Reviews of Gougane Barra Hotel

I was recently introduced to Gougane Barra Hotel on my 12‑day Vagabond Tour. Unfortunately, we only had one night there, but Neil and Katy made it truly memorable. Our guide, Danny, had told us a lot about them—and he was spot on. Neil greeted the group, checked us in, hosted drinks, tended bar before dinner, and then took wonderful care of us in the dining room. Katy came out to meet the guests, and I was lucky enough to chat with her about dinner options—she made the perfect recommendation. She’s so friendly that Neil eventually had to pull her away and send her back to the kitchen! After dinner, several guests purchased her cookbook, and she took the time to sign and personalize each one. A top‑night, and one I hope to experience again someday. My room was comfortable—small and quaint, perfect for solo travel. It’s an older building, so floors may squeak and you might hear your neighbors a little, but don’t let that detract from the beauty of the experience.

This hotel is tucked into one of the most exquisite settings in Ireland. This is a MUST on your itinerary. The staff is amazing with their care and personalized service, and the dining experience here will not disappoint. The view out of your room is breathtaking, and whether strolling forest paths, hiking mountains, or cycling, this National Park is not to be missed on your trip. They have an adorable little pub to enjoy a celebratory pint after your adventures, too.

Our 3rd visit this year to this wonderful family run hotel in this little paradise of Gougane Barra. Totally hooked on this beautiful hotel after numerous visits these last few years. If you are searching for a very comfortable family run hotel with excellent food and located in spectacular scenery, in a historical location which also boasts a large forest on its doorstep with extensive walking possibilities, and welcomed by wonderful staff, then this is your place! 3 trips already booked for 2026! I was very fortunate to stay in this incredible family run hotel in October. This hotel, located between Ballylickey & Macroom is an Áit speisialta ( special place), family owned for at least 5 generations. I am in awe of how it is so beautifully run and managed. The Lacey’s are indeed custodians of Ireland’s language (ár teanga), traditions ( traidisiúin), music (ceol) and history (stair). I had a lovely room looking out onto the fields and mountains. Neil & Katy the owners are hands on and demonstrably very passionate about adding the personal touch. The relationship they have with their staff is so beautiful to observe, the respect is a two way street, the engagement between the two is rare these days. The staff are so friendly and really attentive, they are happy doing their job and it’s so lovely to see. Katys food is truly 5 star, the quality and presentation is amazing. I stayed here for 6 nights whilst attending their daughter Jane’s immersive Irish course, this too was truly memorable and dóchreidte( unbelievable) , I so enjoyed it. Beidh mé ar ais = I will be back next year . Bhí a lán caint craic agus ceol ann. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.

We (family of 4) recently spent a night at this hotel. It was like my childhood memories all came flashing back. Set in stunning settings next to the lake opposite the beautiful church. We had a 3 course meal in the restaurant. The view alone from the windows makes it a great experience. BUT in all honesty,the food was superb! It was absolutely delicious and so beautifully presented. The staff and owner are soo friendly and helpful. I will 100% be back again. I look forward to it already.

5* dining experience with the most amazing food and friendly professional service. Highly recommend! Not to mention the moat picture perfect setting. Can't wait to return next year when they reopen for their season.

Charming hotel in a stunning, isolated lake-front location. The owners and staff are very available, friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the bar, and the restaurant was exceptional for dinner and breakfast. Our upstairs room with attached bathroom provided all that we needed. Our one-night stay was a highlight of our Ireland trip. Highest recommendation!

Wonderful time down in Gougane Barra. The location is superb and very peaceful. The staff are wonderful and extremely helpful and welcoming. The food for dinner and breakfast was exceptional and the room was lovely with a great view of the lake. Would visit again without hesitation.

Beautiful location, private and so peaceful. Late fall visit meant turning off the radiator and opening the windows to get the room to a comfy temp. Bed was fine, room was tight, bathroom was even more tight. It’s very basic, but we slept well. Upstairs was nice because no one was walking above us, might be noisy downstairs? Staff was friendly and helpful. Recommend staying here, but remember it’s a basic set up, nothing fancy.

The hotel was beautiful with one of the best views in Ireland. The staff was wonderful. The owners were very hospitable. The food in the restaurant was to die for. Delicious with a beautiful presentation. Would highly recommend.

This hotel is situated in one of the most beautiful settings in Ireland. While the staff were very welcoming, the room we stayed in was cold. We requested the heating be turned on and received a portable heater but unfortunately this seemed to be faulty and didn’t work. We are in the restaurant and the food was fabulous.

Absolutely amazing experience! We stayed here as part of our Vagabond tour and it did not disappoint. Katy and Neil were absolutely amazing. Katy is the executive chef and the food was by far the best we had on our trip! Neil took care of us very well and presented the menu telling us where all the local ingredients were sourced from. Felt like we were at a 5 star restaurant with full service. Worth the money!

Our favorite place to stay and eat on our week long tour. The location of this hotel is special and beautiful. Family run by a husband and wife and service is their specialty. The rooms were well kept and the dining was exceptional. Most of their menu is locally sourced ingredients and the preparation and service was 5 star. I wish we had more than one night.
