Pub ran out of gas, no fryers so no chips, fish, scampi. Had the steak pie, it is a pot of microwaved beef stew with a piece of flaky pastry placed on top, I thought this stopped 20 years ago, but no its £16.95! My daughter's chicken burger was a fried chicken breast covered in melted cheese, not horribly bad in itself but not a burger. Chips were replaced with three, yes three, new potatoes. Then the power went off too!

We stayed for three nights across the road in the sister pub the Salutation. Our room was clean and comfortable but probably overpriced as the en-suite facilities were tiny. The breakfast menu in the Horse and Farrier was somewhat limited and the cooked options further limited by the unavailability of one of the main options, scrambled egg and smoked salmon, on two of the mornings. The Cumbrian breakfast was fine except, my opinion only, a Cumbrian breakfast should always offer black pudding, which it didn’t. Evening meals in the H and F were also acceptable but not outstanding and we found the portions enormous which some people might regard as a good thing but not us! A little less on the plate would have appeared less daunting and might have encouraged us to enjoy a dessert (and spend more money!). On one night we ate in the Salutation and despite a much smaller menu we enjoyed an excellent meal, better than either meal at the H and F. We also found the Salutation a friendlier pub to drink in. This is no reflection on the H and F staff, who were unfailingly friendly and helpful but more a comment on the type of pub. In the Sally you can sit at the bar and chat to people as well as sit at a table and have a meal if you wish, that’s more difficult in the H and F which is more a dining pub with everyone sitting round tables (and no bar stools!).

We stopped for lunch after doing the railway walk from Keswick. A lovely village pub with lovely staff. My partner had the peri peri chicken salad which was well presented and plenty of it , he said it was lovely but slightly too hot, I had game pie with fresh vegetables and chunky chips which was very filling and very enjoyable. We sat in the beer garden with our dogs then a brisk walk back to Keswick. Would recommend and we will be back... Thank you.

Stopped by for food during our stay in threlkeld, very disappointed. Food was stale, I had the burger, most certainly reheated to the point were it was inedible, if I had to guess I’d say microwaved to death because it was rock hard around the edges, sent it back. Replaced it with a fresh meal at 2nd attempt as first replacement was incorrect. Also must state that the foreign guy serving the meals, possibly the manager was very rude to the young autistic waiter, not very pleasant to see and was very hard not to say something about it. The wife’s food was pretty bad also. Won’t return because of that.

Good quality food and reasonable price alongside friendly attentive service. Had steak pie and my friend had fish pie. Both meals tasty and plenty of food. It a Monday evening and although fairly quiet well staffed and all the staff made us feel welcome. Would recommend.

This was a birthday/ anniversary trip for 2 nights. Check-in was great, with friendly and welcoming staff. The pub itself and our room were warm, cosy, and really nicely decorated. The food was great: both the full Cumbian breakfast and the evening meal we had on the Saturday night. The reason I've given 3 stars out of 5 is that we had such a bad night last night (Saturday). We expect noise from the bar when we're staying in a pub; after all, the buildings are typically old and don't have sound insulation. However, given that the bar closes at 11.00pm, and allowing time for people to drink up and leave, it seems reasonable to hope that things will be quiet by midnight - but they weren’t. We were in room 6, above the far end of the bar. By 1.00 in the morning I couldn't take any more and went downstairs to ask for the noise to stop. To my surprise there was a member of staff there, who must have known how easily the sound travels but was allowing the noise to continue. It's such a shame to have to include this in my review, because otherwise we had a lovely stay. But consideration needs to be given to guests who are upstairs trying to sleep, especially if they are planning an early start for a long walk or climb, as many people must be who stay at this pub.

We stayed in the Saddleback Suite and it was amazing! It was super plush and comfortable. The bathroom was stunning and there was even a drying room next door which was welcome due to torrential rain that day, it enabled us to dry our wet coats. Keith showed us to our suite and he was the perfect host and made us feel very welcome. We ate in the restaurant that evening and would thoroughly recommend that too.

Beautiful rooms, great service (Keith is a legend!) and excellent, great value food. Only a 5 minute drive to Keswick and a great base for walks in the fells.
