Fern Grotto Inn

The Fern Grotto Inn was a lovely place to stay for our vacation! Resorts are great but they tend to be crowded and hectic. For this vacation we wanted a laid-back, relaxed vibe so we booked the Ohana House with another couple. Everything was very clean upon arrival and there were four beers and chocolates waiting for us in the fridge. The large kitchen and dining area was the perfect place to hang out, make breakfasts and dinners and plan our excursions for the day. There are kayaks and paddle boards available to use and launch right onto the Wailua river. We also used the snorkeling gear to swim with turtles up at Anini Beach and used one of the available coolers to pack lunches. The Ohana House has a full-sized refrigerator so we went shopping at Costco and Safeway, which set us up for some affordable meals. The kitchen was well stocked with coffee, baggies, foil, dishes, flatware and just about everything else you need for your stay. The front porch was the perfect spot for happy hour and the back lawn area has a table and chairs near the BBQ for dining al fresco. They provide you with earplugs to block out those pesky rooster calls that seem to occur at 3:00 am. The Coconut Marketplace is very close by with an ABC store, various clothing stores, restaurants, and souvenir shops. It is within easy walking distance to Passion Bakery Café for breakfast. Get yourself up early for the short walk to the beach to watch the sunrise! The Fern Grotto Inn is a great location because they are at a half way point to just about everywhere in Kauai. If we go back to Kauai, we would stay here again.

Everything was ok until our AC unit went out during 3rd day. Same day we contacted Paul but since we couldn't get ahold of him we saw this other woman who seemed to be the housekeeper, moments later Paul came into our unit and said he couldn't do anything about it and would take weeks to months to fix he had a defensive demeanor which was uncalled for because we were trying to be understanding then proceeded to tell us to sleep with windows open and left, which i will not do with many people walking and looking inside our unit since we were in front. Even if i left windows open to air out room you had to leave blinds open which made me uncomfortable and unsafe. I specifically narrowed on Airbnb AC unit rooms because I cannot sleep without it. He got upset when I asked for partial refund so opened dispute with Airbnb instead to avoid talking to him. I didn't come to vacation to be without AC for almost our whole stay and argue with strangers. Definitely would not stay here again.

Our 5-nights stay at The Fern Grotto Inn was truly comfortable. We spent our days kayaking and hiking on the Wailua River, surfing in Hanalei, and sight seeing the Waimea Canyon. The inn is a great central location to tour other areas of the island easily, and Kapa'a has great places to eat and shop. After a full day of activity it was so nice to relax back at the inn and all its home like comforts and amenities.

We wanted to be reminded of Hawaii in the good ‘ol days …The Fern Grotto Inn allowed us to just breathe & relax in lovely, fully accommodating cottages in a lush setting.(And help yourself to the abundance of mango trees on the property! They were so sweet!). And speaking of sweet, the staff treated us like family! We will definitely be back! Mahalo! Michael & Karen Smith

We were lucky in that we rented a top floor space, because two days before our arrival, the Wailua River flooded and mudded out the entire area. While we were there, there were definite challenges, but you'd never know it from our lodgings. We were treated so well by everyone, and loved staying in such a central location, perfect as a 'home base' for many adventures. In fact we referred to it as 'home' during our entire trip. I'd read so many horror stories about bugs and pests inside, but we had none at all. Everything was clean and really, just as perfect as can be, given the circumstances. We will absolutely stay here again on future visits.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Fern Grotto. I wish we could have stayed longer. The accommodations were clean and spacious. The availability of using their kayaks made the trip extra special. We highly recommend them.

We stayed in Coco Unit C. It was everything we had hoped it would be. Spotless in every regard. Super comfy bed and pillows and wonderful windows on two sides. Great to have a drip coffee maker and coffee bean grinder for the morning brew. Shower is out of this world with two seperate shower heads with lots of pressure. Huge! We took a 2 hour ride with the bikes along the ocean one morning and kayaked the river at sunset. Wifi, tv & music! Safeway is within walking distance as well as a ton of eating options and food trucks. Lastly, I want to mention the great management and staff. Wonderful people! We travel a lot and always enjoy finding a gem of a place like Fern Grotto Inn.

Such a sweet cottage with everything anyone could need. Much more relaxing than a resort or block of condos. We used fins mask and snorkels twice, which was great! Also there are many coolers available, including a backpack one that we used three times. Bikes are in a bit of disrepair, but we did manage a nice ride on the nearby bike path. Coco A has an awesome back yard with table and chairs. Highly recommend Fern Grotto!!

The Fern Grotto Inn was convenient, comfortable and has wonderful amenities. Our unit was clean and updated with modern kitchen appliances and a modern tiled, two shower head shower. Even had an Alexa that we enjoyed listening to Hawaiin music on. We used the bikes, a cooler, and ice was provided for the coolers. There were also kayaks and boogie boards to borrow, that we didn't have a chance to use. It is conveniently located not far from the airport, making a drive to Princeville or Waimea easy trips. This place thought of everything, including welcome gifts on arrival!
