Kempinski Palace Engelberg

Engelberg|0.37km from city center
We stayed at the Kempinski Palace for two nights and were not completely happy with our stay. We were charged a surcharge for early check-in. When booking the room, we requested early check-in if possible as we were arriving from an overnight USA flight and knew we would be tired upon arrival. A member of the concierge team contacted us and inquired when we would like to check in, we replied 11:00. We were then informed that the hotel normally charges for early check-in, 50 CHF per hour, but if we would like our room ready at 11:00, a surcharge of 130 CHF will apply. We agreed to the surcharge. We understand that hotels are not always able to provide early check-in, but if you suspect that you may be able to, why charge a surcharge? We have received an early check-in many times and have never been charged a surcharge. We also contacted the hotel prior to our arrival about a transfer from Zurich Airport to the hotel as we are unable to travel by train with luggage. The hotel arranged a transfer for 550 CHF. Our trip to the hotel was quite eventful as the car broke down on Engelbergerstrasse, an icy road, a short distance from the hotel. Our driver was upset as he lost complete power and could not restart the car or even open the trunk. He contacted the hotel. The hotel shuttle came and picked us up. When we checked-in, we honestly expected someone to express concern over our recent transfer issue, no one mentioned it, so we took it upon ourselves to explain the situation. Again, no one expressed any concern. Spoke to a Lady in Red, shortly after a brief rest in our room and again I brought up the transfer issue. I stated that I thought that management should be made aware of the car breaking down. To my surprise, she replied, ”Why?” She further explained that things like that happen and the hotel is not responsible as they only partner with the car company. It was not their car. During the exchange she was very matter the fact and expressed no empathy. The following day I met Mr. Korth, the Front Office Manager. He was empathic. Later that evening I learned that he contacted the car company and secured a reduction in our rate for the transfer. He also sent tea and strawberries to our room that evening. We were very pleased with his response. We also spoke to the same Lady in Red about going to Titlis. She told us that it was a short walk there from the hotel along a lovely river. We were familiar with the roads/ sidewalks to Titlis as our car broke down on one of them. There are very icy. We inquired about the hotel shuttle and she agreed that the shuttle could take us. She did not suggest that it could pick us up. We walked home and it was not a pleasant walk. We nearly fell several times. My spouse is his 70's and I am in my 60”s. Really think that she should have been more sensitive to our age and offered the shuttle service to and from Titlis. Adam, the bartender at the bar, was very friendly and provided excellent service. Titlis Resort

Engelberg|0.81km from city center
I have visited Engelberg (English meaning “Angel Mountain”) for 12 years now and have skied here every year for the past 10 years. The Swiss National Ski Team have their permanent base here for good reasons! Apart from the variety of skiing available, the fact that the skiing is high (the top of Titlis is 10,000 feet) means that snow is assured. The Titlis Resort itself is ideally placed 5 minutes walk from the main lifts and less than 10 minutes walk from the centre of the town. There is also a bus service which takes about 3 minutes from the Resort to the Train station (and also goes to / from the main lifts). The ride is too short to be worth bothering with (even though its free) as it’s such an easy walk, but might be useful for people with a lot of luggage. Titlis Resort itself is made up of a number of entirely self-contained apartments stocked with all the crockery, appliances etc you would need to live there year round. They are of exceptionally high standard (think Swiss quality appliances and finishing, with 5* hotel bathrooms). Personally, I prefer top floor apartments as they have mountain views from the principal rooms and terraces. No 333 is my favourite as it has a big terrace, 4 big bedrooms and fabulous mountain views from all of them. It also has international / multi lingual TV which also gives you access to live webcams across the resort, so you can plan your day outside. (You don’t go to Engelberg to watch TV!). The cleanliness of the apartments has in my experience always been first class. The town centre has a lot of amenities, including 2 supermarkets, a massive sports centre - we tried curling (its super fun for children and even the over 70's), and a good selection of restaurants and bars. However, this is not a ”party” resort like say St Anton. There is lively aprés-ski, starting with the Chalet Bar at the bottom of the main lifts, but the number of bars open after midnight is limited to a handful of places. There are excellent facilities for children / absolute beginners (‘magic carpets’ at low levels, lots of multi-lingual instructors etc), but this resort is heaven for competent skiers. Whilst things like lift passes are a little more expensive in Switzerland than say at French resorts, you get your money's worth by the lack of queuing. The resort has also been investing in themselves heavily in recent years - this year one of the new lifts didn't just have padded seats, they were heated too (when activated by someone sitting on them) ! All powered with green hydro-electric energy. Titlis Resort is also only a few minutes walk into the mountains, which are simply glorious all year round. There seem to be only slightly fewer visitors in the summer than winter, but much more of the mountains are accessible on foot, so its perfectly possible to be alone with your thoughts or a book in this little bit of heaven on Earth (but you will likely hear a fair amount of Swiss cow bells ringing!). Top tips.

Thank you for a wonderful stay at your charming hotel. We arrived with reservations to an engleberg hotel in Germany! Yet the kind staff were able to accommodate us even though the hotel was very full. We enjoyed the use of the children’s playroom where our 2 year old granddaughter had lots of fun on one rainy afternoon. Our room was clean and spacious with a comfy bed and a delicious breakfast. We had to mail the room key back to them when we realized on the train to Murren that we had not returned it when we checked out! We are usually much better guests than that. I guess it was time to head home and stop traveling!

Looking for a relaxing break in the Swiss Alos, close to the slopes, I found this little gem: a hotel, pretty rustique in the traditional Swiss way! Not far from the heart of Engelberg but far enough to contemplate the sky, see the stars and hear only the heartbeat of nature. Clean, very very clean, with comfortable rooms, not big, just comfy, most with a balcony overviewing the village. Staff, super nice and polite, ready to help and advise: had a 10% discount in my ski rental and anytime I wanted to go skiing they got in the minivan and took me to the resort! The restaurant was also nice, with delicious dishes and a savvy wine list. Not to miss! Only point I would like to note, the breakfast buffet: every day the same, not always fresh fruits available. Would like some variety and some chocolate croissants, please! Overall, a must go!

Located right in the epicenter of Engelberg and practically 150m from the train station. Arrival was extremely welcoming by a young lady who not only was professional but also made sure all is in place. We stayed three nights and the room was very confortable and clean. Special credit to the pet friendlyness as we travel with a small dog. The downsides were related to the F&B section : The bartender at the bar was unattentive. Also the service attitude at breakfast left some wide space for improvement even though the breakfast itself was very good with a wide selection of things available. From one positive extreme to another left us with mixed feelings. The Regina Titlis (Now H+ Hotel) used to be the best place in town but unfortunately no longer.

Wow, what a location and hostel!! Our room was absolutely gorgeous with a stunning balcony view of the mountains. The bunk beds were cute and it was pretty spacious. Great location in the town of Engelberg, walkable to town and restaurants as well as the lift up to Mt. Titlis. The fondu on the first night was the perfect welcome to Switzerland. Left wanting to stay another night and hopefully get to come back someday!

We temporarily decided to stay in Engelberg for one night and another weekend, so the entire hotel in Engelberg can be booked and the price is higher. After the check-in, the room was quite big, but the equipment was very simple, probably the same as the domestic 168, there is a small balcony. The hotel has a good breakfast, the hotel has a good location, and a new hotel is built next to it. The car park is right behind the hotel.
