Carlton George Hotel

Central Glasgow|0.21km from Gallery of Modern Art
Just back from a overnight stay and can’t believe the difference in a few years with Carlton George. We were so impressed on our last visit and so much has changed. I am genuinely not one for leaving negative reviews but I feel these need to be addressed as it definitely isn’t your usual Carlton George experience. We booked an executive room with lounge access. No issues with room. Comfortable bed and good shower. Mini bar and decanters. My partner had booked extras which was lovely when we arrived. Part of our package was 3 course meal in rooftop restaurant. The restaurant is lovely and amazing views over glasgow. When we arrived we were taken over to be seated and given menu ( which wasn’t the market menu that we had booked) We then waited about 15 mins to be asked if we wanted a drink. The restaurant only had 2 other tables of customers so wasn’t busy. There was around 4 staff all huddled around bar and could see we were waiting and the fact we were looking over no one seemed bothered. The waiter did eventually explain they were learning a new app to order which was fine but no attention was given to waiting customers. This seemed to be a running theme afterwards. The food was mediocre definitely not the quality we had before or what you are paying for. The lounge was self service. We couldn’t find the ice when we arrived. Behind the lounge is the kitchen and we could hear someone moving around. We asked if they could help us. The chef came out not happy and told us there the bell was ( I might add was not in an obvious place) extremely rude. There was no other staff member around to ask. The mixers were all 2 litre bottles that everyone was sharing. I found it a bit bizarre after pandemic they would have this. The snacks again were not really up to much. I’ve never had popcorn that wasn’t flavoured at all but they had it there. Even some plain crisps would have been better but these are little things. The final straw this morning was breakfast. Now we raved about breakfast to everyone last time we were here, it was outstanding. Also for an extra £5 you get it delivered to your room. The breakfast that arrived was abysmal. We went for Scottish breakfast. 2 potatoes scones, lorne slice tiny amount of beans, egg and no bacon. Turns out the chef forgot to put that on the plate. Toast was not toasted. All these things might not seem important to some people but I genuinely couldn’t fault anything on our last visit. i think a little more tlc is needed altogether. Mainly the customer service. Checking your customers aren’t waiting to long and they have everything they need, not snapping at customers who are asking for help, and maybe an extra member of staff in helping the chef plate up the food so it’s acceptable to the customer.

We stayed during Christmas season and there was a Xmas market next door. The hotel is spacious and all the necessary facilities, including kitchen and washing machine are provided.

I get what this hotel is trying to do, but it doesn't do it that well! I had good communication prior to my stay, a few texts reminding me. I liked the self check in screen, saves time. The room itself was supposed to be a 'queen' but it was extremely cramped, the bed was a small double at best and there was a weird single bunk bed over the double, which made the room feel so small and oppressive. Floor to ceiling windows in the bathroom were inconvenient. There was a door joining my room to the next which was less than ideal. The whole hotel was very noisy, you could hear doors opening and closing all over the place. There was a lot of noise coming from the room next door which was made worse by the door, as this let more noise in. The party eventually stopped about 3am. This wasn't just me, my colleague had to ask someone to come up and stop a party in the hallway at 1am and he was 2 floors up. No kettle, no water, pretty basic room. This would do for one night maximum IF there was nowhere else.

The triple room is on the top of the building, quiet and clean, like a castle. There is breakfast, bathroom and toilet. Stayed 2 nights. Close to the square, shopping center and subway. It is 1.5 kilometers to the long-distance bus station.

The English breakfast was hearty and delicious. The hotel has complete facilities, elegant environment and high security. It is only a 5-minute walk from the university where my daughter is studying. There is a cafe downstairs, and afternoon tea is convenient.

This hotel is located not far from George Square and is also excellently connected with Queen Street train station and the airport (Bus 500). The check-in also went wonderfully a few hours before, although I had paid 5 pounds per night on top. The room was quite clean at the first glance, unfortunately I found orange stains on my pillows. The lighting concept of my room can definitely be reconsidered. Otherwise, relatively trouble-free stay. Downstairs there is a cafe, where you can linger as usual in a lounge.

Thank you to the staff, as a solo traveller I was quite nervous but I felt so safe. Check in was smooth and friendly. The hotel is clean, stylish and smart. You need your room key to use the lifts so I felt so safe going to my room. I stayed in a double room and it was so spacious! Everything was tidy and well placed. Even though there was a fun fair on the next street it didn’t really bother me when I shut the window. It was my first time staying in an apart-hotel and I would definitely recommend! I didn’t know that having ice in the freezer and cutlery would make me so happy haha. I could chill my water and have a lovely meal in my room without having to fork out for a more expensive takeaway. I used the Tesco express down the street to get myself fresh food. The bathroom had a lovely heated towel Rail too so I had the warmest, fluffiest towel! Down in the lobby they have a Brita water filter, board games, extra kitchen equipment and food and drink. Will certainly return if I ever visit Glasgow again!
