Mills House Charleston, Curio Collection by Hilton

Charleston|0.55km from Candlefish
The hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of downtown, within walking distance of many sights, and just steps to a variety of good restaurants and shopping. We were upgraded to a junior suite, which was a beautifully appointed and very comfortable corner room. Oddly, the room did not have a microwave, and the refrigerator barely kept things cool, and not at all cold. You can self-park in an adjacent public garage, or valet, which we did. Valet parking cost $49 a day; the bellman advised that this was cheaper than self-parking, but we did not confirm this. Although the valets cautioned that it would take up to 30 minutes to retrieve our car, it generally required only 15-20 minutes, depending on how busy they were. Pay close attention to the instructions for calling for your car; they are not clear. There is a cafe off the lobby that serves the strongest coffee my wife ever tasted. The cafe has a decent selection of snacks, yogurts, small sandwiches, muffins, juices, sodas, etc. There also is a good restaurant and bar in the hotel. We did not dine there, but had drinks in the adjacent courtyard (where you can have lunch or dinner), in front of a fireplace. The staff was uniformly helpful. Our room rate was $350/night, plus almost $50 in taxes. There also is an annoying ”Destination Amenity Fee of $30 per day, plus a ”Charleston Destination Fee” of $2 per day. Despite the expense, we definitely will stay here again.

French Quarter Inn

Charleston|0.44km from Candlefish
We stayed at the French Quarter Inn for our 45th anniversary and right from the start fell in love. All guests have champagne to greet them, but the front desk supervisor, Tahliha, made us feel so special with a bottle of champagne and a gift waiting for us when we arrived. Seryna, at reception helped with our numerous questions and requests, always with a smile. The rooms were very clean and decidedly upscale, with marble bathrooms with Deep Steep personal products, buttery high count sheets, sound machine, a pillow menu (I tried every single one) and the linen spray was divine. Each room has a mini fridge, safe, comfy chair with ottoman and desk with stationary. The evening wine and cheese reception was just perfect after a day of exploring. Warm cookies, ice cold milk and port wine in the lobby at night, were the perfect end to your day. Turn down, by Ann, at night was the ultimate in being pampered. We walked into our room with romantic music playing, bed turned down with our choice of pillows, bottles of water with fresh ice in the bucket, chocolates, a note telling us the weather and sunrise/sunset times for the next day. Over the top was glass cleaning wipes on my my iPad! Breakfast was always delicious and filling, do not miss the gluten free lemon breakfast biscuits. During the day there were always cold beverages and the candy bar to give you a lift. The French Quarter is in the perfect location, close to everything and even provide bicycles to their guests. We have been so spoiled and cannot wait to return!

Francis Marion Hotel

Staff at the front desk was a bit dismissive and parking costs $20/night. Breakfast not included but there’s a restaurant on site. Pros: - great location, close to attractions, restaurants, shops - Wifi works well - rooms are relatively clean however I found a few hairs here and there - rooms are spacious enough - Check-in is at 4pm officially but our room was ready at 2pm so we could check in - mini fridge in room - the hotel is nicely furnished and decorated - 24-hour fitness center - 2 complimentary bottles of water - Coffee machine in the room Cons: - staff at the front desk could’ve been friendlier - bed too soft and pillows too thick - A/C didn’t work properly—the room was either ice cold or hot

Our stay in this hotel was a real mixed bag. The location is great, the staff friendly and the outdoor dining atmosphere superb. The room location was disappointing, we were next to the utility closet for the maids and it caused us to wake up much earlier and abruptly. We didn’t blame the maid service since they were just doing their job but management should have already been aware of the annoying noise level this would cause their guests. Also the drain in the sink bathroom backed up so easily and the draining extremely slow. Was it worth the price vs value? no. Lots of other hotels in same area for less cost and locations are good.

I can't say enough great things about our experience with the hotel and staff during our work conference. The planning experience with Julia was pleasant and easy! The food for our cocktail reception was fabulous. And the attentiveness overall and attention to detail we received from Rudy was unbelievable! When Rudy met an employee one day and the next remembered his name, that truly makes an impression! I feel like we were needy during our room changes for the different activities and meetings we had but Rudy and the staff never once made us feel like we were putting them out. Never a snippy or rude comment, always greeted with a smile and what can we do for you!

Finally an updated Hilton property downtown Charleston that fits the budget for business trips. Location is ideal on Meeting & only 2 blocks from King St. Entire property is newly renovated which puts it above Hampton Inn and Embassy Suites in my book. Valet parking available. Staff was super friendly. I didn’t eat a meal on site so I cannot comment on food. Who wants to eat at a hotel when you’re in Charleston? :) Would definitely recommend this property.
