Great location near centre of town. Our room was relaxing quiet and comfortable. We work up to bird song! Breakfast was super with lots of options in a beautiful dining room . Ellie and Helen who looked after us on our visit Were lovely helpful and really engaging and made us feel special and welcome. Wish we had discovered this hotel sooner. Can highly recommend.

We had a brilliant stay at this hotel. It’s perfectly located opposite the cathedral and just a short, lovely walk into the heart of Durham’s sights. We arrived early, but Jess was so warm and welcoming and said we could stored our bags while we went for a wander Our room and bathroom were very spacious and had all the creature comforts that one could ask for and more . Breakfast was served in a light airy dining space with beautiful crisp tablecloth - which I absolutely love. The whole ambience of the hotel is wonderful and idyllic, making it a truly special place. I wish we could’ve stayed longer. I would not hesitate in recommending this if you want to have a nice wonderful stay

Just come back from a wonderful stay at 40 Winks in Durham. George was a brilliant host and makes the best breakfasts. Our room was stunning - we stayed in The Gala Room - and the location is excellent. The bed was also VERY comfortable. We even managed to get parked outside. We will definitely be back, thanks again for a great stay.

We spend six glorious nights at 40 Winks Guest House to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we were instantly made to feel royally welcome. Our suite overlooking the river Wear and Durham Cathedral had been prepared and decorated in style with balloons, chocs etc. - see photo. Very comfortable spacious room, large bathroom with bath, stand alone shower and more than enough space for anyone. The manager George was particularly helpful with advice about the city, parking restrictions etc as well as being responsible for some wonderful breakfasts. 40 Winks will suit people who want a quiet, peaceful place to stay. Five suites and four other bedrooms give it a quite an exclusive vibe and together with the dark, tasteful decoration in the staircase and landings it is quite sumptuous. Are there any downsides? I guess if you have mobility issues the stairs may not be easy as the property has no lift because it is a period townhouse and there is only on street parking - expensive outside but much cheaper in a side road. Listening to the soft bells of Durham Cathedral drifting across the river Wear as you wake or go to sleep however is completely relaxing. Highly recommended.

Perfect tranquil location for the city,easy walking access to everywhere.Like staying in a private house.Lovely room and facilities and breakfast.Oh and there’s George the manager who is very helpful and adds the perfect personal touch.There is parking but on street and you have to pay.

This hotel is simply stunning! We loved every part of it. We stayed in the Gala room, which was beautiful. The roll top bath in the large bay window with views of Durham Cathedral was very special. Breakfast was excellent and a real treat. A special thank you to all the hardworking staff, who were so kind and welcoming. We really liked chatting with the lovely George (hotel manager). He was so friendly and he told us about the history of the building, which was really interesting. We will definitely be returning and 100% recommend this place.

Breakfast Room appears a bit dated. Not any bilingual staff on duty. Some of the information may be out of date as the only languages available appear to be English. Breakfast was okay. Same faces on duty all the time. Nice bed and breakfast.

A beautiful hotel with friendly, helpful staff. Room was very comfortable. Excellent breakfast too.
