I discovered Hotel du Couvent randomly as I have a conference in Cannes but have a deep love for Nice so I arrived a night early. Little did I know that I was to find a convent from the 1600s so lovingly restored and brought back to life as an amazing hotel property in the heart of Old Nice, literally steps away from the most charming and historic part of the city. A few friendly tips that are important to level set: 1.) By virtue of its amazing location in Old Town, which is not car friendly due to its very narrow streets, reaching the front door of the hotel is possible by its electric cart service (call the hotel to arrange pick up from a nearby street location) or by foot from a drop off location of your taxi or Uber driver close to the hotel (noting there is a bit of an uphill climb for those with a lot of luggage). In plain words, it is extremely difficult or impossible for regular car service to this hotel, so call ahead and coordinate that electric cart service, or be ready for 10-15 minute walk with an incline. 2.) There was no TV in my room, which was a standard king. Now, this was a convent- so I took this bold move as a genuine gesture to honor its history for thoughtful reflection sans TV. That said, the WiFi is FREE, so I was able use my iPad to stream entertainment seamlessly so I didn’t mind the lack of TV whatsoever. If you are a traveler who doesn’t use a mobile tablet or laptop or phone, then there are wonderful books in the room as well as writing materials to collect your thoughts. Plus, there’s plenty to do outside. Apart from this tips, be prepared to be fully impressed by the room accommodations (high ceilings, shutters for the windows to enhance privacy, fantastic water pressure in the shower, among a wonderful collection of room furniture and minibar items all from the region), the public spaces (the courtyard, gardens, and outlets (bar, restaurant, and bistro), and lastly a sublime pool nestled atop the garden with stunning views of the city. Lastly, the hotel staff led by their front office manager were nothing but incredibly warm, kind, and sincere in their commitment to the hotel guests. It’s rare when you can see a team of people who are so proud and love their property, and it was a consistent theme with this team. I could write so much more, but it’s futile to fully describe the experiences that are available to enjoy… I cannot wait to return when I have more time to fully immerse myself.
