Our train was delayed by a typhoon, so we arrived much later than expected and almost missed dinner. The staff could not have been kinder — they waited for us patiently and still served the full Summer Kaiseki Dinner Course we had booked. Their grace and professionalism after such a delay set the tone for the entire stay. The kaiseki dinner was excellent — beautifully balanced, seasonal, and among the best I have had in Kyoto. Each dish reflected summer ingredients at their peak. For a Western palate, some flavors may feel subtle rather than exotic, but the overall harmony and craftsmanship were unmistakable. I also ordered a wagyu steak as an extra course, which was of outstanding quality. Breakfast can be served either in your room or in a private dining room. As we were staying in multiple rooms, we chose to eat together in the private dining room. Both the Japanese and Western breakfasts were superb — carefully prepared and elegantly presented. Guests can enjoy a bath in their own room’s cedar tub or request a larger bath to be prepared in a separate bath area. I tried the latter — spacious enough for a taller guest or a couple — and found it deeply relaxing after a long travel day. I stayed on the second floor of the main building in a room dating back to the 1800s, with golden fusuma doors and a strong sense of history. Sitting with tea by the garden in the morning light was quietly unforgettable; I didn’t want to leave until checkout. Our room attendant was wonderful — precise, caring, and attentive in every detail. Although she spoke very little English, her warmth and professionalism made communication effortless. The rooms were spotless, and the futon laid out during dinner was firm yet very comfortable. Hiiragiya’s location is excellent — right in the heart of Kyoto, within easy walking distance of the Nishiki Market and many central temples, yet once inside it feels entirely still and private. What makes Hiiragiya truly special is how tradition is not displayed but lived — felt in the rhythm of the service, the quiet gestures of care, and the continuity of a house that has welcomed guests for generations. Hiiragiya embodies the spirit of Kyoto hospitality: refined, gracious, and timeless. I can’t wait to return — this ryokan is a destination in itself.

We had gotten a tip from friends thatvhad stayed here some years back. So when planning our Japan-holiday and stay in Kyoto we were happy spending our last Night here. The building itself are amazing. The old history of the house and room were just wow. Also still loved all the modern amenities in the room such as Japanese toilet, chatgers etc. The small bathroom felt like a mini-spa and the futons prepared for sleeping gave us the best sleep. We also had the set menu and japanese breakfast all prepared in the room. Quite the experience - will never regret - but it was sometimes challenging when it came to some of the dishes. But again; that’s all part of the experience. We loved the stay and the people working there was over the top superfriendly and service-minded. Wifi also…:) would def recommend for one Night of traditional Japanese living.
