The hotel is nestled in a scenic valley in Keswick, within walking distance of the lake. Parking is free in the front yard. There is an elevator. The rooms are small and poorly heated, making them a bit cold. Breakfast is à la carte, but you can only order one item, which is somewhat odd.

A glorious setting at the edge of Grange village, 4.5 miles south of Keswick. A tranquil spot where there is little light pollution. You can hear the birds, see the sheep and new-born lambs from the dining-room window where bird feeders ensure on-going activity to enjoy. Our room was very well appointed with quality, comfortable beds, thick, fluffy towels and wonderful shower facitilies and bath. Staff kindly brought in an additional chair for me to look out over the balcony since I was recovering from cancer treatment. The decor was tasteful and homely and everything spotlessly clean. Staff at reception (Carol, Shynese and team) were very friendly, welcolming and helpful and clearly enjoyed their job. Fantastic service at breakfast and dinner from James and the team...Hazel, Anne, BJ, Peter, Derek, Arte and others. Breakfasts were ample and delicious but the creativity and taste of the courses served at Dinner by Chris and his team were outstanding. Amuse bouche, fresh bread and rolls; varied starters and main meals, dessert and coffee with little treats were delightful. One night we had an additional cheese plate and port. All the meat and fish were beautiful cooked and tender as were accompanying vegetables. The menu changes daily and £58 for three courses seemed very fair given the wonderful quality of the food and the care that had ovbiously been taken. Overall, this is well worth the money and we hope to return on many occasions. Thank you for a break that was a real tonic and lifting of spirits.

Plucked out of the air by TripAdvisor for a last-minute break near Keswick ….Borrowdale Gates. We loved it ….We live not too far away and often visit Keswick and the popular spots in the Lake District, but this area of Borrowdale was something special. Driving down the east of Derwentwater, through the little village of Grange, arriving at the Gates Hotel. Simple check-in with Shynese and shown to our lovely room 10. A short ride down to Keswick on the western road …fantastic views of the lake; then back to the Gates, rest and down for dinner. Fillet of beef and corn-fed chicken ….beautifully presented and tasty, with a delicious dessert to follow. A good night’s sleep, then down for a hearty Cumbrian breakfast. Off to Cockermouth (loved the independent shops and the history ….and the Moon and Sixpence coffee shop); then onto Buttermere and a short walk along the lakeside ….such stunning scenery - we must go back and walk the circular tour of the lake. Back to the Gates and refreshing drinks on the lawn; chose to eat in Keswick, but so crowded. Our last night’s sleep, then our last Cumbrian breakfast before saying goodbye ….but we’ll be back. Many Thanks to James and all the staff …see you soon.

We have been coming as a family for many years and it holds a special place in our hearts. This visit was no exception, the staff were wonderful - remembering all the children’s names, attentive and friendly. The food, was as always, a highlight, we always save our dog Monty a sausage from breakfast! The view over the garden from our room (High Spy) is beautiful.

Our trip to The Borrowdale Gates Hotel was as perfect as it gets- superb food, first class service, warm, friendly staff for whom nothing was any trouble, quiet, serene, beautiful setting, comfortable, elegant public areas and accomodation. It has somehow managed to retain old world hospitality and standards whilst allowing guests to feel relaxed and at home. Special thanks to Carol, Stefan, James and Arty for their exceptional service and very warm welcome, and to all of the staff who looked after us so well. We can’t wait to return very soon.
