Hilton Houston Plaza/Medical Center

A Stage IV cancer diagnosis makes your world stop: so many unknowns, so many decisions, so much uncertainty. When seeking treatment at MD Anderson, I selected to stay at the Hilton Medical Center. As a Gold Status member, certain privileges like room upgrades and food credits are afforded to the customer. I have been staying at this hotel on each trip to MD Anderson Cancer Center since October of 2022. Most times, my stay had to be modified, either extended or shortened. This is quite common, and, as the hotel staff acknowledged, something they work with on a daily basis. When undergoing treatments, flexibility is key. I have never had an issue modifying my stay. Sadly, this was not the case on my most recent trip in February 2023. I was booked for a two night stay, but had to go home a day early because I was literally too sick to undergo chemotherapy. When I checked out about 10AM, a manager (Karla) informed me she had chosen to enforce the one night penalty policy. This had NEVER been done before, and when I expressed my concern, she told me several different versions of untruths. She said the ”policy had changed” and also that she ”tried to remove the charge and the computer would not allow her to do so.” When I called the Hilton Honors Customer Service, I spoke with Carl who explained that the policy states that the hotel ”may” charge fees. It is at the discretion of the hotel employee. Carl called the hotel and spoke with Courtney, who said I would not be charged for the additional night. But, Karla would have none of it. I was going to have to pay. On a follow up call with Karla on Tuesday, she refused to grant me the courtesy of waiving the cancellation penalty. She did acknowledge that the courtesy of waiving penalties had been granted in the past, but she was choosing to penalize a loyal Gold Status cancer patient who was so sick she had to return home immediately. I am extremely disappointed in how this situation was handled.

A majority of the employees need to attend hospitality school. I have never stayed at a hotel with employees who were so rude and had no interest in helping guests. This hotel was the host hotel for an event I was attending. My flight arrived really early. I called a few days prior to see if an early check-in would be an option. They recommended I call once I arrived. Unfortunately they did not have a room available and took my number to notify me as soon as it was ready. They never called. I was on the 11th floor and next to a suite. On two occasions I had to call downstairs because their music was so loud….at 5am. It sounded like a night club and smelled like ****. The hotel did take care of this immediately which I appreciated. Breakfast was included with the hotel stay and vouchers were given out at check-in. Olga has to be the rudest person I have ever witnessed in a restaurant setting. She yelled at guests, demanded to know where our vouchers were, and was very belittling to her co-worker Susan. Susan was amazing and did her best to make-up for Olga’s rudeness. Since this is a buffet, I understand that they do not want people to take food to go. Here is my thought: they were constantly running out of food. Some of us ran out of time to eat and still get to the event. One person waited and finally had to leave. She took her fruit. Olga ran after her and took the plate of fruit from her. It was shocking. I guess it is better to throw the fruit in the trash verses allowing her to eat the fruit in her room. Olga was extremely rude to all of us. I never returned to the restaurant because I was so turned off by her attitude. As a company, IHG should be embarrassed by her behavior and her treatment of guests. I also understand that many hotels are not cleaning rooms on a daily basis. I am completely fine with this. On several occasions I requested extra coffee and creamer from the front desk. Each time I was told they did not have anything. I asked how to get more coffee and was told it was not their problem. I requested extra towels and received a dirty washcloth and towel. As I mentioned we there for an event. On Friday night with a bar full of paying customers, they closed the bar at 10pm. Southwest had major flight cancellations requiring people to be there for an extra night. When I went downstairs to secure another night for my friends who had checked out, the front desk employee was too interested in his phone to help me and suggested I use a third party booking site. For $170/night, I expected a lot more from a hotel. IHG should be appalled with this hotel staff. IHG needs to have a major review of their hotel staff at this location. I finally started laughing at the lack of service because I thought it couldn’t get worse and it repeatedly did. This staff needs a lot of training to be in the hospitality world.

Breakfast is actually misleading, especially for mainland customers. What is it? Coffee, packaged instant oatmeal, granola bars. That's all. Please, don't call it ”breakfast”, okay? Ctrip's big brothers, don't care about your compatriots, okay? There are free cars. There are a lot of rooms, with more than 30 square meters. It seems that an extra bed can be added, but a certificate is required. If you want to go to the Medical Center and have a car, it is an ideal location. There is a Fiesta supermarket nearby, very popular. Unknown how to bring children? There are a lot of rooms for the children to move around.

Check in and out was fast and easy. Room was clean and roomy. Bed a bit hard. Ac works great. Good cable tv. Area quiet. Bathroom smells like urine. Micro and fridge worked. One light didn't work. Didn't try breakfast. Lots of shopping and dining in walking distance. Smoothie King is seconds away next door. Overall, decent overnight stay.

I have stayed here 4 times. It is my favorite place to stay in Houston. You will not find a better team than Michael R. Giangrosso or Eli Rodriguez. We were stranded in Houston during the ice storm in Feb of 2021 for 10 days. We could not have asked for a more accommodating team from management to house keeping!! You wont be sorry

The location of the hotel is particularly good. It takes less than 6 or 7 minutes to drive to Rice U; there are many restaurants around the hotel, Jack in the box across the window, a BBQ restaurant is next door, just a few steps away there is panda express, you can also meet the needs of Chinese food, buy There is a Fiesta supermarket next to the fruit and food, and you can buy daily necessities for the children who are in school. Target is across the road. In addition, there are Bank of America, Tmobile and Verizon across the road. It is extremely convenient. Much more convenient than the hotel next to Rice. Breakfast is simple, but not bad. I stayed for a week without getting bored. Bagels, croissants, cupcake, waffle, milk yogurt, cream cheese, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, meatloaf, bacon, etc., plus fruits, various drinks , Very healthy and balanced. The hotel is also very clean, the entire hotel is non-smoking, so don't worry about the smell of smoke.

American breakfast, you can eat whatever you want and pack it, there is no limit. The twin room can accommodate 4 people, and there is also a sofa, which can accommodate 5 people. There is no need for an extra bed. The hotel is located near the Houston Medical Center, and there are supermarkets and grocery stores nearby, so it is more convenient to buy things. It’s a little far away from Chinatown. If you want to make your own Chinese food and buy raw materials, it’s a little farther away. The hotel has a kitchen where you can cook your own meals. There is a parking lot, but there is a charge, but it is not charged by the hotel guests. If you come to visit your friends, you only need to report the room number to park for free. The hotel staff are very nice, very friendly and kind, and sincerely willing to help others. The hotel has a laundry room, the laundry and drying are done twice, this is better
