On a holiday trip down south I had no doubt where we would be staying in Memphis; The Peabody Hotel is one of the most historic hostelries in the United States. Originally opened in 1869 and rebuilt and refurbished a number of times since, it is a Memphis icon and anyone who is anyone has stayed here while in town including seven Presidents, dozens of rock and roll and blues singers, Hollywood actors by the score and even Margaret Thatcher. It played a pivotal role in John Grisham's breakout novel The Firm and Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman stayed here while making the film. Aside from the glitterati who have made The Peadody their Memphis home, it is even more famous for its legendary ducks who twice a day make their way from their rooftop palace to the fountain that is in the middle of the vast lobby. Led by the Duckmaster it is a very odd spectacle that as dumb as it sounds, is something I’ve always wanted to see. Arriving at The Peabody you can’t help but be impressed by the massive lobby with bars, restaurants and shops running off to the sides. In two days I was still discovering new places including a run in with Jack Daniel at the Corner Bar which receives an annual special edition bourbon made especially for this bar. You'll also find the Lansky Bros. clothing store here. Although not originally at this location, it was from the Lansky's that Elvis bought his regular clothes, along with Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. Since then it has used the motto ' Dress like a Rock Star' and countless others from Carlos Santana to Drake have followed in the Memphis singers' footsteps. Who knows who you might run into here? Coming here during the holiday season is quite special with a giant, and I mean giant, Christmas tree on one side of the lobby. There's also a substantial Christmas village featuring Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory which had to have a permanent guardian to prevent the little children from starting to eat parts of it. The Peabody offers free coffee to its guests in the pastry shop which I'm sure is a great loss leader as the pastries on offer are almost irresistible - white chocolate duck anyone? The duck theme continues to the rooms which have super comfortable linens and pillows and mini-bars of soap in the shape of a duck. All told there was nothing I would change about our stay at The Peabody, it lived up to our expectations in every respect and given the time of year was not nearly as expensive as I thought it would be. And yes we got to see the ducks march in from the balcony on the mezzanine.

My friend and I visited Memphis for a long weekend on 3rd April and chose The Peabody for its location and the duck parade. We were surprised and disappointed that the fountain was not full of water and ducks, given this is a selling point and tourist attraction. Even more surprised that it took a further 2 days to repair! We queued for an hour to watch the duck parade which was very cute, but would have been delighted to have a special area reserved for hotel guests to save the long tedious wait and bad back/knee issues. A suggestion going forwards. The bathroom in our room was tiny and we were unable to shut the door each time we showered due to lack of space. Why in 2024 are shower curtains still a thing?? Who uses a bath in 2024? A walk-in shower unit would be much better use of the small space. Having pointed out improvements that could be made, we had a great time in the hotel. The bed was comfortable, staff at reception and concierge were fantastic. We requested a coffee machine for our room as the queue in the morning in the cafe was slow and they ran out each time. The cocktails were tasty and service was quick by the pink ladies. To summarise, the staff were brilliant and made the ******* become less important. The location is very central and I would stay again if I visited Memphis.

Just returned from a two day-stay in April 2024. I was very surprised by my experience given the positive reviews on TripAdvisor My issues are the following: -Long walk from self park, including several sets of stairs with no help with baggage all the way up to the room -Two one hour "Walk-the-Ducks" shows each day, lobby and bar packed with 100's of people for both sessions, elevators blocked so you cannot get you to room, inconvenience and most likely a fire violation. Clearly a public show and the hotel lets this happen, while causing massive inconvenience for guests, the show could be five minutes long and could be managed without much guest inconvenience, most ***** attendees spend nothing at the hotel, management needs to focus on guests and not the non-paying public, who go to a free show, twice a day, and not a good one. -Half the bank of elevators did non work during my trip, long waits for elevators, stops on every floor as people push in, lots of conventions going on, packing the bar, and causing a 30 minute wait for a drink -Ice Machines broken on my floor, bar then refused to give be a bucket of ice -No fridge in room, no wine glasses or cork screw opener -Breakfast coffee shop often had 15/20 in line, not enough service staff -No greeter taking names at restaurant when you arrive, long waits despite restaurant being 50% empty, clear lack of staffing -Stale food being serviced at coffee shop, sandwiches and muffins I will say that the hotel staff seems to know there are problems and do offer discounts and credits, if asked, however, I would much rather have good service and working equipment, than credits

This is one of the most beautiful luxurious hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The rooms are huge, beds are so comfortable and inviting that if you didn’t have places to see and do you would lay in all day. The architecture is amazing and the march of the ducks is extremely cute….” As is the duck master” 😉 If you want class then this hotel is for you

Well situated. Friendly staff. Very well presented establishment. A 3 hour long ‘ happy hour’ from 16:00-1900 is great value. Restaurant was better quality food and choice than most we have experienced in our 2 week stay in the states., if a little more pricey, but we were happy. My only problem was the parking fees. We used our car during our stay. Therefore , we had to pay each day to get out of the car park using the ticket issued as we entered the car park. Just under $30/24hrperiod. On checking out . The lady who booked our stay was given a bill of additional costs by the hotel. Drinks, taxes ( the Americans love to tax) and parking charges. The parking charges were for 2 days at $29.86 / day. Which she promptly paid. My problem is, the hotel issued us with the parking charge bill for 2 days which we paid upon checkout. But we still had to pay again to leave the car park after checkout. Now we are getting refunded, but this seems a backward/ overly complicated system / barefaced scam.
