A review in The Times rated the High Corner Inn as one of the cosiest pubs in England, so the first disappointment on arrival for our New Year’s Eve dinner was that the fire grate was empty. It was just after 7.30 and we were told that the kitchen closed in ten minutes. I repeat, this was new year’s Eve. Along with our menus we were given a list of food that was unavailable and were told there was only one remaining portion of fish and chips. We ordered some bar snacks while we waited for the main course, and these were more than substantial in size. It is unusual in any pub or restaurant to have to request cutlery and plates with your food but we had to request them at the bar as none were produced. One of the snacks was fried anchovies which, being a tiny fish, we assumed to be similar to whitebait but on arrival had the thickest, stodgiest batter and were pretty inedible. When the main courses were delivered all the starters were still on the table so we had to clear the dirty plates to the bar to make room. As for drinks, we had requested a jug of water, a couple of beers and a glass of white wine. Sauvignon blanc was suggested and a medium glass was brought but we were horrified to find when the bill came that this cost £12.20: way more than London prices. We’d also asked for some water but none came so we had to go to the bar and ask for some. The one portion of fish and chips available had such a tiny piece of fish which was once again enveloped in huge stodgy batter and surrounded by tepid chips. The other main courses were badly presented and deeply disappointing. We’ve been left wondering how this place could have had a good review in The Times. From other reviews it seems that the rooms are good and it must be lovely to wake up to the views in the middle of the Forest. But for anyone considering The High Corner Inn; by all means stay there but eat elsewhere.
