Crown and Garter

We stayed at the Crown and Garter to kick off our Test Way expedition. It’s about as close as you can stay to the start (which is 2 miles away and steep climb!). Everything about our stay was exemplary. The staff were genuinely warm, highly personable and welcoming, going above and way beyond to help us - a perfect example of exceeding guest expectations. The room was very comfortable with modern decor and amenities as well as a plentiful supply of toiletries and teas/coffees. We ate both dinner and breakfast. These were reasonably priced, arrived promptly, good portion sizes and delicious. All in all we can thoroughly recommend everything about it. It is far and away the best accommodation of this type that I have stayed in. Thank you C&G, keep doing what you’re doing: it works!

We absolutely loved our stay at The Crown and Garter. The hotel itself is full of charm — cozy, comfortable, and beautifully kept. Our room was spotless and inviting, making it the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring. One of the highlights of our visit was the bar area, where we had the chance to meet and chat with some of the locals. The atmosphere was so friendly and welcoming — it truly felt like a home away from home. The staff were wonderful, attentive, and made sure every detail of our stay was enjoyable. We left with such fond memories and can’t wait to return. Highly recommend this gem in Newbury!

My mum and I stayed for 3 nights. Sammy was the highlight who looked after us and went over and above. However the overall impression was of a place that was understaffed and inefficient. On arrival we were asked to choose breakfast from a very selective menu. Despite completing correctly we arrived at breakfast the next day to be given the wrong breakfasts and wait 20 minutes for a coffee. On the 3rd day we arrived back at about 3.15 to be to,d our room hadn’t been serviced. I raised the issues with the manager who defended the situation by saying no o e else had complained and they cleaned the bar first then the new check ins then serviced the existing rooms at about 4pm. Overall not a great experience. They gave me 10% off the food bill which amounted to about £15 across a £700 spend over 3 days. The place is a lovely setting and with the right management could be excellent.

We had a wonderful overnight stay at the Crown and Garter. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome. Sammy took great care of us throughout our stay—attentive, personable, and genuinely going the extra mile to make our visit special. The rooms were exceptionally clean, beautifully decorated, and very well appointed. The food was excellent and the service consistently top-notch. We would highly recommend the Crown and Garter and look forward to returning!

We stayed for one night at the Crown and Garter. Lovely well appointed rooms in a beautiful courtyard setting. Room was clean with a good variety of teas and coffee along with both still and sparkling water. Excellent information provided in the room booklet. Heating adjustments worked well. Bathroom well stocked with toiletries and plenty of towels. Lovely shower, and the automatic light in the small vestibule is a thoughtful touch - it gently illuminates the way as you enter, preventing you from stepping straight into the sleeping area, which I know some people prefer to avoid. The courtyard area outside has been beautifully designed with many separate seating areas. Whilst the evening menu wasn’t extensive, the food was very good and service attentive. We were asked to pre order our breakfast the night before with a menu provided for us to choose from. This helped manage the orders in the morning and the breakfast was excellent. Good choice of traditional English breakfast, toast, eggs, croissant and granola with yogurt. Plenty of parking available too. Great hosts and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for a lovely stay. Thoroughly recommend.
