It felt more like a guesthouse than a hotel, with only a few rooms. The hotel staff were all young and very friendly, but seemed inexperienced; check-in took a long time. The heating was terrible. There was only one wall-mounted air conditioner. When we checked in at 3 pm, the room was a bit cold. We had to turn the air conditioner up to the maximum temperature for several hours before it warmed up. There were no other heating options in the room—no underfloor heating or heaters. The air conditioner was very loud, and even with the fan on its lowest setting, it was still noisy and disruptive to sleep. I barely slept the first night. I've stayed at five different ryokans during my previous trips to Japan, and none of them had problems with the heating. The hotel breakfast was okay, not a huge selection, but a server was always there to help grill the vegetables and beef, which felt quite welcoming. We also tried the hotel's sukiyaki for dinner. The beef was just average. For 12,000 yen per person, you could get much better A5 Wagyu beef at a dedicated sukiyaki restaurant, or even a sukiyaki place outside that costs around 300 yen per person. I decided to eat at the hotel because I saw other people's reviews saying the sukiyaki was good, but I was a bit disappointed. I've had much better sukiyaki at restaurants outside. The hotel's location is excellent, right next to Nijo Castle, and a kilometer walk to Kyoto Imperial Palace. Our room had a Japanese garden, which was beautiful, but the heating was insufficient, and the shower area near the garden was very cold. The hotel also provided guests with a box of complimentary Japanese snacks and drinks. Overall, the environment and service were quite good, but the facilities were lacking—the heating was inadequate, and the air conditioning was too noisy.

Response from Property: Thank you very much for staying with us and for taking the time to share such detailed and candid feedback.First of all, we sincerely apologize that our property size and facilities did not meet your expectations, and that your stay was accompanied by inconvenience and discomfort. We are especially sorry to hear that the heating system and air-conditioning noise in your room prevented you from having a comfortable rest, and we take this matter very seriously. We recognize that there is room for improvement in our air-conditioning equipment and overall temperature control throughout the building, in order to provide a more comfortable environment in accordance with seasonal and weather conditions. This will be addressed as an important area for future improvement. We also sincerely apologize for the time required during your check-in process. While we are grateful for your kind comments regarding our staff’s attitude, we fully acknowledge that a lack of experience resulted in a less smooth check-in experience. We will continue to strengthen both our training and operational systems to improve service quality.Regarding dining, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the breakfast experience, but we are very sorry that the sukiyaki dinner did not meet your expectations. Your feedback has been shared with our culinary team and will be used as a reference for future improvements in quality. On a more positive note, we sincerely appreciate your kind words regarding our location, the garden-view room environment, and the small welcome amenities provided. We truly value your honest feedback, and we will continue striving to improve both our facilities and services in order to provide a more comfortable and satisfying stay experience for all our guests.Thank you once again for your valuable comments.Nazuna Kyoto Nijo-jo Reception sraff

A truly awful hotel experience! They were completely silent! My friend and I booked this hotel during the National Day holiday, believing the price wasn't cheap. We thought we'd find a good hotel with high-quality service and the chance to experience traditional Japanese living, even if the price was a bit higher. This hotel advertises itself as high-end, meaning that providing excellent customer service is paramount and justifies the price. However, the service and amenities were completely subpar. First, the staff's English was so poor that my friend and I gave up trying to communicate. They were incredibly unskilled. When we asked about paid or free services, they couldn't understand us at all. While we're not native English speakers, we're experienced English speakers and assumed we were on the right track. Secondly, even though we understood, they didn't understand anything. They said they'd ask, wasting a lot of time waiting, and ultimately, no one answered our questions. Secondly, the air purifier was covered in dust, and the room had a faint smell of body odor. There was only one large bottle of ice water, and if you wanted more, you had to notify us before your scheduled time. (And they didn't even understand after that.) They're incredibly stingy. Third, the breakfast was absolutely awful. I almost vomited. They don't have a kitchen, and the waiter, wearing black gloves, brought out a bunch of food that looked like it had been microwaved. It was a shame, and this crappy breakfast cost 4,000 yen. Finally, when my friend and I left, the hotel gave us a home fragrance. My friend asked if we could give them an extra since we weren't a family group, so it wouldn't be easy to share. It was the usual routine: ask, wait, and then they told us each person could only have one. If we wanted more, we had to buy it, and it was charged per person. We weren't really greedy for the fragrance, but as a high-end hotel, shouldn't they have considered the way they gave it? Finally, my friend gently suggested they revamp the gifting system. Good job, I didn't get it! In short, avoid these fancy hotels if you can; chain hotels are the best choice.

