One of the oldest hotel along Gurney Drive but still among the best and cheapest in that area. Clean and friendly staff. Fair breakfast buffet spread. Free canned drinks and apples daily. Simply amazing hotel. We chose the seaview deluxe room and the view facing the bay was amazing. The new Gurney bay park is just in front of the hotel where you can jog and catch sunrise at the promenade. Evergreen Laurel is surely my favorite hotel in Georgetown and will come back here soon.

My elderly parents stayed at The Gurney during their medical checkup in Penang and accidentally left behind some documents. We emailed the hotel and left a message through booking.com to no avail. Then through a phone call, we got connected to Danesh at the Concierge Department, who then went the extra mile to coordinate among various departments within the hotel, and mailed the document through express courier service. His attentive service is highly appreciated.

The hotel is good and clean, but the service of parking security is terrible, before we check in, one of the security was playing his phone and videocalling with his friend，so he didnt even notice our car，when he finally noticed us after my husband was leaving to check in first， he knocked our car heavily，and said this is not parking area，i said ok，just a second，he is checking in，the security was rolling his eyes and said it emphasisly again，asked me to move it and i dont even have driving license here. One minutes later ，my husband was back with room card，he checked and let us just parking right there！！ can not believe there are rude staff in this fancy hotel！ 这个酒店的保安无比地*****，我们车停在门口去checkin ，有一个印度保安当时在草丛里玩手机压根没看到我们，然后我老公刚离开座位，车引擎今年还开这，就听见有人猛敲我车窗，我吓一跳看见这个印度保安从草丛里跑出来手机不玩了，说这不是停车位，我说好的 等一分钟，他去checkin ，我们马上开走，他在那翻着白眼大声说这不是停车位！ 我说我没驾照，不然你来开。他一副高高在上的嘴脸，站在我车门口，然后等我老公出来拿着房卡，他一看是酒店的客人，就说把车摆正，等我们下车他赶紧跑远了。酒店平时都没有服务态度的培训吗，他都把自己当这酒店主人了

We had a pleasant three-day stay at this hotel. The hotel is in an excellent location, situated between two large malls with plenty of shops and restaurants and within a reasonable cab ride to both George Town and Batu Ferringhi. The room was quite spacious but a little bit dated and worn down. It could use a refresh. The bed was very comfortable, however, and the water pressure in the shower was excellent. We enjoyed using the beautiful infinity pool. Service was friendly and efficient. One area that could use improvement is the breakfast. Although there is a good variety of items offered, many just weren't very tasty. The best thing on the buffet was the homemade ice cream. Overall, this is a good place to stay when exploring the island of Penang.

The white elevator is very unique to this elevator. Tho it was slow but I don’t mind bec it so chic with glass door. Very unique indeed! Love it though I wasn’t able to take pic. 😒 +++ white elevator, water refilling dispenser, very spacious room & bathroom +++ location was quite away from the main action but there are 2 bus stops nearby, komtar & chowrasta are 5-10mins walk +++ they provide dental kit, small soap, nice shampoo/conditioner & body wash, mugs, electric kettle, safe, ref, ac was functioning very well, room telephone, tv but i did not use it +++ free wifi was good —- reception is not very friendly except for 1 Indian guy who promptly answers whatsapp tho he mistaken me for a guy at first 😄, the chinese receptionist hardly smiles, indian lady seemed to not know anything when you ask about tourist spots (i think hotel people should equip themselves with some knowledge on tourism. I mean there should be basic orientation by management on this. Times had changed and you need to have these extra customer service, just suggesting). —- i was in the assumption that cleaning is daily but i was told every other day but i still need to remind them about it. Entire hotel can use some improvement in the cleaning — no closet inside the room, you just have to hang your stuff —- my view was a huge wall —- soundproofing is bad, very noisy when people close doors or children running around. You hear toilet flushing from nearby rooms —- it was raining when I arrive and nobody offered an umbrella except on the second day when the janitor heard me. That was appreciated very much. It also made me realize that umbrella is a weapon for solo travellers so that made the carrying a little easier —- towels smell mushy maybe bec of rainy season —- sometimes bathroom had some drainage smells —- food choices was a little limited in area unless you walk for like 5-10mins. Overall stay was still on the good side. I had way worst stays than this. I did enjoy my solo trip to Penang and would love to go back. I plan to stay next time near the street art areas where the actions are. I would still recommend le embassy to other travellers.

