Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian

West End Edinburgh|0.2km from Charlotte Chapel
Our assessment of our 3 night stay at the Waldorf was mixed. The hotel was very nice and as a Diamond member we were upgraded to a castle view room. The complimentary breakfast was very good and the front desk staff were generally helpful. We did have a problem one night with the light fixture leaking water from the ceiling. This may have been due to a rainstorm one night and staff brought a bucket to catch the leaking water. The biggest problem, however, occurred after checkout. At the time of checkout I was told that the hotel printer wasn’t working so they would email me my receipt. Since all 3 nights were paid for with HH points I asked if there was a zero balance and was told yes. Later that day I received the final bill and was charged over $1,000 on my credit card for all three nights. I immediately called the hotel and was told by in house reservations staff that my reservation had been cancelled when I didn’t show up. I reminded them that we had been staying with them the last 3 nights and had no problem at checkin on the scheduled day. In fact I confirmed our arrival time several hours before checkin. So they didn’t know what the problem was but would talk to the reservations manager when they were free. In the meantime I called the Hilton diamond desk and again was told that someone had cancelled my stay with points and it had been rebooked by someone as a cash stay and they were not sure what the problem was. My points had even been put back onto my account by someone. By now I am a bit irritated. I finally receive a call back from the hotel reservation manager who tells me that the Waldorf had a computer glitch on our arrival date and that all hotel reservations had been cancelled and had to be manually reentered by hotel staff. However, Hilton hotels have no way to make reservations using points so they made them as a cash payment. Thereby the $1,000 bill. Now glitches are bound to occur sometimes. However, all of this angst could have been avoided by telling me at checkin about the problem and I could have immediately rebooked the room using points while standing at the front desk. The hotel did ultimately reverse the charges and apologize. However. this shouldn’t happen at a property like the Waldorf.

The hotel is fab the staff are great and cannot do more for you , lovely touches provided by guest relations concierge & reception staff are so lovely , catering & bar staff great , the room was lovely , great shower and local produce in rooms such as the coffee etc , social hour is a nice touch and breakfast was great , i would stay here again we had a lovely stay ... however the spa lets it down This was a special birthday suprise for my other half i booked the spa for treatments for us . We were late on arrival due to rail strikes and i missed my spa appointment which is fine i expect that if you are not on time. My partner was still able to recieve his treatment however we were provided with no towels robes or slippers , no info regarding lockers . The massuise gave my partner a robe and was suprised one was not already provided for him after he had to walk around after getting changed into swimwear .The water machine in the ladies changing room did not work the only water available was from a tap in the toilet not ideal as the next water machine was in the lobby opposite the gym , especially not ideal if u have no robe or slippers or towel to go out to it . So if you are are a lady there is no drinking water available , very undignified !! I was not shown to the relaxation room and couldnt go in even if i wanted to as i had no towel or robe . My partner told me the mens changing room stank of urine from a pipe . The staff were not very helpfull or attentive and the service at the spa does not reflect the service or same level of standard as the rest of the hotel . I have had better service at a local lesuire centre and would not use this ”spa” again . My partner and I often use spas and this was by far the worst spa expeirience dissapointing as it was his birthday. I could maybe understand if it was busy but it wasnt .

InterContinental Hotels - Edinburgh the George, an IHG Hotel

New Town Edinburgh|1.01km from Charlotte Chapel
This was our second time at this hotel and we stayed for almost a week. You can't beat the location on George Street, right downtown, close to shops and restaurants. The hotel is beautiful and the rooms and bathrooms are very nice. The king bed had a good mattress and pillows. There is a safe. They seem to have made upgrades since our last pre-covid stay, including air-conditioning in (all?) rooms. As you would expect in a big city, the rooms are quite small and the hotel is not exactly quiet; also depending on where your room faces. We were right by the elevator, which I generally don't like. I wonder if it's because we booked through our credit card and not direct. It seems there is sometimes a ”penalty'. The rooms are supplied daily with water, delicious cookies and snacks. You can make individual cups of drip coffee in a filter, which is much better than instant coffee but not as good as a Nespresso, IMHO. We had breakfast included and the Printing Press is just wonderful, for breakfast, any meal and later evening cocktails and whiskey. The Burr & Co is a coffee shop, also right next door, with tables outside. Love that place. The hotel has great service. We lost a suitcase and got daily support in checking on the status and changing the address on the delivery. There seemed to be a shortage on hair conditioner and we didn't have a sign for do-not-disturb the first day and got woken at 8 AM, but that didn't spoil our enjoyment of the hotel stay. We expect to be back.

