how our stay had been. Overall I feel that this hotel was once probably lovely, however maybe the owners have stepped back a bit and the people they've left to run it just don’t really care. It’s also very interesting how the hotel has no presence on this page - not even to acknowledge reviews, let alone reply. Says a lot!

Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel

The hotel is very good. In downtown Canterbury, there is a parking lot for free parking, the surrounding environment is good, and the shape of the small house is also very distinctive. The rooms are clean and have special features than the average economy hotel. The price is slightly more expensive. Breakfast on the first floor restaurant, English breakfast.
Hampton by Hilton Canterbury

Hotel was in a fantastic location, clean, modern and staff were extremely friendly. What sadly let it down was the awful mattress in the room. It was springy, lumpy, noisy and appeared to be sinking. Was extremely uncomfortable and me and my partner found it very difficult to sleep. Woke up with aches and stiffness every morning. The cooked breakfast also wasn’t great, although plenty of choice on the continental option. Such a shame for the bad experiences we had as the hotel was otherwise pleasant.
Greyfriars Lodge Canterbury

The location of this accommodation is perfect. Just 10-15 minutes walk from Canterbury West Train Station. There is a Sainsbury's local at the corner and the main street is just 2 minutes walk. The host is very nice and friendly. The room is clean, bed sheet and duvet smell good. For amenities, there are only hand wash and body wash, you have to bring your own stuffs. It's a good experience to stay in this accomodation.
The Coach House

I reckon it was the cleanest hotel I had ever stayed in. We had a room no 6 with large, very comfortable bed, kettle, tea and coffee and lovely big bathroom. There's a parking in front of the building so we had no trouble with the car. The owner kindly phoned and gave us instructions how to check in in case he wasn't there when we arrived. So our check in and out went absolutely without any problem. The location is fantastic, few minutes walk to main attractions, river trips, shops and places to eat. I highly recommend The Coach House.

I felt i had to write a review about the recently opened restaurant. It was both excellent service and the meal was superb. I enjoyed the grilled ribeye steak dressed with chimichurri served on a bed of mash potatoes, honeygarlic roasted carrrots with grilled asparagus wrapped in Parma ham. All this for £24, excellent value for money. I shall definitely be returning for seconds !

returned for a third time to this lovely hotel. last visit was a few years ago. it’s in a great location in walking distance to the city centre. the hotel itself is spotlessly clean and the decor is traditional. When we arrived we were greeted by Bogdan who is extremely helpful and goes the extra mile. we were able to park in the car park even before check in so we could go out to have lunch which was really helpful. our room was cosy and very clean. we made use of the pool which adds an extra something special to this hotel. it was a bit chilly in the pool but it was november! we had treatments in the spa facility . really relaxing massages by the two ladies who work there. had a great night sleep. the beds are comfy. nice bathroom and the shower was good. we had breakfast and could choose full english and continental as it’s a buffet style breakfast . hopefully will return here as it really is a great place to stay and it’s good value for money too. a hidden gem!
