My husband and I stayed at the inn the week of our wedding and again for our anniversary! The inn is so charming, with the daily fresh snacks and cookies, the beautifully decorated breakfast room and the spacious back patio. We love staying here and would highly recommend it if you’re in Newport, it’s a great location, only a few minutes walking to shops, restaurants and the harbor!

We thoroughly enjoyed the peace & quiet, cleanliness, beauty, breakfast and staff at The Hilltop Inn. Liz was very helpful advising us on restaurants and activities in the area. We walked to most destinations which was pretty and convenient.

We spent a weekend in Newport and stayed at the Hilltop Inn for two nights. The inn is beautiful…room was spacious, huge bathroom, clean, and overall very nicely done. We also really loved the location since we were an easy walk to both Thames Street and Bellevue Drive. We were very dissatisfied with the breakfast though and the overall service. There was only one entree served which consisted of scrambled eggs, sausage, and banana bread. For someone who doesn’t eat eggs, there were no other option. When we asked if there was another option, the owner, Liz, said there wasn’t but begrudgingly brought out a very small cup of yogurt with granola. There was no juice or any other option for a drink except for coffee we had to get from a keurig or water from the snack area. You are asked when making a reservation if there are any allergies but this was more about preference. Typically when staying at an inn, the breakfast is one of the highlights with a couple options and also a small spread with fruit, baked goods, etc. but this was not the case here. In seems from past reviews that other guests have complained about the breakfast so it’s surprising that the owner doesn’t do anything to make it better for future guests or to be competitive with other inns in the area. Sadly, we went out to breakfast in town our second morning, In addition to the breakfast, when we checked in, Liz told us that they have coffee and tea 24 hours from the keurig in the breakfast room which is a wonderful feature. However, when I went to get coffee at 5:30am, there were no mugs out except for what was on the tables with the place settings for breakfast and I had to go searching through the kitchen cabinets to find one. This should have all been explained to us when we checked in. Also, housekeeping didn’t come clean our room until around 5pm which is typically a time when people are getting ready or relaxing before dinner. We ended up having to go downstairs and wait while our room was being cleaned. There are only 5 rooms in the inn so it doesn’t make sense why the rooms aren’t cleaned earlier in the day when people are out and about. We did have a nice stay despite these incidents, however, this would truly be a 5 star inn if these areas could be improved.

The location is perfect and the booking process was a delight. We were thrilled to find a room available during a very busy weekend in Newport. The room was not ready when we arrived at 2pm but we were able to leave our bags there and the staff member on duty showed us around. The room was quite dark, but that is often the case these days and with the warm sunshine, having closed blinds probably helped keep it cool. The temperature/climate control was absolutely fine and the bed was super-comfortable. Our bathroom was the one in the photos and it was HUGE. Very well appointed and everything worked. The ONLY thing that would stop us returning was that the breakfasts were terrible! I'm trying very hard to be fair, but the first morning for breakfast we were offered sausage, broccoli quiche and (home made) banana bread. These are all things that shout lunch to me...... I asked whether I might have some soft scrambled egg and toast instead. I was told that yes, she would make a scrambled egg, but there was no toast. No bread in the freezer to be able to make a piece of toast? Apparently not..... The egg was delicious and came with a little dish of blueberries instead of toast. Perfect. The banana bread was also delicious, but I'm not used to eating cake for breakfast! The 2nd morning we were told that the breakfast was scrambled eggs, bacon and hash browns. OK, at least that sounds more like breakfast. I again asked for soft scrambled eggs ("I like them runny") and toast instead of hash browns. Oh, still no toast. Wouldn't you think that if you have a guest who has asked for toast on morning one and you know they are staying for a 2nd night that someone might have run out to buy a loaf of bread so as to be able to make toast? Well, you might think that, but no-one did. When the eggs and bacon came, I was told that they had 'found' an English muffin (well, that's also not toast, but at least they tried). The scrambled egg was so hard you could cut it with a knife. It was inedible. When she came to clear the plate (with the uneaten egg) I pointed out that I had really wanted a soft scrambled egg and that what I was served tasted and looked like something that had come out of a warming drawer; her response was that they make their eggs in the oven. So, I was never going to get a soft scrambled egg as they had clearly been made hours ago and were sitting in the oven. I wonder why when I asked for a soft scrambled egg, I wasn't told that I couldn't have that as the eggs were already made and were sitting in the oven and she had no intention of breaking another egg just for me? If you are going to offer breakfast, please make it a nice experience, or just run Hilltop as a guest house with no breakfast service as there are plenty of places one can go in Newport to get a decent breakfast - just not at Hilltop! In fairness, you can make yourself a decent cup of tea as there is a real kettle on the sideboard beside the Keurig machi

We enjoyed our stay. They upgraded our room as we were the only guests. It's a beautiful home, but I was a bit disappointed with the meager breakfasts. A half of a waffle and small bowl of blueberries was underwhelming. I would also suggest they improve their wifi. We were unable to stream our Netflix, etc. The location was good and the staff pleasant.

My fiancée and I stayed here to celebrate a birthday and it was absolutely perfect from beginning to end! We booked the Touro Room, and it was lovely. Roomy, spacious, with a gorgeous bath and shower/tub combination that will tempt you to stay in and not even venture out into Newport! Liz, the innkeeper, is very sweet and welcoming, and made sure that we had everything that we needed. We would go back in a heartbeat, and would highly recommend the Inn to anyone staying in Newport.