The Rutland Hotel & Apartments

West End Edinburgh|0.17km from Charlotte Chapel
I spent 18 nights in Apartment 2 during the last half of August 2023 and could not have been happier. I was booked up so solidly during that time -- mostly for the book fair but with some Fringe events as well -- that I sat down in a restaurant only once during my stay. I knew in advance that having a kitchen would be helpful but couldn't have guessed just how helpful. The location of the hotel is incomparable -- I walked everywhere with ease, and the street was quiet no matter how busy Grassmarket or Southbridge were. Just a short walk home to peace. There are Sainsburys every few blocks so you can pick up food easily, and don't miss Nando's for takeaway or dine in. The Edinburgh farmers market is just a couple of blocks from the hotel -- another reason to stay in one of the apartments if you'll be staying more than a few days. The bed was comfortable and the pillows and linens were high quality. Housekeeping was completely unobtrusive and thorough. All staff seemed to be as delighted to be there as I was. The bathroom was huge -- mine did not have a tub, but the walk in shower was luxurious and the toiletries smelled like heaven. The bath towels are thick and absorbent, and more like the size of bath sheets. Everything was super clean. If you will be staying here and are considering a massage during your stay, I strongly recommend the Lush Spa, just a few blocks away and a real value for the money.

Point A Hotel Edinburgh Haymarket

West End Edinburgh|0.36km from Charlotte Chapel
I had chosen this hotel as it was priced somewhat competitively and with its close proximity to the centre, we decided to take a cosy room with a window. Cosy room with a window is an understatement. Thankfully, as expected, we didn't spend too long in the room as we were out exploring what Edinburgh had to offer but the room was super cramped and made for an uncomfortable stay. The bed is pushed against the wall with a window. You cannot open said window if you're using the bed as it comes out onto one half of the bed. Me and my partner found the mattress to be rather uncomfortable, I had a particular gripe with the pillows as even with two, my head sunk to the mattress and provided zero support. 3 pretty poor night's sleeps, was very much looking forward to getting into my own! There is nowhere else to sit in the room other than the bed. There is no tea or coffee facilities. You can put luggage under the bed however there is nowhere to store the contents, so you're constantly in and out of your bags which take up valuable room space anyway. If you weren't close to your partner, you really will be after staying here. The bathroom is nice, shower is really good however any bathroom habits is echoed into the living area with very little privacy, it got funny by the 2nd day and we just embraced it. We driven to Edinburgh so we parked our car about 15 mins away from the hotel, no problem, £30 for 3 days. The hotel is about a 15-20min casual walk to the main attractions which wasn't totally ideal but not a problem really, I just know we could have got closer for cheaper. We didn't try breakfast so can't pass judgement on that as there were plenty of cafes on the lead up to the centre and the centre itself. The hotel itself is really well decorated and modern. I had zero complaints regarding the cleanliness, it was really good! Staff were super attentive and helpful too, we asked for two extra pillows and were provided there and then, no issues. Check in/check out was really quick and straight forward. Wouldn't return due to uncomfortable bed, super cramped room and poor value for money. Still had a great time in Edinburgh though!

Haymarket Apartments

West End Edinburgh|0.38km from Charlotte Chapel
The apartment is basically one room which is converted to a bedsit. So you have sleeping, living, dining and kitchen space all in one space. It's clearly shown like this on the photos so we knew this when we booked. The kitchen is very compact and is sufficient for very basic cooking such as having toast or a soup. To use the microwave it is stored in a cupboard so you have to clear space on the small worktop before you can use it and then put it away afterwards so you can have a small space to prepare cups of tea etc. It isn't very convenient. The sitting area is compact with 2 very small settees so you can't sit together in comfort on one settee. The TV is located high on a wall above the fireplace and to view the TV you will have to reposition the settees. You will still get a cricked neck though. The bed and bathroom are very nice, comfortable and well equipt. We found the main problem with the flat is traffic noise. It's located on a busy main street with lots of traffic entering and leaving the city and sirens from police cars and ambulances, particularly at night. Hence poor sleep quality. The original sash windows are still in place and are only single glazed. Presumably because the building is located in a conservation area so this didn't help either. The location of the flat is good and you can walk into the city or get a bus or tram very easily. We always have a good time no matter where we go and we would recommend Edinburgh to anyone but we wouldn't stay in the same flat again.....sorry.

We stayed here for 2 nights and arrived home today. Firstly all the staff were absolutely lovely!! We was so happy and to say they’re dog friendly really made our stay much better. The bedroom was spacious, the bed was huge, comfy & the shower was great! The cleanliness was 1000/1000 and we would definitely be back!! We didn’t have breakfast but the prices are cheap & I really recommend staying here. My dog loved it, I did tell the staff not to tidy my room and when we come back they had (which I felt bad about because it was a mess & our dog had stuffing everywhere from his teddy) but Thankyou for cleaning it anyways. Fresh clean plenty of towels, the only thing I would say is please add proper toiletries e g shampoo and conditioner as my hair did not like the shampoo. All in all it’s in the city centre, the windows open and you get a huge fan in your room!! The tv works, the WiFi works & it’s next door to tesco express, sainsburys & pubs!

