My first Ryokan experience and it was great. Beautiful interior, good location to walk some parts of the Nakasendo trail, lovely traditional Japanese food, nice onsen and very kind people. They do their utmost to make you feel comfortable. The hotel has been owned by the same family for ages. Highly recommended.

Very good

The hotel is very tired and in need of renovation. The onsen is dirty. The food is good, but it's buffet-style. The reception staff is excellent, which makes the hotel experience even better.

I've been using this when I come to Kiso for a long time, and it's still as good as ever.

The hotel is situated within walking distance from the train station and they have bus shuttle service as well. The room is spacious, staff are friendly and approachable. Free use of yakuta within the premises. Seperate male/female onsen are available for use. Samurai ryokan is amazing and staff is very attentive to our needs.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and there are several good restaurants and hiking trails within walking distance. That said, our room felt cramped, and the building had a slightly worn, almost grungy feel. Breakfast was mediocre and expensive at US$23 per person per day. Note our stay was in the main building, as opposed to the newer annex.

A typical experience overall, with very kind and helpful staff. The team is attentive to guests’ requests and provides a high level of service. However, the property could benefit from some renovation, as the facilities and furnishings feel quite dated.

Nice hotel with reported very long history (over 300 years advertised). Stayed in the new annex building, new comfortable room. Nice little town. Enjoyed a tasty breakfast too

Highly recommended. Excellent accommodation and very friendly staff with delicious food and a very large onsen. The best onsen I have stayed at so far in Japan!

An excellent traditional inn on the old Nakasendō. Kiso is a great base, the team were very helpful for restaurant recommendations. Their onsen is tattoo friendly too, one of the few we have found which are so very happy with that treat.

This was one of the favorite places I stayed in all of Japan. The staff and the food were excellent. The whole experience made time standstill and we were immersed in a more traditional Japanese setting My teenage children absolutely love this place also

Convenient location, it was right off the Nakasendo trail. Clean, hospitable and quiet. The Onsen was lovely after a day of walking. It was terrific to have laundry facilities right on site. I absolutely recommend and would be happy to go again.

Beautiful stay at the hotel. It was close to the Gongonfaki waterfall trail. River views and sound were nice when you leave the windows open. First class food too. This place is pnly to recommend.

We stayed for one night and had a lovely experience! It is not our first experience in traditional hotel and this one is truly good! Location is right on the river offering lovely views, food was delicious, they did a show! Indoor and outdoor traditional onsen, love it! And staff was very welcoming and tourist friendly, they explained absolutely everything. So I highly recommend this hotel!

We stayed here for one night as part of a self guided walking tour on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a lovely evening! The facilities are very clean, the onsen is terrific, and there is a bar downstairs to hang out and chat with other people. We ate dinner and breakfast there which were both good--perhaps a little more geared towards visitors rather than Japanese people, but still good. The dinner is rather cheesy but a lot of fun. There is a shuttle to take people to the train station in the morning which was a nice time saver.

Much more than we had the right to expect from a Ryokan. Set over 5 floors with a lovely reception area and onsen on the ground floor, the rooms are traditional in having tatami matting and futon mattresses but do have aircon and WiFi. The meals are amazing - We had a samurai feast (with the drum to welcome us) and then a traditional sukiyaki the following evening. Breakfasts are fresh and traditionally Japanese. The welcome is warm and friendly (thanks especially Yukiko) and it’s ideally placed for the beautiful Kiso valley post villages.
