Pousada Convento de Evora – Historic Hotel

Service: Front desk staff was extremely friendly and cheerful. Same goes to the food & beverage guest facing staff. We were treated well throughout the hotel with no gaps in service or attention. Breakfast selection was fresh and having the opportunity to try traditional “convent cakes” is a real treat. The lobby bar is very quiet but it’s a good place to come for an afternoon snack (sandwiches, toast with butter, potato chips/crisps). Facilities: Wanted to use the outdoor pool but the weather was too cold to go swimming. No fault of the hotel. - does not have an elevator, not good for elderly guests. - parking is limited, call in advance to get a spot or drive around the city to find an empty spot like we did. - driving to the hotel is tricky as the location is in the historic city center with very steel and narrow roads. - free WiFi and good connectivity throughout. Hygeine (overall): Although the convent is centuries old we find the common areas very clean and full of sunlight. Only area we find to be dark are the interior corridors towards to swimming pool and another set of hotel rooms. Antique furniture and the display of azuleju and tapestries were very well done and well preserved. Rooms: We stayed on the 2nd floor and had a nice view to the Cathedral. The rooms were clean and very basic. Loved the hotel using local Portuguese brand Castelbel for shampoo/soap and the body lotion. - does not have hot water kettle (some hotels you need to call to have it delivered to the room, we did not do that this time) - acoustics are quite powerful especially the noise from the corridor to the room. - need to confirm a breakfast time slot the evening before. All in all, our stay was pleasant and I had one of the best sleeps. It was so close to major landmarks and will certainly come back to stay.

I booked this hotel mainly because its proximity to the Roman Temple. I chose the room which was a suite because it mentioned a partial view of the Temple. Unfortunately, what we got was a view of a wall. The bedroom opened out onto the breakfast area. The room was shabby with faded carpets. The bath with shower over was not easy to get in and out of for our 70 something bodies. A rubber mat would have helped. The air con broke down on the first night and although it appeared fixed it failed again on our second night. Sleep was fitful on both nights as it was quite warm. If you arrive by car be aware of the narrow streets. My satnav tried to take us down no entry streets. We eventually parked up and walked to the hotel. The saving grace for this hotel is the staff. They were great. 5 Star it is not.

A beautiful and historic building in a lovely setting. The staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. However, for the money they are charging they should have been better. We were 3 couples travelling together and all of us had various issues with our rooms that rather took the shine off things. In 2 rooms the bath plugs didn’t work, so taking a bath was impossible. One of these rooms had no water to a sink tap. This was all reported to reception but never fixed. One room was missing a coffee machine (plus the bath issue). In another room the toilet cistern stopped working. It was several hours and a chase up after reporting the problem that we were told it couldn’t be fixed. To be fair, they did eventually provide us with another room. We raised these issues at checkout (we had prepaid) but were told that any complaints had to be made to the hotel group head office. We all had a lovely stay but this is not a cheap place to stay and as a minimum we expected things like baths and toilets to work!

Beautiful historical building, walking along its corridors can create illusions of what was back when it was a monastery. The rooms themselves are adequate in size whilst the bathrooms are fairly spacious. Service with a smile from friendly staff, breakfast is what you we would expect at most hotels. All in all a wonderful stay at a beautiful hotel complemented with friendly staff.

A truly unique experience for a special occasion or other. Great service teams, front desk, valet, bar, restaurants and room cleanliness. Attentive, responsive, caring. Great history, wall paintings, murals, furniture, hallways, gardens and so much more to explore...very cool bar. Right next to Roman temple ruins, museums, wine tastings, restaurants.

Beautiful venue, wonderful staff. The historical elements are beautifully integrated into an extremely lovely facility in an amazing setting. I highly recommend it but if you are driving be sure to get clear instructions on how to access the parking. Do not trust Google maps!

This is a beautiful hotel in the old town of Evora and central for all the beautiful sights. The beds are very comfortable and there are great views over the town of Evora. The staff are incredibly helpful and kind. I would thoroughly recommend

We were disappointed. Our room had several ants, on the walls, carpet, bathroom floor, shower curtain, on the table at breakfast and several in the bed. I contacted the front desk and received bug spray that expired in 2021. It helped but they were back in the morning. The hotel told us “it’s to be expected when you’re staying in the country”, wrong!! I gave the big spray back in the morning when we checked out, not even an apology, just “we are aware and working on it”. Funny, no mention of being aware at check in. The restaurant had good food and service, the hotel is disappointing!

Difficult to get there. We put the address into Google Maps and the directions took us down a arrow road where we almost got stuck. We had to take on the wing mirrors to get through. Helped by a local. So put into Google Maps the Largo outside the hotel. Parking also v difficult in the hotel's small space. And when leaving the car park go out the way you came in ignoring no entry sign on arch to get back to the Largo. Apart from that hotel was fine.