It's more like a Japanese family hotel. The environment is cozy. But the hotel is small. The hardware is a bit rudimentary. It's not like what a hotel of this price should have. There is no laundry service. The grilled vegetables and fish for breakfast are very interesting. The steak is also delicious. You can choose the degree of doneness you want. When I was having breakfast, I told the staff who helped grill the vegetables that I really liked the Japanese white miso and wanted to buy some to take back. The staff remembered it and found a recipe for white miso for us. I felt warm in my heart and made up for the lack of hardware facilities.

The room is very average, a very ordinary homestay. It is inconvenient to go up and down the stairs and go out.

It's a pity that we spent most of our time outside! But the room was really clean, the Japanese service was very thoughtful, and the toiletries were very useful! We were given a lot of snacks, drinks, and Japanese sake!

It was our first time staying at a traditional Japanese ryokan with my family, and it was truly a wonderful experience. The breakfast was absolutely delicious, and the sukiyaki dinner is highly recommended. Everything was beautifully prepared and tasted amazing. All the staff were very kind and welcoming, and we would especially like to thank Monet for the wonderful care during our stay. It happened to snow on the day we arrived, which made the atmosphere even more special. We spent a relaxing day resting in the room and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. We had a great time and would love to stay again in the future.
Response from Property: Thank you very much for staying with us at Nazuna Kyoto Nijo-jo and for sharing such a lovely review of your first ryokan experience with your family. We are truly delighted to hear that you enjoyed both our breakfast and sukiyaki dinner. It brings us great joy to know that the meals, carefully prepared with seasonal ingredients and Kyoto-inspired flavors, became a memorable part of your stay. We are especially happy that Monet was able to take good care of you during your visit. She will be very pleased to hear your kind words, and we will make sure to share your message with her. It sounds wonderful that you were able to experience Kyoto in the snow. We are glad that this special moment, combined with the calm atmosphere of your room, allowed you to relax and spend meaningful time with your family. At Nazuna Kyoto Nijo-jo, we strive every day to create peaceful and heartfelt experiences for our guests, and your warm feedback truly encourages our entire team. Thank you once again for choosing to stay with us. We would be honored to welcome you and your family back in the future. Sincerely yours, Nazuna Kyoto Nijo-jo Reception Staff Yuka

I gave this hotel a 1 star because of our experience with the room. Having said that, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The following is reasons why I am leaving such a poor review: 1. You can hear everything in the room. Most people would think that this means it’s noisy. We could hear people talking and walking in the lobby as if they were in our room. It startled us several times. 2. There is a gate in the garden area in the back of the room. It is very loud and anyone can come into the garden which is messed up. In fact, the staff admitted while we were gone, other guests walked into our back door garden. This is a problem because the bath is in the garden, the shower is glass and attaches to the garden, and an all glass door with no curtain attaches to the garden as well. Very little privacy. 3. The hotel is in a very dark alley and not around any major area. My wife and I did not feel comfortable going back there after exploring at night time. 4. The room did not look like the pictures. From looking at pictures online, it seemed like a 4-5 star ryokan with all modern day amenities. The room seemed “dingy” and not what we had expected. Especially for the money. 5. From the pictures it also looks like it is its own small home like other ryokan's but in reality it's inside a small hotel and this room is right next to reception. We had a reservation to stay there for 4 nights and after being there for a couple of hours we left to go to another hotel. Even after they told us about the people essentially in our room and we told them that we were leaving, they did not allow us to get even a partial refund. Please save your time and money and stay somewhere else.
Response from Property: We sincerely apologize for the discomfort you experienced during your recent stay with us. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude for taking the time to share your valuable feedback. We are truly sorry that we were not able to meet your expectations regarding the privacy and tranquility of your room. We fully understand how important it is for our guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in a peaceful environment. With regard to your comment that “a staff member admitted another guest entered the private garden,” we would like to clarify that no such incident has been confirmed. At our property, we are committed to protecting the privacy and safety of all guests. Our staff do not enter the private garden areas while guests are staying, and other guests are not permitted to access those areas. We sincerely apologize that our explanation at the time was insufficient and caused concern or misunderstanding. We have also carefully noted your comments about noise, brightness, and location. Please rest assured that your feedback has been shared with our management team and will be taken into consideration for future improvements. Additionally, we are reviewing our photos and room descriptions to ensure they more accurately reflect the actual experience. Once again, we deeply regret that your stay did not meet your expectations, and we truly appreciate your valuable input, which will help us enhance our service moving forward. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. Sincerely yours Nazuna Kyoto Nijo-jo