First time staying at VOUK hotel. It’s definitely not the most luxurious hotel, but for the price point, it’s worth a stay. Pros: Location is perfect, with lots of local delights within the vicinity (2-3km away). Receptionist and all other hotel staffs are mostly friendly, except they are not very fluent in English and communication may be a little difficult. Cons: Amenities are not very complete, and cleanliness can be improved. The cups were not washed and carpeted floor was not vacuumed. P.S. I don’t recommend the oden from the lounge. We waited for 45 minutes even though we were the only customer in the lounge. The noodles were not cooked and the Tom Yum gravy was purely made of oil.

Stayed here one night in family suites with 2 rooms with my 2 kids, the hotel is not far from Komtar penang. Parking is not an issue even for our MPV, their rotating car park with escalator can move the car into empty slot. Check-in is fast and we stayed at level 19th with nice city and some ocean view. Room is very big with a living room, master room with big washroom and changing cabinet, and another connecting room. Wifi is fast and there are 19 tv channels to choose from. Next morning we went for their gym at level 22, not very big but good enough with 5-6 workout machines. Breakfast is at level 21 buffet styles, choice is just nice, not many but food is ok with reasonable price, only RM21 per pax.

I recently stayed at the Berjaya Hotel in Penang and found the experience to be a mix of comfort and inconvenience. The bed was notably comfortable, providing a good night's rest. However, my stay was marred by significant noise issues. It seemed like there was a lot of disturbance coming from the surrounding rooms, particularly when someone next door used water facilities. I suspect the main water compressor might be located near my room (2209), which contributed to the noise levels.The hotel, in general, shows signs of aging. While it maintains a classic charm, it would benefit greatly from refurbishment to enhance the overall guest experience. This update could really elevate the hotel to the standard one expects from a property in such a prime location.

Room was clean and comfy, toiletries were provided except bathrobe. Breakfast spread was huge and variety was great. Just the interior design is slightly dated and there are some funny dark corners in the hotel, but all is good! The staff are polite and service is great. My sister was panicking because she left her iPod at the gym and only remembered one day later. When we returned to the hotel to ask, we managed to claim it from the lost and found at the counter. We thought we lost it for good and was surprised we could get it back! Mr Ajib who was cleaning the gym had picked it up and returned it. We will really like to commend him for his honesty and kindness! We are also thankful to him!! It really goes to show that the staff are very honest people. Would recommend staying here if you want to be close to George Town, the UNESCO heritage area. Around 10 min walk to the Chew jetty and nearby shops and stores.

I booked for two twin beds rooms for our family trip. This hotel is situated near the Komtar, so it is very convenient to get to the public transportation and eateries. You can walk to the famous Penang Road Chendol and bus station within 1 km. The location is great. Breakfasts very good. Perfect pool to cool down (cold water, seriously), good choice. For me, the location and the swimming pool (because of my daughter) is ok. I recommend it. But: Zero wardrobes, cupboards etc. We had to keep everything in suitcases and there was not even a towel rack in the bathroom. It is much more important than an extra toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. Besides, calls from a nearby mosque are awakened. These are the details that irritate. And the pillows - high and hard. In addition, the hotel complies with the description and you can safely spend a few nights in it.

One person is fine, two people would start getting crowded. Two people with lots of luggage and you'd be in trouble. The beds are also very hard, and on metal frames that squeak a bit. Only two pillows as well (fine for a solo traveller). The bathroom is also very small, but functional. The shower curtain doesn't do much, but the water was hot and pressure was good. Fresh drinking water provided, but no fridge. Location was good, close to Lebuh Armenian. There are some cafes nearby, but they don't tend to open until 9am or so. If you want to eat before then, you're out of luck. The price, however, was right. A very reasonable price all things considered!

On the plus side: - Great location in little India, right across the street from Kapitan restaurant which is open 24h and has great food for a decent price. Just a short walk away along Chulia street is Chinatown with street food stalls and the nightlife of Love Lane. - WiFi was very good On the minus side: - The room provides no sound isolation whatsoever from the heavily trafficked Chulia street, and to make matters worse, the nearby mosque likes to crank up the volume on the speakers during their calls to prayer. Make sure to bring ear plugs if you are planning to sleep. - The hostel did not provide toilet paper for the room, which was a first during all my travels. - The room rate was marketed as including breakfast, which it technically did, but it was a joke: it consisted of a glass of coffee and two slices of toast joined together by a razor thin layer of jam. Considering that the hostel is managed by an actual restaurant (where breakfast is also served) it's pretty obvious that this puny breakfast is only a way to game the system om booking sites. They could easily provide a decent breakfast instead. - The room was marketed as having a desk, but it did not have one, and the electric outlet was so far from the bed that there was no convenient way of using a plugged-in device. - The aircon was not adjustable. It was operated with just a button; on or off.

