The City Hotel

After spending one night room only at the City Rooms I felt compelled to write this review. This establishment is a pub with bedrooms above on the first floor. Our party of six had two rooms reserved both of which have been recently renovated to a high standard. The penthouse suite sleeps four people and in addition has a fully equipped kitchen area comprising of sink, fridge, microwave, oven crockery, plus tea/coffee facilities. A single bed and a single sofa-bed are situated just off the kitchen area with the second room which is a double bed situated on the same floor. There is a shared bathroom, full bath with overhead shower and complimentary toiletries which was a really nice touch! Room 9 a double bedded room is down one flight of stairs and this room has also undergone a recent renovation, it also has an awesome bathroom with complimentary toiletries. This pub/hotel is centrally located so it may be a little noisy for those travellers looking for somewhere quiet to stay. After researching hotels in the same area the City Rooms became our first choice based on value for money. On behalf of my party I would like to say a big thank you to Gillian who made us feel very welcome and who couldn’t do enough for us. We will most certainly be returning.

1 night stay in the penthouse for lumiere weekend with friends. Fantastic accommodation close to everything. Gillian was wonderful and really helpful, Balloons and a birthday card were supplied in the room as it was my sisters birthday, really lovely and appreciated. Gillian went out of her way to make us feel welcome and explained everything to us on arrival, even got us into our room early. We stayed Friday night and weren't really bothered by too much noise, although ear plugs are provided as rooms are above the bar. The bar is great, good selection of drinks and they have a stamp card scheme, for residents it's buy 3 get 1 free. Live music on Friday night's, although unfortunately the singer wasn't able to attend due to parking issues with the lumiere event on. No breakfast option but lots of options close by, we went to chapters for breakfast which is a few minutes walk across the bridge(delicious) the room was more like a small apartment with a small kitchen with cooker/hob and fridge. Large double bedroom, single bed and sofa bed in living room. Bathroom with shower over bath, it was massive considering we were only expecting a room. Everything was spotless, no dishcloth though so couldn't wash our chips. Fantastic value for money and wouldn't hesitate to book again! Thank you to all at the city rooms!

Thanks for such a brilliant stay. You guys are the best in Durham. Anybody visiting Durham you need to go to The City Bar. You really are the best in town. For people like me working away from home it's decent to find such a warm welcome.

Stayed at this hotel for a two-night break in Durham with my partner. Staff were really welcoming & friendly. We had a double room with a ensuite which was clean & comfortable. Little extras like chocolates & sweets, tea, coffee and biscuits were appreciated. Enjoyed a few drinks in the bar downstairs too. Great location to explore Durham, only a short walk to the centre and train station. Would definitely stay here again if returning to Durham.

Smartly decorated and clean rooms. Easy walking distance to durham historic centre. Bar noise until closing time, but these are rooms above a pub, so it's expected. Parking on public pay and display on nearby streets.expect o pay about £5 per day. Plenty of nearby eateries, but no food available at three hotel.

Small, comfortable very clean room. Everything you need provided. Tea, Coffee, telly etc You are sleeping above a pub so don't expect peace and quiet during opening hours. If you can cope with that and you're looking for a clean, comfortable, good value place to get your head down then this place is for you. No breakfast in hotel but excellent breakfast rolls from bakery a couple of doors away.

Needed a city centre overnight stay. Room looked newly refurbished. Both bedroom and bathroom were spotless. Much nicer than we expected. Staff in the pub downstairs were great too No breakfast but plenty of nearby options to choose from No lift

I booked a room for three persons whilst attending the rugby in Newcastle. Durham is ideally located just 12 mins by train to Newcastle. When we arrived at 9am which I stated would be the case the pub was closed and there was no ability to contact anyone. I wasn't expecting to check in but had been told I could store our bags whilst we went straight off to Newcastle. Not too problematic we left our bags in the car in the multi story car park adjacent to Elvet Bridge just a couple of 100 meters away. There was no on street parking so this multi story was the closest option. Leaving the car overnight cost £11 . When we returned at about 8:30pm we checked in promptly at the bar quickly and efficiently. We were taken to our rooms,ours was directly above the bar on the first floor at the front , room 2. I was surprised to find two good sized single beds and a double . I was half expecting a sofa bed as the third . The entire room was immaculate, warm and decorated nicely. Large screen TV with Freeview channels. There was a nice selection of tea and coffee and generous too. Some of these places are tight as cramp and only leave you enough tea bags for one drink but there was more than enough. Nice touch with the biscoff biscuits which I love with a brew as well. There was even a selection of complementary kids sweets and chocolate . The bathroom was spotless and well decorated. The bar downstairs closed at 11 so there was no noise to speak of but had there been they had even thought to provide ear buds which I used. After a good night's kip on the comfy beds check out was a case of just leaving your key in the secure box at the exit and leaving. All in all for the £87 I think it was value for money. There is no option of breakfast which I the only downside. If we had wanted it we would have had nowhere to go as the city cafes were not open so early on a Sunday. Never the less this wasn't an issue as we had planned to use the roadside cafe at Scotch Corner off the A1 south anyway. I would recommend this place for a weekend getaway on a budget without hesitation
