Hydroussa Hotel Hydra

Hydra is beautiful serenity especially if you are coming from Athens. With no cars allowed on the island upon docking at the harbour you are greeted by donkeys and their owners to take your luggage to your accommodation. You have to take water taxi’s to reach any beaches (which are mostly pebbly so beach shoes are essential) Hydroussa Hotel is a convenient, easy (slightly uphill), 6 mins walk from the harbour. Located at the top of a gorgeous garden square at the end of the traditional, curved, Greek streets. There is a supermarket nearby (3 mins walk) and some eateries. The donkeys sleep outside the hotel and live side by side the local family of ducks and cats. It’s a sheer delight to walk back to your hotel and hear the quack of ducks, it’s one of the many small but lovely aspects of a stay at Hydroussa. We had a large room on the ground floor. Rooms are traditional and therefore basic but they have all the essentials. A good shower (over the bath), fridge, hair dryer and wardrobe space for clothes. There is a TV but we couldn’t get any international channels. The beds were wooden framed and comfortable with plenty of windows for natural air and light. We ate breakfast out on the terrace. It’s buffet with plenty of choice from the usual egg choice, meat plus continental, fresh bread, yoghurts, mousse and cakes. I still miss the Greek yoghurt with walnuts and honey. The staff are like a family, very welcoming and happy to give recommendations. This hotel is a peaceful heaven, one of the very few green and open places in Hydra, close to the harbor and no stairs to walk. It’s colonial atmosphere, nice furniture, high ceilings and helpful staff are a good contrast to Hydra’s busy and often crowded harbor. Breakfast in the patio is exquisite and make you want to stay there with a good book. Very quiet and efficient AC

A beautiful old building that is fully renovated. An attentive and welcoming service. The bedsheets were perfectly pressed and fresh daily. Hydra is a fantastic destination and Hydrousa should be the hotel of choice. The breakfast was simple but creative, tasty and very satisfying.

This beautiful hotel in an old mansion has the best staff, especially Zoi at the desk, Billy the waiter, and Magda the waitress at the wonderful courtyard. They made our visit very enjoyable. The location is great, and the area quiet. The breakfast is very nice. I highly recommend this hotel.

Everything was exactly as needed and more. One night at $144EU was a fair charge, including a very nice breakfast. Strongly recommend. Room was small but adequate, bathroom and walk in shower were fine.

The check in took longer than the boat from Athens. The front desk manager was too busy arguing with a service person. I asked to buy a bottle of water and he said there was a complimentary bottle of water in the fridge in the room. Two days later, I never found the fridge. The employees were sullen and not very helpful. The breakfast was horrible. A sip of the coffee reminded me of stale tea bags mixed with coffee grounds. The hotel itself is beautiful and in a great location. But the staff need training. The rooms are not soundproof. They gave me a room behind the front desk and got woken up at the crack of dawn.

Having failed to upload a review when I visited last September, a recent poor review has spurred me to say what I meant to say then… I really enjoyed my visit. I chose the hotel, in part, because it advertised air condition, WiFi and location, and looked nice. And that turned out to be spot on. I had a comfortable room on the ground floor, found the staff helpful, loved the ambience and enjoyed the breakfast. It didn’t provide the full English/full American, but that wasn’t what I was expecting. Loved the tasty and leisurely breakfast in the courtyard, watching the world and the donkeys go by, and slipping pieces of sausage to the ginger kitten who seemed to have taken over the breakfast area. Probably not allowed, but the breakfast waitress was clearly a cat lover too, when she wasn’t singing (and singing rather well). A short stroll from the waterfront and so I didn’t need to trouble the donkeys with my wheeled suitcase, and with a small park in front. Charming location. I’d happily stay again, if back in Hydra. Which I hope will be soon!

The newly renovated rooms are modern and clean. However, the breakfast is extremely poor and does not correspond to the price point of 250euro/night in low season (the prices increased after the renovation). It is basically like the breakfast of a 1960's hotel, absolutely not acceptable. In addition, what is most upsetting, is the almost inexistent soundproofing - you can hear every single word that is being said in the next rooms.

Excellent hotel , comfortable room , good wifi , excellent breakfast buffet included in price. Located less than ten minutes walk from the ferry port , there is a restaurant two minutes away which looked very decent but I didn't get to try it Staff were helpful and friendly , helped with bags , the room was ready despite my earlier than usual arrival. All in all a very good stay. A kettle in the room would be useful - Brits like me like their cups of tea ! - but one was provided quickly when I asked for one.
