A wonderful stay, a beautiful place in a very nice location. Every detail carefully and thoughtfully prepared, incredibly friendly, attentive and generous staff (including the super interesting and enthusiastic Brian Linden himself, with whom we would have enjoyed chatting for many hours). The morning tour of the old town and market was a definite highlight, and we were grateful for the help organising a very early check-out (with a packed breakfast).

Linden Centre isn't just a place to stay; it's a highlight of the trip itself. Everywhere you look, there are exquisite collectibles. Ms. Peng Dan's bilingual explanations (Chinese and English) were incredibly thorough and engaging – I loved them! Mr. Linden himself was also there, busy chatting with us, so much so that he didn't get a chance to eat his bowl of egg fried rice. The handicrafts sold at the center are beautifully curated, a cut above the mass-produced items you find elsewhere. We also had lunch at the Rice Paddy Restaurant, which was delicious.

Years ago, when I first visited Dali, I heard the story of Mr. Linden and this old mansion and always dreamed of staying here to experience it firsthand. This time, I finally fulfilled that wish, and I was even lucky enough to meet Mr. Linden in the courtyard! When he learned we were from Nanjing, he happily told us he had studied at the中美文化交流中心 (Sino-American Culture Exchange Center) at Nanjing University in '87 and '88, and had many fond memories of Nanjing. This instantly made us marvel at the wonders of fate – Mr. Linden's timeless encounter with this old mansion, and our own timeless encounter with Mr. Linden and this mansion. So, this isn't just a house or a hotel; it's a spiritual home, a place of shared understanding for Mr. Linden and his guests, our collective beautiful home! The 'Old Mansion Exploration' and 'Market Stroll' activities were excellent, and our guide was wonderful! I regret missing out on the afternoon tea, but the restaurant's dishes were delicious, and the breakfast's Ersi noodles and beef with rice were also fantastic!

Staying here in December, there were no wheat fields swaying, but the hotel service made my trip to Xizhou full of pleasant surprises. I really loved the hotel's location and learned about the history of the Yang Residence. The service was excellent, and the courtyard is perfect for rural travelers looking for a peaceful break. The service was genuinely warm and welcoming.

We loved our stay at the linden centre. The property is beautifully renovated and maintained and every time new details can be discovered. It feels very special to stay here. The terrace is very peaceful. We were very lucky to meet the owners and learn more about the architecture and history. Unfortunately the market tour wasn’t available on our stay so I would recommend checking in advance. It is also worth noting that the centre organises a lot of international art and culture workshops which is something worth supporting. We would highly recommend staying here !

The hotel is located in suzhou town of Dali. The location is near the edge of the old town but at the same time it is more quiet and peaceful. The hotel staff is very helpful and friendly. They came to greet us at the parking lot outside the town and bring us to the hotel. The hotel staff help us to book our restaurants in Guangzhou which is great. I like the hotel due to its history and architecture and it is definitely something to remember.

The property is very special and beautiful. The room was very clean and thoughtfully decorated. All the staff was incredibly kind and helpful. The bar is a nice place to relax and the restaurant was very good for dinner. The breakfast was somewhat underwhelming, especially considering everything else the hotel offers.

The Linden Centre is located in Xizhou, a Bai minority village with thousands of years of history in Dali. Situated between the foothills of the towering Cangshan mountains and the boundlessly blue Erhai lake (3 km), close to Dali Old Town (17km), Xizhou enjoys beautiful scenery and a pleasant spring climate all year round.
The Linden Centre was originally built as a private residence by Yang Pinxiang, a local businessman trading on the Tea-Horse Road in the early 20th century. The site has been carefully restored to its original grandeur, preserving the traditional materials, artwork, and wood carvings and still includes three courtyards and a lush private garden and terrace overlooking rice paddies beyond the Centre’s walls.
All areas of the hotel have access to free Wi-Fi, and each room is equipped with traditionally Chinese bedding arrangements and locally crafted wooden furniture, an electric kettle, air conditioning, hairdryer, bathrobes, and a full private bathroom. In order to preserve this national heritage site, we have a designated smoking deck in the back courtyard but do not allow smoking inside the hotel.
At The Linden Centre, the magnificent history of Chinese culture is accessible to every guest. We stand apart from other boutique hotels by prioritizing experience over luxury and promoting a new model for experiential travel. We believe heritage protection to be a substantial component for a culturally sustainable business. The Linden Centre’s goal is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and culture between our guests and the traditions and history of our community.
After check-in at the Linden Centre, you will experience more than just a hotel room. The Linden Centre has 16 rooms and a variety of warm public spaces to make you feel at home. To facilitate a more in-depth and comprehensive understanding of Xizhou and the traditions of the Bai people we offer several interactive activities like a walking tour of the morning market, calligraphy classes, a local
