Hotels near Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh

Hotel is close enough to Edinburgh's main attractions, you could even get there walking 20-30 minutes from the hotel. Hotel has old facilities and the room has a smell. Also, the toilet wasn't working properly and I had to flush several times to make it work.

Stayed her for three nights October 2022 with the Scotland Rugby League team prior to the Rugby League World Cup. What a great find this hotel was. Spotlessly clean and so very comfortable. Bedrooms roomy and the beds as comfortable as you can get. The food was excellent, and they catered for our every need. The breakfasts were amazing and the service was beyond reproach . Special shout out to our servers Chez, Shannon and the boss Karen. Could not have been better. A massive thank you and a great start to our World Rugby League Cup campaign . Defo use this hotel again.

Stayed here for two nights over the bank holiday weekend in August 2022. I'm guessing the price was high because of the fringe and it being a bank holiday weekend. The hotel was bright and breezy. no tea making facilities in the room. No hair dryer, limited storage, no draws. There was tea making facilities in the reception that were free and always available. Breakfast at the hotel was continental and £7.50 each. Quite reasonable for the offering of cereal, pastries, yoghurts, juice, ham and cheeses. Nice location opposite the tram station.

I had chosen this hotel as it was priced somewhat competitively and with its close proximity to the centre, we decided to take a cosy room with a window. Cosy room with a window is an understatement. Thankfully, as expected, we didn't spend too long in the room as we were out exploring what Edinburgh had to offer but the room was super cramped and made for an uncomfortable stay. The bed is pushed against the wall with a window. You cannot open said window if you're using the bed as it comes out onto one half of the bed. Me and my partner found the mattress to be rather uncomfortable, I had a particular gripe with the pillows as even with two, my head sunk to the mattress and provided zero support. 3 pretty poor night's sleeps, was very much looking forward to getting into my own! There is nowhere else to sit in the room other than the bed. There is no tea or coffee facilities. You can put luggage under the bed however there is nowhere to store the contents, so you're constantly in and out of your bags which take up valuable room space anyway. If you weren't close to your partner, you really will be after staying here. The bathroom is nice, shower is really good however any bathroom habits is echoed into the living area with very little privacy, it got funny by the 2nd day and we just embraced it. We driven to Edinburgh so we parked our car about 15 mins away from the hotel, no problem, £30 for 3 days. The hotel is about a 15-20min casual walk to the main attractions which wasn't totally ideal but not a problem really, I just know we could have got closer for cheaper. We didn't try breakfast so can't pass judgement on that as there were plenty of cafes on the lead up to the centre and the centre itself. The hotel itself is really well decorated and modern. I had zero complaints regarding the cleanliness, it was really good! Staff were super attentive and helpful too, we asked for two extra pillows and were provided there and then, no issues. Check in/check out was really quick and straight forward. Wouldn't return due to uncomfortable bed, super cramped room and poor value for money. Still had a great time in Edinburgh though!

I would have preferred to write my hopefully constructive comments to a member of the senior management at the Dakota Hotels organisation, particularly as they are in the growth stages. However, and significantly, having failed in all my attempts to research an appropriate member of the senior management team, which included writing ‘twice’ to the Dakota Hotel Edinburgh reception (no response), spending a lot of time researching Linkedin and perusing the government website ‘companies house’, not one member of the senior management team appeared. Consequently, I have penned my comments to trip advisor. Location The Dakota Hotel Edinburgh is ideally located to the airport and a super wedding venue, Dunbas Castle. Initially, one is either impressed by the modern looking black edifice or find it depressing, a personal choice. Apparently, the theme of the hotel is one of a sombre mood, where an abundance of light is shunned. On the first evening we held a small champagne reception in a room shared by another wedding party. A gentleman from the other party asked a member of staff who came to close the blinds and put us all in near darkness if it was possible to leave them open. The staff member said it was against hotel policy but would ask the duty manager. Within a few minutes the duty manager appeared and brusquely closed the shutters in a most defiant manner, clearly illustrating the mood of the management! Reception Staff The first impression of a hotel is often made when checking in. Alas, of all the reception staff I encountered during our 4 day stay, I was appalled by the lack of friendly interaction. Indeed, on many occasions the extremely abrupt and curt conversations were almost offensive. Fortunately, there was one female manager named Megan who is most definitely an excellent example for the hospitality industry, as she was polite, attentive, and most efficient. Megan was indeed a redeeming feature of this hotel. At the initial check-in we were informed that we would be entitled to a glass of champagne and two Hors d'oeuvres each evening. This only occurred on two of our 4 evenings! When my daughter arrived from America, she was not told that breakfast was included in her room nor that she was entitled to a complementary glass of champagne and two Hors d'oeuvres each evening of her stay. As my daughter’s stay combined business with pleasure, she had some very important business and video calls to make but was frequently prevented from accomplishing her work as the hotel WiFi was not robust enough. In response to her complaints, she was offered 2 further alternative access points, but neither was sufficient to achieve a strong enough connection. Dining Room The dining room (brasserie Grill) was appropriately illuminated and the staff in the main were efficient and very polite. I booked a a night within the hotel on Halloween as we had booked a walking ghost tour within the city. It was a bit of a walk down to the Royal mile taking about 25 mins but as it was dry it was ok. The hotel was fantastic, the reception staff were lovely and very helpful. The entrance lobby was warm and clean, very inviting. All of the corridors were very well maintained, clean and beautifully decorated. Our room was very spacious with a queen sized bed, seating area and a good sized bathroom. The room again was nicely decorated and well equipped. Due to the restrictions the hotel restaurant was closed but we were allowed to order food into the hotel and the receptionist even pointed us in the direction of local shops. I would recommend the hotel and will most probably stay again.

We were staying as we attended a wedding that was held there so we also benefitted from a reduced rate room which is always a bonus. We had a room which overlooked the front of the property on to the main road (I put that information in for the staff to be able to see to the shower - see below). In terms of price as well for drinks at the bar it is very very good which surprised us given that it is a hotel we expected it to be more expensive. The hotel as I said were doing the wedding too and they did a lovely job in my opinion, the room was made up lovely and the turnarounds from ceremony, to meal to evening reception were done well too, the staff were very professional and the food was okay to. The hotel is clean and the beds are very comfortable. it has obviously been refurbished recently as the rooms are modern. In the morning there is a good breakfast on offer and you can have the standard fry up with options or opt for a cereal and fruit and juice option (or both if it takes your fancy). The only down side was the shower, it was very poor in terms of water pressure which is a shame as the bathroom is very modern and looks very good.

Visiting Edinburgh Castle of Light, I decided to stay overnight. Room (15) had everything needed; a comfortable bed, hot shower, a hospitality tray and clean towels. I will definitely stay here again.

Good location if based in Leith, buses from downtown and the airport express 200 stop directly outside and close to the Leith canal walkway which is nice. Currently lots of construction of the tram outside which makes the location look uglier and harder to navigate than normal. Rooms are good clean and acceptable size. Breakfast is ok. Some of the staff are quite surly, very grumpy when I checked in and refused to help me extend my booking, forcing me to have to book another place.

The hotel is very new, the decoration is rich in design, and the hygiene is good. The room is large, but the bathroom leaks. There are no latex pillows or thermometers. The location is at the junction of the old and new cities. There is a shopping mall downstairs, and it is very convenient to go to attractions.
