"The hotel is beautiful and clean. My only complaint is that the water kettle was unclean. We asked for a replacement, but they gave us one with the same problem, so we refrained from using it for the duration of our stay."

"Swissôtel Makkah has an amazing location right next to the Haram, which makes going to prayers super easy, and if you get a Kaaba view room the view is honestly beautiful. The staff are friendly and helpful, the breakfast has a good variety but can get crowded, and one of the best things is the direct access to the Clock Tower mall so everything you need is right there. Overall very convenient and comfortable, especially for Umrah."

"We were pleasantly surprised by how good our stay was. Yes, the room was small, but it was acceptable considering we were only around 10-15 minute walk to Masjidil Haram. A big shout out and thanks to the duty mánager, her name escapes me. But she was excellent at her job, súper friendly, managed to get us checked in by 1.30pm even though official check in time was 4pm. We were so grateful since we just completed umrah and were so tired. There are only 3 lifts, but *************, we never had to wait too long for it. Would we stay again, yes insyaallah!"

"I had a great stay at this hotel. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, and the staff were friendly, professional, and always willing to help. The overall service exceeded my expectations, and everything was organized very well. The only downside was the shuttle service. It wasn’t available consistently, and most of the time we had to wait longer than expected for it. Improving the shuttle frequency would make the experience even better. Other than that, everything was perfect. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would be happy to stay here again."

Makkah Hotels: Where to Stay Near Masjid al-Haram & Around the Holy City

About Makkah

Makkah is the spiritual center of the Islamic world, a city where ancient faith and modern engineering collide in the desert landscape. At its heart sits Masjid al-Haram, the world's largest mosque, encircling the cube-shaped Kaaba, the direction of prayer for over a billion Muslims and the focal point of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Towering above the sanctuary, the Abraj Al-Bait Towers hold records for the world's tallest clock tower and largest clock face, a vertical city of hotels and retail designed to serve the millions who arrive each year for Umrah and Hajj.

When to Book Makkah Hotels

  • Hotel prices in Makkah stay high year-round because of constant demand from Umrah and Hajj pilgrims. There is no true low season, only a less-intense one.
  • Hajj season pushes Makkah accommodation demand to its extreme. Hotels fill fast and rates surge well above the already-elevated baseline, so lock in your room the moment your Hajj dates are confirmed.
  • Budget-conscious travelers in Makkah can cut costs by booking hotels farther from Masjid al-Haram and walking to the mosque instead of paying the premium for doorstep proximity.
  • When scouting budget hotels in Makkah, past travelers consistently rank cleanliness, safety, and a quiet room above luxury extras or Haram-facing windows.
  • For Hajj and Ramadan stays in Makkah, book 6 to 12 months ahead. For off-peak Umrah travel, 3 to 6 months out is typically enough to secure good availability.
  • Trip.com's off-peak booking windows for Makkah hotels align with mid-January through February (20-35% off), mid-April and June (15-30% off), and October through November (20-40% off).
  • When reserving Makkah hotels on Trip.com, Tuesday and Wednesday check-ins tend to return lower prices than weekend dates, when leisure and business booking traffic peaks.
  • Trip.com's Mega Sale and Dream Trip Festival campaigns run throughout the year and often carry Makkah hotel coupons and app-exclusive rates worth checking before you book.

Makkah Travel Essentials

Transport

  • The Haramain High Speed Railway links Makkah, Jeddah, and Madinah with electric trains reaching 300 km/h. During the 2023 Hajj season it reportedly moved over 750,000 passengers across more than 3,600 trips.
  • King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah sits about 100 km from Makkah. Pilgrims transfer onward via the Haramain HSR, dedicated shuttle buses, or private vehicles.
  • Uber and Careem both operate in Makkah. Traveler forums also rate Umrah Taxi Online, Taxi Arabia, Umrah Limo, and Umrah Taxi Service for local trips.

Food

  • The densest cluster of food courts and restaurants in Makkah sits around Masjid al-Haram and the Abraj Al Bait / Clock Towers complex, covering international, Middle Eastern, and fast-food options.
  • Hilton Suites Makkah houses four dining venues on-site: Alqandeel Restaurant (buffet with views), Asia Restaurant (oriental cuisine), Al-Khalil cafe (street-level, coffee), and Alkawkab Cafe (specialty beverages and light snacks).

Entry

  • US citizens need a valid passport (at least six months from entry) and a Saudi visa. The tourist eVisa is available online, valid for one year with multiple entries and stays of up to 90 days per visit.
  • The eVisa covers tourism and Umrah but does not grant access for Hajj. A separate Hajj visa is mandatory for the Hajj pilgrimage.
  • The Saudi Riyal (SAR) is pegged at roughly 1 USD = 3.75 SAR. Credit cards and mobile payments are widely accepted at Makkah hotels, malls, and restaurants; carry cash in SAR for smaller shops and street vendors.

Weather

  • Makkah has a hot desert climate. Summer daytime highs from June through September regularly exceed 40°C (104°F), and June through August is not recommended for general tourism.
  • The best window to visit Makkah is October to February, when temperatures range from 18°C to 30°C (64-86°F). Winter daytime highs run 30-32°C (86-90°F) with nights cooling to 18-20°C (64-68°F).
  • Annual rainfall in Makkah is very low (roughly 112 mm / 4.4 inches per year, though estimates vary by source), concentrated almost entirely from November to January. Flash floods are a known risk despite the low totals, and dust storms are common in summer.

※ Prices and policies vary by season and are subject to change. Confirm with official sources before booking.