I recently stayed at SAVV Hotel in March/April 2023. I have stayed in George Town a number of times over 10 years and this (relatively new) hotel is really working very hard to look after guests and now tops my list! Everything was fantastic - staff very friendly, outstandingly helpful and professional from reception, cleaning, to security and maintenance. Hotel is spotless and the small pool gorgeous to cool off in (cleaned regularly). Busy location but I liked this as a solo traveller and felt very safe - easy to catch a Grab car at hotel entrance. Special mention to Mae and Kathy who made my breakfast every day - thinking about that great homemade jackfruit jam! Thanks everyone for making my stay so enjoyable. See you next year! Good spot for a pleasant and laid-back holiday. You may wander around to reach the restaurants and cafes. The hotel also provided pamphlets about Georgetown, including activities and places to visit. The family suite is spacious, comfortable, and tidy. They also have a security guard on duty. The staff is nice and approachable. We had a good experience there. Unfortunately, the facilities are limited. We stayed for a week, but the bedsheet was not changed according to hotel rules. They will supply new shower towels when they make up the room, but not tissue rolls. We had to request it at the front desk, and they delivered it the next day (we understood, maybe because it's only the two of them on duty). The WiFi signal is intermittent. A family suite room does not have a mini refrigerator. When we arrived, the telephone cable had been disconnected. There are just a few charging plugs. Furthermore, Trip.com states that breakfasts are available at the hotel's front desk. However, they do not provide breakfast. I hope this gets rectified on the website. Thank you very much. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant stay.

We booked this hotel via Booking.com using our credit card to secure the room On arrival, and after filling out the relevant forms we were asked for payment as expected, at this point they disclosed it was only cash and we could not use our credit cards. Even when we showed them the booking that had no mention of the cash only policy. So, it is now late in the day and they are the most unhelpful staff we have met during our current year long trip (that bad), they would not even give us access to the WiFi to arrange another room. After nearly 3 hours and constant calls to Booking.com we finally agreed no cancellation fee would apply despite it being the hotels mistake....they would not agree to the waiver of the fee until I would not leave. They even showed me an email their manager had sent to Booking.com showing this was a regular occurrence. There are many very good hotels in Georgetown...stay clear of this one. We moved to the Royale Chelung 10 minutes away... fantastic service by very helpful people... It may have been a nice hotel, however the management and staff do not care!!! STAY WELL CLEAR

When I came there on a rainy day around chinese new year, the old guy at the reception shouted : ” fully booked” agressively, and then when I show him the booking on my phone from Hotels.com, he was a bit kinder, he grumbled about Hotels.com and then offered me a room without window without even offering a discount. I refuses because it wasn't what I had payed for, then he told me they had an other hotelandI could stay there but I had to wait for a guy with a car coming soon to drive me there, I waited for more than an hour then he drove me to the other side of the city to an hotel really crap (foto) and an other room wirhout window, I was really furious, I told then, then emailled them I wanted to cancel and get a full refund, they never replied. As soon I found a new hotel I contacted Hotels.com, they could not reach the hotel, they promised to do their best but 3 days later they had done nothing they even made a confusion with another hotel I had booked thru them, they send me messages every 5/6 days saying they still could not reach the hotel but they keep up trying, and then 2 weeks passed and nothing more, I asked them what was going on: They said they could not reach the hotel and in this case their politic was :no refund! And generously they offered me a 10$ credit! So on Hotels.com they can book for u a room in an hotel already fully booked, and then if the hotel do not reply at your request it can gleefully going away with the money and rent rooms that do not exist! In the normal world, in a justice suit if a party doesn't show up at the court he will lost, the absentee is always wrong, with Hotels.com it's the opposite!

Absolutely terrible. I walk in at 10am, and the guy at the counter does not welcome me, but instead asks for over 100myr. Poor customer service from him, he maybe be new but it would be worth that he gets some training on how to deal with customers. My first room was very dirty. There were stains around the bed, there were stains on the towel, the bathroom had not been cleaned properly, it very disgusting. The cleaners did not look like official cleaners as they were not dressed in uniform. The cupboards were dusty. I asked to move room, and the lady was very kind and moved room. However this room smelt of cigarettes!!! It was vile. Again there was same problem with the room not being clean. I felt incredibly disgusted because whose spit and body fluid could In that room. I instead checked out and found that the manager was rude to his staff. I did not get a refund on my room but did end up with all the extra cash I had to pay.

Despite reporting this issue to the receptionist, who insisted it was operational, I was even unable to receive messages on WhatsApp. The room, while somewhat compact, is manageable for a brief stay. An odd design choice is the air conditioning unit, which is positioned directly opposite the bed. This made it uncomfortable to use at night, as the airflow directly targeted the sleeping area.
