We have eaten here 3 times this week and each meal has been delicious. The staff are very attentive and very friendly. The roast dinner was to die for! We are staying in North Bovey and the pub is literally 1 minute walk away from our cottage!

What a fabulous stay! Booked in for a couple of nights to celebrate hubby’s birthday and we’ve loved every minute, it’s been everything I hoped and more. Room 2 is very spacious and decorated beautifully. We always travel with our two Labradors and sometimes lack of space can be a little challenging, no such trouble here. A warm and genuine welcome from all the team but a special thank you to Mark who went out of his way to ensure the perfect stay. Great walks from the door (with or without the dogs!) and lots of picturesque spots to visit close by if you’re driving. It’s worth looking at the website for updated photos of the rooms, as I notice lots on here are taken prior to the refurbishment. Make sure you book lunch/dinner, you won’t be disappointed. Sunday lunch in particular was so good! White chocolate Crème Brûlée was delicious. Thank you for a very special stay, hopefully we’ll be back for my birthday!

Location incredible. Beautiful areas to walk in. Dog friendly. Nice beer and food. My only suggestion would be that the menu be slightly less beefy. Mind you the beef is magnificent. Staff friendly and helpful. We stayed in room 3 which was beautifully refurbished. Mind you the stairs are very steep. We had a lovely stay.

The Ring of Bells in the village of North Bovey is open again! Smiley face. But they now only serve “posh” food! Great for dinner, or a special occasion, but we were tired walkers that just wanted a simple (organic) sandwich and a pint. Available were club or a steak sandwich’s at a pricey sum of £16.75? Look around at the clientele on a sunny lunch time and the majority were cyclists or walkers dropping in for a thirst quenching drink and a light bite to eat before heading on. We ended up sharing a tea cup size of chips @£5.50. As beautifully refurbished as The Ring of Bells is and we are grateful that it has reopened, we feel there needs to be something on the menu that caters for all clientele, after all, it still is the village pub.

Upon our folly in hoping to get a Sunday lunch somewhere without having booked, our frantic search led us to the Ring of Bells in North Bovey - a pub with one of the most lovely old buildings and idyllic settings Dartmoor has to offer. Upon arriving at around 2pm, the staff had already served most of their lunches, but were friendly and accomodating despite that we hadn't booked and managed to squeeze us in for 2.30 with drinks while we waited. The food was well worth the wait. We went for the very reasonably priced lamb with an incredible freshly home made mint sauce, at a portion size that matched the quality of the food which is rarely seen these days. Missed the opportunity to book this for father's day but will make up for it soon for dad's birthday treat! One of my best dining experiences this year and up there in best roast i've ever had. Can't wait for my next visit.

Excellent venue in the depths of Dartmoor. The food was superb, and the service beyond expected. They were short of staff due to second home owners pricing out the locals, but the staff were attentive and welcoming.

We had planned a 3 day walking break in this part of Devon and when looking for places to stay, The Ring of Bells description ticked all the boxes for us. We were not disappointed ….. The pub has been tastefully refurbished with comfortable rooms and luxury bathrooms. Dinner on both occasions was fantastic, including the 2 specials of the day and especially the steaks. The breakfast menu offered great choices and very well executed. The staff were very welcoming and attentive nothing was too much trouble. We look forward to returning soon!

I'm genuinely pleased to see this pub back open and do hope they listen to feedback from myself and other reviews. The organic ethos is all well and good but the basics of what makes a good pub are being over looked. Cleaning tables and clearing dirty glasses away should be higher up on staff priorities. More than once walked in to dirty tables and dirty glasses lined up . I even watched as the barman pushed the glasses along the bar so as to serve a customer and once this was done walked off still leaving the glasses. That is another issue - there never seems to be someone staioned behind the bar, so its hit and miss if you find someone serving. All the staff are knowledgeable on the products and very helpful, but it doesnt help to over look the basics. As you'd expect with any re-opening there are teething problems such as problamatic heating, hot water and limited menu. ( I understand due to delivery issues) but even getting a bag of crisps seems to be a challenge. Other reviews mention the lack of local (Devon) ales and I agree with this, on my visit Avocet (Exeter brewery) was on tap but unfortunately off that day. I'm sure these issues can all be ironed out and I look forward to visiting in the summer months and enjoying a meal in the garden., especially when the new grill is installed. As stated at the start I am pleased to see this pub re-open and wish it every success. It is after all a beautiful building in a beautiful location.

Well, I'm not sure where to start. The food experience was pretty bad. I could shred the chefs attempt, but it would be very unfair so soon after their takeover of this establishment. HOWEVER, we had the burger and apparently its an award winning burger! For the best part of £17.00 it should be. A pint of Atlantic Red was £5.70p, city prices in a village pub? Not a beer drinkers paradise for sure. Also for us the beer got two out of ten on the lets have an ale scale. For a touch under £30.00 a burger, side and a pint should really rock your socks off. Lets just say our socks fair stayed on! On the plus side the red wine was very good indeed. The entire food and drink offering is organic led, on the face of it not a bad USP. But as a result drink choices are limited to an unusually eclectic selection of wines, spirits and beers. All the staples one might expect to find are put in room 101, unfortunately they've all been tarred with the non organic brush. That aside, not serving local (Devon) brewed beers is perhaps foolhardy at best, most visitors requests are for ales that represent the terroir of Dartmoor and the county of Devon. That's why they're visiting us here and not Somerset, Dorset or Cornwall! As a result some of this demographic, from Bovey Castle types with fat wallets to locals, walkers, families and everything in between may well be confused by the offering. Also, simply based on their price points alone, they will really struggle to attract a regular local trade. The company behind this transformation does have another establishment that's doing well. Its in a unique position, but it's not part of a small village community with a very long history as a local's Inn . To transform this village hub to organic outpost they should perhaps consider what they have bought into. Its a really great pub in a beautiful village with all the facilities an Inn requires. Therefore we sincerely hope they can adjust and tweak their offerings to better reflect the nature of the building and its place in the wider community.
