I drive up and back from Georgia to Kentucky just about every year. Two years ago, I decided to break up the drive by overnighting at the Waverly. I enjoyed it so much that, this year, I spent a night on the way up and another on the way back. I arrive in time for the 5 p.m. happy hour. The homemade pimento cheese is the best, and guests chat informally on the front porch over their sips and nibbles. The downtown promenade of shops and restaurants is just 5 minutes away, so it's an easy stroll to supper. In the morning, the breakfast is outstanding and plentiful. The inn is quaint, the rooms are well decorated, and the beds/pilows very comfortable. The owners and staff go above and beyond as well. During my second night there this past week, a work crew mending the street a few blocks away decided to use jackhammers and some kind of machine that sounded like a jet airplane -- well into the night. At about 9:30, owner Mike texted me to ask if I would like to move to a room at the front of the inn. I gratefully accepted. Thankfully I also travel with ear plugs, and each room comes with a sleep machine that emits a sonorous white noise. My head hit the pillow and I was sound asleep until morning. What a great place. I have told all of my family members, who also make long treks through the mountains, that this is the best option to break up tedious drives! It's a vacation within a vacation. Five stars for sure!
