Reviews of Mercure Hotel Plaza Magdeburg

An old fashioned hotel with traditional decoration. The bed is comfortable and the shower is powerful enough in a cozy room. There is even a real fireplace in the hotel hall. However, sometimes the facilities are too old to ensure their functions. For instance, the heater is not hot enough and the bed sheet is a bit yellow. Conclusively this hotel is satisfying and I would like to recommend it to my friends for the next time.

The hotel is about a 20-minute tram ride from the train station. Check-in was not the best feature of this hotel. I asked about a safe for my valuables, but the check-in receptionist did not know whether the rooms had safes. I asked about it in the reception area, and the answer was no. There was no safe in the room either. The rooms are old, with outdated furniture. The pillows on the bed were flat and very uncomfortable. I did not have breakfast during my stay at the hotel. This hotel should be rated 1*. I have stayed in much nicer Ibis Budget Hotels. When I checked out, I said thank you, and the old man behind the desk replied with just a grunt.

We booked this hotel late at night as we were passing through Germany. We thought that we couldn't go wrong with a 4* Mercure hotel and we were wrong. I wish I looked at the pics before booking. Absolutely the worst place we have ever stayed at. Rooms from 1960 with broken windows, dirty carpets with holes in them. No air-conditioning or even fans. The only good thing about it was the lady at reception who could probably see our shock when we got there.

Family-run hotel that was only sparsely occupied on the weekend. Most of the rooms are quiet as they face the inner courtyard or the side street. Very friendly and attentive staff, especially the two from the breakfast service and night reception. Bikes can be attached to stands in the inner courtyard and easily pushed through the hotel lobby at ground level through automatic doors. There are also plenty of places to sit in the courtyard, e.g. in the evening or for breakfast. These are available in a large hall in the neighboring building across the inner courtyard. The restaurant is due to reopen there soon. Despite very few people taking part in breakfast, there is a large selection. The scrambled eggs are made fresh to order. Negative: lack of air conditioning (fans can be borrowed) and somewhat worn dark wooden furniture from the "Neo-Biedermeyer" era.

Things seem to be going downhill. The underground car park is now closed and the Italian restaurant in the building is permanently closed. The rooms look old and are now really due for a comprehensive renovation. Motivated employees are still holding everything together well, but it is very clear that renovations will soon take place. I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I would like to come back once they have spruced things up.
