Unfortunately, the hotel has deteriorated significantly. There are problems with damp and mold. It seems they're skimping on the air conditioning. Apparently, it doesn't get any more humid when the room is empty. I had booked a family suite and had plenty of space. However, the bathroom is one floor below. This bathroom stinks and has damp damage. There are also small animals in it. The management was already aware of this. Since both family suites are affected, I had to move to a smaller room. They still charged me the same price. Most importantly, this room also had a smell consistent with a damp problem. In fact, I then saw that the air conditioner was completely covered in black mold. I took a photo of it and showed it to reception, complaining very clearly. They blamed it on the humid weather. But that's a poor excuse. I spent two weeks traveling through southern Japan, staying in many hotels. All of them were impeccably clean, and the air conditioning systems were hygienic everywhere. They apologized, but offered no compensation. The fact that the room is only cleaned by 12:00 PM is also not ideal. Unfortunately, there has been a significant drop in quality compared to my stay two years ago. The central location remains excellent. However, they must prevent damp damage and unpleasant odors. Both are unacceptable for this hotel, especially in Japan.

We stayed here for 4 nights in a 2 bed room. Hotel is new and a short walk from the metro station. Also walking distance to the active part of Kyoto including Gion, Kawarmarchi, and Pontocho Alley. The hotel is small/boutique with a small but nice lobby, bar, and a patio. Would recommend this hotel.

The Kyoto Shijo Takakura Grand Reverie is a completely decent hotel, but I just couldn’t deal with the opaque windows in our room. Pictures of the hotel show that the windows are clear and unobstructed. But our two windows were frosted over, completely opaque. I yearned to see out, to feel a part of the outside. I wanted to see the skies and check the weather. Our room felt like windowless room in the bowels of a cruise ship. There was no airflow and the room was dark. The window would only open 5” and the other window was sealed shut. We couldn’t get the thermostat to work. The room felt stifling and the air didn’t feel fresh. In a way, our room with no view forced us to get out and get out early. I wanted to go out into the fresh air and explore. If you’re claustrophobic or require fresh air, and appreciate a clear window, then this might not be the hotel for you.
Response from Property: Dear Kimbers W Thank you for taking the time to share your honest feedback. We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations, particularly regarding the room’s windows and ventilation. We understand how important natural light, fresh air, and a sense of openness can be—especially for guests sensitive to enclosed spaces. Your comments are taken seriously, and we will review how our rooms are presented online to ensure expectations are clear. We appreciate your kind words about the overall quality of the hotel and hope that, despite this issue, you were still able to enjoy your time exploring Kyoto. Thank you again for staying with us and for helping us improve with your valuable input. Kyoto Shijo Takakura Hotel grandereverie

What a pitty - the place is just a couple of years. I enjoyed my stay in 2023 and was happy to return in 25. Just to find the place run down badly The maisonette I had booked was a disaster. The bathrooms in the basement full mold and small animals. The smell was terrible. And the hotel staff pretty clearly knew about that. It was hard to find a room which was not smelly. White in the case of the maisonettes it’s obviously a problem with construction mistakes (insufficient water isolation against ground) it seems they are farming mold in other rooms by switching off the AC and not cleaning it. Furthermore, it’s hard to enjoy your stay relaxed or handle a jet-lag if you know that housekeeping will not work after 11.59 am. It’s still a nice location and an interesting concept. But management seems really poor. That after the objective necessity to downgrade the booked room (the mould-zoo-smelly maisonette) for a smaller room neither partial refund nor excuse are given, were not the decisive point but added added to the big disappointment. I will not return and cannot understand how they upkeep their high ranking here on TripAdvisor.

We stayed in 4 hotels while in Japan, and this was my favorite. It wasn’t the most expensive, and it didn’t have the largest room, but they completely won me over with their warm, excellent service, and with just getting the important stuff right. Very comfortable bed. Provided packets for pour-over coffee in the room. Fantastic breakfast, brought to our room at our chosen time. I think this last one went the furthest for me. I also liked the Matcha drink on our arrival. It’s a little weird how they do the key to the room, but ultimately they won me over. They’re also located in a great part of Kyoto and we really enjoyed our 5 nights here.
Response from Property: Dear Latie Thank you very much for your kind words and for choosing to stay with us during your trip to Japan. We are truly honored to hear that out of the four hotels you stayed in, ours was your favorite. It brings us great joy to know that our service, breakfast delivery, and small touches like the pour-over coffee and welcome matcha helped make your stay special. We're also happy to hear you found the bed comfortable and enjoyed our location in Kyoto. We understand the room key system may have felt a bit unusual at first, and we appreciate your openness to it. Thank you again for your thoughtful review—it means a lot to our entire team. We hope to welcome you back again in the future! Kyoto Shijo Takakura Hotel grandereverie

My wife and I just came back from Japan and had a wonderful stay at the Kyoto Shijo Takakura Hotel Grandereverie. The staff provided great service and anticipated our every need. Our room was very spacious (especially for Japan standards) and had plenty of amenities, as well as an ultra comfortable bed. Location was amazing, surrounded by nice restaurants and +/- 5 minutes walking distance from a metro station and Nishiki market. A nice treat was a newly built lobby bar that is now shown on the website pictures.
Response from Property: Dear AACN, Thank you for choosing Kyoto Shijo Takakura Hotel GrandeReverie and for your kind review. We are delighted to have helped you and your wife create wonderful memories of your trip to Kyoto, and we sincerely appreciate your thoughtful words. We will continue to strive for even higher levels of customer satisfaction. It would be our pleasure to welcome you again in the future. Warm regards, Kyoto Shijo Takakura Hotel GrandeReverie

Loved this little hotel. On a small quiet street just feet from the main drag. Rooms are large for Japan norms. Staff is soooo sweet and helpful. Breakfast is delivered to the room every morning. Delish and fresh. Beyond clean and comfy. The most sumptuous bed. Restaurants abound and laundromat literally across the small street. Just lovely.
