InterContinental Hotels - Edinburgh the George, an IHG Hotel

New Town Edinburgh|0.36km from Princes Street Gardens
This was our second time at this hotel and we stayed for almost a week. You can't beat the location on George Street, right downtown, close to shops and restaurants. The hotel is beautiful and the rooms and bathrooms are very nice. The king bed had a good mattress and pillows. There is a safe. They seem to have made upgrades since our last pre-covid stay, including air-conditioning in (all?) rooms. As you would expect in a big city, the rooms are quite small and the hotel is not exactly quiet; also depending on where your room faces. We were right by the elevator, which I generally don't like. I wonder if it's because we booked through our credit card and not direct. It seems there is sometimes a ”penalty'. The rooms are supplied daily with water, delicious cookies and snacks. You can make individual cups of drip coffee in a filter, which is much better than instant coffee but not as good as a Nespresso, IMHO. We had breakfast included and the Printing Press is just wonderful, for breakfast, any meal and later evening cocktails and whiskey. The Burr & Co is a coffee shop, also right next door, with tables outside. Love that place. The hotel has great service. We lost a suitcase and got daily support in checking on the status and changing the address on the delivery. There seemed to be a shortage on hair conditioner and we didn't have a sign for do-not-disturb the first day and got woken at 8 AM, but that didn't spoil our enjoyment of the hotel stay. We expect to be back.

The hotel is fab the staff are great and cannot do more for you , lovely touches provided by guest relations concierge & reception staff are so lovely , catering & bar staff great , the room was lovely , great shower and local produce in rooms such as the coffee etc , social hour is a nice touch and breakfast was great , i would stay here again we had a lovely stay ... however the spa lets it down This was a special birthday suprise for my other half i booked the spa for treatments for us . We were late on arrival due to rail strikes and i missed my spa appointment which is fine i expect that if you are not on time. My partner was still able to recieve his treatment however we were provided with no towels robes or slippers , no info regarding lockers . The massuise gave my partner a robe and was suprised one was not already provided for him after he had to walk around after getting changed into swimwear .The water machine in the ladies changing room did not work the only water available was from a tap in the toilet not ideal as the next water machine was in the lobby opposite the gym , especially not ideal if u have no robe or slippers or towel to go out to it . So if you are are a lady there is no drinking water available , very undignified !! I was not shown to the relaxation room and couldnt go in even if i wanted to as i had no towel or robe . My partner told me the mens changing room stank of urine from a pipe . The staff were not very helpfull or attentive and the service at the spa does not reflect the service or same level of standard as the rest of the hotel . I have had better service at a local lesuire centre and would not use this ”spa” again . My partner and I often use spas and this was by far the worst spa expeirience dissapointing as it was his birthday. I could maybe understand if it was busy but it wasnt .

Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian

West End Edinburgh|0.56km from Princes Street Gardens
Our assessment of our 3 night stay at the Waldorf was mixed. The hotel was very nice and as a Diamond member we were upgraded to a castle view room. The complimentary breakfast was very good and the front desk staff were generally helpful. We did have a problem one night with the light fixture leaking water from the ceiling. This may have been due to a rainstorm one night and staff brought a bucket to catch the leaking water. The biggest problem, however, occurred after checkout. At the time of checkout I was told that the hotel printer wasn’t working so they would email me my receipt. Since all 3 nights were paid for with HH points I asked if there was a zero balance and was told yes. Later that day I received the final bill and was charged over $1,000 on my credit card for all three nights. I immediately called the hotel and was told by in house reservations staff that my reservation had been cancelled when I didn’t show up. I reminded them that we had been staying with them the last 3 nights and had no problem at checkin on the scheduled day. In fact I confirmed our arrival time several hours before checkin. So they didn’t know what the problem was but would talk to the reservations manager when they were free. In the meantime I called the Hilton diamond desk and again was told that someone had cancelled my stay with points and it had been rebooked by someone as a cash stay and they were not sure what the problem was. My points had even been put back onto my account by someone. By now I am a bit irritated. I finally receive a call back from the hotel reservation manager who tells me that the Waldorf had a computer glitch on our arrival date and that all hotel reservations had been cancelled and had to be manually reentered by hotel staff. However, Hilton hotels have no way to make reservations using points so they made them as a cash payment. Thereby the $1,000 bill. Now glitches are bound to occur sometimes. However, all of this angst could have been avoided by telling me at checkin about the problem and I could have immediately rebooked the room using points while standing at the front desk. The hotel did ultimately reverse the charges and apologize. However. this shouldn’t happen at a property like the Waldorf.

I booked a junior suite with garden view & patio. I got a dirty, musty and smelly small basement room next to the kitchen with a view on a wall & noisy frying exhaust (from full haggis Scottish breakfast to fish & chips all day). This isn’t a suite or an apartment. It’s overpriced accommodation (over £200/night) and a scam. I expressed my distress a couple of times. Nobody cared. Noise from the street was intense at night. I will never go back and do not recommend this place. I cannot comment on rooms on upper floors, but avoid the room Nb 1 at all costs! There is no reception, this isn’t a hotel in any way shape or form. They care for the little cafe on the ground floor and just make money from the rooms. I’d prepaid so I had to stay. On the plus side the location is very central and the sheets/towels were clean. The rest of the room and especially bathroom was filthy and unmaintained. The photos will speak for themselves. Too bad you can’t smell through the photos or hear the exhaust or street noise.

I booked 6 hotels in the UK this time. This one is the one I am most satisfied with. The location is excellent, just on Princes Street, and it is easy to find. The breakfast provided by the hotel is an authentic English breakfast, which is very rich and tastes good ,recommend.

Braid Apartments by Mansley

Having previously stayed with my family in No 1 The Mansion Apartments in London I had booked a stay for my son in 2020 in London at that outstanding property. This was a nonrefundable booking made directly with them. Due to border closures he was unable to travel and I was told my money was in credit. I contacted them earlier this year as he was travelling to Scotland during a university break. I couldn't have been happier with the service I received. All the money I had paid 3 years ago was sitting in credit. I was able to use these credits to book both stays in the Highland Apartments in Inverness and the Braid Apartments in Edinburgh on the dates he wanted to travel. He said both apartments were excellent. Due to such outstanding customer service I will definitely book one of their properties again when we are next in the United Kingdom and will do so directly with them due to the ease of resolving such an unseen complication.

Self-catering apartment. No breakfast. Lots of eating and drinking nearby. The reserved room has a sofa bed that can be called an extra bed. Others don’t know. Family apartments are of course suitable for children. No one cares how many children you take, as long as you feel able to sleep. Password lock self check-in . The location of the apartment is very good, on the Prince’s Road, facing the castle overlooking the Prince’s Garden. There is no free parking nearby, and there is a taxi waiting area on the side of the road.

The pros - location is perfect for a weekend in Edinburgh, just off Princes Street and Rose Street, ideally located for any number of bars, restaurants and sightseeing. The apartment was very clean and modern with good kitchen facilities (if needed). However there are a lot stairs which would not suit anyone with mobility issues. The cons - check in confirmation sent was for the wrong apartment, so we were unable to gain entry on arrival to then be advised we had been moved. We were not given the apartment I had booked and it was smaller than expected with no view looking into an office block and a grubby rooftop area with a dead pigeon! I had requested an additional bed which I was assured would be in the apartment, but a cheap fold up bed had been left outside the wrong apartment, meaning I had to carry it up 2-3 flights of stairs and make it up myself, before being charged £15 per night for its use! If staying here please note all the small print as an additional deposit charge (£200) will also be taken without warning before you stay and held for 3-5 days after your departure until they check the apartment over.
