Hotel Calypso

Marsalforn|0.37km from city center
This hotel was built in the 1960s, which is obvious from the design. The position is perfect, looking over the bay. On the whole, the hotel is good - the rooms are fine, but the bathroom was a bit tired - black bits in the grouting and an old-fashioned shower, but it worked fine. It was definitely worth requesting a sea view room with balcony. The Reception area was attractive and the breakfast dining room was nice. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were really good - the best, creamiest scrambled egg I have ever had! The room was cleaned every day, with fresh towels if you needed them. Tea and coffee also replenished every day. However, the balcony furniture was ANCIENT - scratched and painted brown and really unattractive. And the balcony railings desperately needed a coat of paint. Due to the live music that is played in various forms most evenings in the rooftop bar area, it is also definitely worth requesting a room that is NOT on the 5th floor directly beneath it! We emailed the hotel a couple of days before, after reading other reivews regarding this, and were given a 4th floor room which had a fantastic view over the bay. Lovely to watch the fishermen coming in and out of the little harbour every morning and evening. The (indoor) bar on the rooftop was nice enough. We didn't have any evening meals in the hotel, so can't comment on those. But then we come to the rooftop/pool area itself. Dismal. One wall looked as though it had had one coat of paint when it needed two; another had not been painted at all. Ragged parasols tied up with bits of wire. The blue paint round the pool itself looked as if had been painted on by a 2-year old. And - the worst - flapping, green, *****s of Astroturf that, in the UK, would be considered a safety hazard as it wasn't fastened down at all. It was really quite depressing up there. But there were plenty of sunbeds, thank goodness, and they were in decent condition, although we didn't spend too much time up there. To summarise, we had a nice time and I would stay there again, but there is definitely room for improvement in some areas, that wouldn't actually cost a ridiculous amount to do.
