We booked a room to stay after our work night out. The city seemed a nice value option. We were blown away when we went into the penthouse suite. It’s huge! Two bedrooms, entrance area and kitchen! Fans and heaters provided and even a bowl of sweets on the table. What a bargain! I will 100% return with my husband and son!

Went for the weekend for our anniversary, to go round some pubs. When we got there we had a very friendly greeting, she showed us everything we needed and said if we had anything questions feel free to ask. She also gave us a couple of cards for the pub downstairs, because we were guests after so many you get a free drink! The room itself was lovely, spacious and homely, smart tv to watch what you want and a good size bathroom with a rainfall shower and a bath. Downstairs in the pub, a good lively atmosphere had the six nations on, music afterwards and drinks were cheap. Great location right in the centre, good value for money. Would definitely recommend and will be staying again when we go back to Durham.

Really cold rooms , no heating on. Although rooms were clean the beds are not good. Feels like you were sinking in middle . Therefore wouldn’t stay again. .

Brilliant and friendly welcome! First impressions count and we definitely appreciated the friendliness at check-in. We had 3 single rooms booked. First thing to say is that from a price point perspective this place is exceptionally good value for money. Under £60 for our advance booking, the rooms were comfortable and I want to emphasise that they were spotless. I consider myself to be well travelled and the cleanliness was faultless. Room was functional, nice touch with the sweet jar, kettle/tea and coffee was provided. Final big plus was the shower, it was compact but powerful and responsive to temperature change and again if I base this on my travel experiences I’ve stayed in plenty of hotels that are quite pricey and have terrible showers or water pressure, it makes a difference! I think all 3 of us said that we’d return to Durham, probably at some point individually with our wives as we had a good time, and all 3 of us said 100% we’d stay here again.

Second-time staying here when I come to visit friends in Durham. This time I had a single room - small but nice and clean. Heating is on a timer and does not come on in the morning so I was very cold getting up and dressed unfortunately. I didn't experience much noise as the bar/city was quiet however... the drip, drip, drip of the tap in the bathroom drove me mad as a hatter. I tried wrapping a towel, plugging the plughole, using my own ear plugs (a pair is provided)... the dripping just drove me mad, I couldn't stop it and the more I faffed with the tap/plughole the worse it seemed to get. BUT tap-hysteria aside, the bed was warm and comfy and you do get a cute bowl of sweets and biscuits with the tea and coffee :-) Also, the staff are always the friendliest folk who always ask how your day has been. It's always such a warm welcome. No doubt, I will be back soon!

I was booked in for 3 nights, the location of the hotel was the best thing. ! The free ear plugs on arrival gave a clue as to what I might expect. I know you will hear noise from a downstairs bar, but the addition of banging doors and bathroom ventilation fans was too much for me. The ear plugs maybe need an upgrade.

An overnight stay here. Keypad entry room keys from the bar staff which was fine. The room on the 2nd floor was spacious and clean. However the dividing wall with the adjacent room must be wafer thin. We could hear their tv almost every word. Soundproofing is badly needed. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Great location HOWEVER, floor was extremely creaky as was the room above, single glazed sash windows let a LOT of main road and people noise in. A secondary glazing panel could be added. Earplugs were provided. Heating was on a timer so it was cold until it came on. Despite the great location I wouldn’t stay again due to the above points letting it down.

Bar full of students that don’t buy a drink. We went to enjoy the band which was great! It was full of students, which is fine apart from they used it as a social get together and didn’t buy drinks. It left paying patrons standing. It’s a social venue where you buy a drink whether it be alcoholic or non. Not a place to sit for an 2 hours in big groups where 1 person on the table has purchased a drink!

Really well kept lovely room. All provided for a great overnight stay. Warm and cosy too on a cold windy night. Over a busy bustling pub which we really heard nothing just saw on check in. Nice friendly lady took us promptly to the room despite being busy at the bar. Central to many restaurants and the cathedral as we had come for the illumination festival there. I would definitely recommend wholeheartedly this reasonably priced and well looked after place. And their efficient and smiling staff. Hope to visit again and definitely would mention to friends to stay.

I like The City, I’ve visited fairly regularly for a few years now and I like the atmosphere and it’s done out nicely and the Prosecco is a good price. It has one big problem though - it keeps closing early. The last few times we’ve tried to go and it’s been closed or we’ve been told it’s last orders at 2200 because ‘there’s no one in’, even when we are sat there with our drinks. The barmaid tried one time to chuck us out early and our lift wasn’t there so we wouldn’t leave till our lift arrived but she still closed as soon as we left. Last night my friend and I wanted to go to The City and we walked past the window, we saw people inside having a drink. Oh good, we thought. They’re open. We scarcely got in the door (in fact we only got half through the door) and the barmaid said ‘we’re closed! There’s only 5 people in so it’s not worth staying open’ !!! So those 5 customers must have felt properly insulted - they’re not worth staying open for. This was at 2115 on a Thursday night on a bank holiday weekend. I am absolutely incensed at the stupidity of this policy. So the barmaid (who is not the owner btw) is turning away more custom because she can’t be bothered to take the money. If you keep closing early, no wonder you have no customers, people soon get fed up of turning up when you should be open and finding you closed, or enjoying a drink and being told you’re not worth keeping the pub open for. And FYI there were plenty of potential customers about - they were all next door in The Half Moon, they were full! They must love the barmaid at The City. I wonder does the boss know that this is now standard practice at The City? He’s probably wondering why his takings have dropped. Have a look in The Half Moon, they’re in there.

Great friendly staff, clean welcoming atmosphere and reasonable prices. Nothing seemed too much trouble for the team and they actively tried to help you get the best deals. Collector cards for drinks was a very welcome bonus. Definitely worth a visit.