I booked this hotel to go to the tattoo I knew it was a no frills budget hotel but was not expecting how small the rooms were probably ok if travelling alone or maybe a one night stay, we stayed 3 night and were glad to leave the hotel, we were told that all rooms in this hotel are approximately 8x8 square basically a box room with a bed and a toilet and shower cubicle and nothing else no chairs no where to put things there is a tv in the room. But we did not use this the up side though is the location which is fantastic and close to everything, the staff know the problems and were exceptional in helping and understanding our needs, I can not fault their efforts and the rooms even thought a little ruff around the edges were very clean We did have a few issues with maintenance of our room the bathroom (if you can call it that) handle kept falling off and there was a piece of tape holding the skirting on Even as a budget hotel there should be certain standards followed

Three friends visiting for the festival - our basement apartment was perfectly and centrally located near haymarket, but not too noisy. Huge and really well equipped and with 2 bedrooms, each with a sofa bed and also 2 bathrooms. All that you need, including iron, 2 hair dryers, a few toiletries and tea coffee milk etc to get you started or tide you over for a couple of nights. Plus lovely big kitchen dining living area. Highly recommend and was great value for the standard of finish and the fact it was the busiest weekend of the year! Would recommend and will return.

The hotel location is very good, very close to Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street, it is a little far away from Royal Mile Street, but can be reached on foot, the town is very suitable for walking. The hotel implements unmanned management, and you can open the door and the room door yourself according to the password you check in. We are a family of 5 staying with children and living suites. The rooms are large and clean and well-equipped. You can cook your own meals. Tableware and pots are fully equipped (but I do n’t see a microwave). We are accustomed to the British diet. The house even provides equipment such as vacuum cleaners and washing machines, which is in line with our home habits. The price is slightly higher, but for the case of five of us, it is still a lot more cost-effective than booking two single rooms, especially it is really good to be able to cook by ourselves. In particular, we need to remind everyone that the hotel will send you an email 7 days and 1 day before the check-in, which will contain the room number and password for the check-in. If you booked on Ctrip, because they may have booked through other channels, the reserved mailbox is not ours, we cannot receive the mail, we must contact Ctrip customer service one day in advance, get this information, and then Can stay. Because the apartment is unmanned, it will be inconvenient to communicate if there is a temporary problem.

Surprisingly good apartment. Stayed here for a long weekend with my daughter mid-January 2022. It’s about a 15 minute easy walk from the train station and very easy to find. Apartment itself is in a great location (think it was apartment 2), facing Princes Street. It is directly above a closed shop, with a McDonald’s to the left. So noise may be a problem - we live in Central London so didn’t really notice it at all. Bedrooms are at the back of the property so the noise isn’t an issue overnight. As somebody else pointed out, the main door area is a bit dirty as it’s on the Main Street. When we found the place on Street View that did put us off a bit, but don’t let it worry you - it’s minor. Property itself was modern and well maintained - dishwasher (no tablets /detergent though that we could find), washing machine, coffee machine etc. Decent state of repair too although with some bits that could do with tidying up. Bathrooms had underfloor heating too which was good - and also pretty good water pressure in both showers! Important if you like that! All in all we had a great stay, and would happily stay again.
Destiny Scotland -The Malt House Apartments
4.5/543 Reviews
West End
Our apartment, No 7 in the Malt House, left us somewhat disappointed. The photos illustrating the apartment made it look bright, which was not the case. What you do not see is the heavy net curtain on the french doors to stop neighbouring apartments looking in nor the need to keep the blinds down on the other windows as they are directly facing the windows just across a very narrow street. This makes the apartment very dark unless you want to be looked at by the people in the kitchen opposite. To compensate you need all the lights on and these are significantly underpowered. We booked the apartment having found it on ***********, which clearly shows that the bed is an extra large king sized bed, (normally 180 or even 200cm x 200cm), in fact the bed is a UK king size bed (160cm x 200cm). This is an important consideration for us when making a booking. Most importantly, and despite all the commentary in the apartment manual, the apartment was not very clean. We found the bedside tables to be covered in dust, stains on the floor, indicating that it hadn't been recently mopped and mould on the grouting in the shower. Both the sink and shower had slow drainage, hairs in the shower plug hole being a contributing factor. There were also issues with the safety of two of the plug sockets. We did report much of the above to the customer services at the end of our stay so that they could rectify it for the next clients, we appreciate that had we told them at the beginning of our stay they could have rectified some of the issues but we did not want the inconvenience of being disturbed during our short stay. There were positives, the apartment is well equipped, the shower is powerful (unlike in many of the places we stayed in on our tour of Scotland), Wi-fi worked well. The apartment is really well placed in the west end, minutes from the centre and transport hubs. Plenty of local restaurants.
