I took my dog and my family out for a trip during the Chinese New Year. First of all, I love my pet very much. Because we are a family, we booked a large kang room. It is highly recommended for people who like to sleep on hard beds. If you like soft beds, you can choose other room types. The hotel is located on the right side of the north entrance of the ancient city. It is quieter if you live in the north. It takes about 18 minutes to walk to South Street. You can also take the shuttle bus to the scenic area with your dog like me, which costs 10 yuan per person. The hotel is very clean and the temperature is very warm in winter. I really like the design of the entire courtyard. It is a Chinese style with modern design. I think it is more comfortable than the old-fashioned ones in the ancient city. The service is also in place. If you have any needs, just WeChat and they will satisfy you!

The hotel is a historical building of the Qing Dynasty, a typical Pingyao Ming and Qing quadrangle courtyard with three courtyards and a beautiful-shaped courtyard. The components of the siheyuan include, in addition to the house door, there are inverted seats, courtyards, wings, middle doors, halls, and main rooms. The main house of the courtyard is spacious and high, and all the roofs from the houses are clean water tile ridge square and flat. The outer wall of the courtyard is solid and closed with deep and strict access control, but inside is your private courtyard. The inner courtyard is deep, quiet, and has a high roof ridge, looking at the balanced Yu, beautifully carved, and high lanterns hanging, preserving the original appearance of the Qing building. Great location, quiet neighborhood but not far from the center. The room is clean , comfortable and has the atmosphere of an old traditional home. It is the service that needs significant improvement to warrant the current four star rating. The price was for two people and yet, there was one tea bag per person, a very small roll of toilet paper and the facial tissue bixes were almost empty. The breakfast was no better: ine boiled egg, a small bun, a bowl of sweet porridge and a tiny slice (about one tenth) of a sweet potato and a root vegetable, with a tiny portion of pickled cabbage. For a mainland B&B well below standard. What’s more, the old nan who was on duty in the morning would pick up dirt from the floor while handling food with bare hands and had trouble finding toilet paper in the storage room while I waited outside in freezing weather. The host is friendly and helped with orientation and organizing transfers to the railway station, so with little improvement in service this could be a good choice for Pingyao.

A gorgeous accomodation which looks like a museum itself. The hosts are very friendly and extremely helpful. They respond to inquiries within minutes and guided us well through Pingyao.
As cars aren't allowed to pass the gate to the ancient town, it was very convenient that they offered us a transport from the North gate to the accomodation for no extra charge!
Our room was spacious, the beds were comfortable and there is an extremely nice outside area where one can try out the different vinegars and spirits produced by the hosts.

The layout of the hotel is very charming. The carvings on the pillars are super beautiful and antique. I couldn't help taking a lot of photos here. They are very photogenic. The boss and the boss lady are very nice. Not only did they pick me up and drop me off personally, but they also recommended places to eat and have fun. They didn't disappoint me at all. Knowing that it was my first time here, the boss lady also pointed out the must-see attractions in the ancient city. It is very close to the main street, and it only takes 5 minutes to walk there leisurely. It is very convenient. Shanxi people are so honest. I like it here very much! I will come again next time!

My stay at the Red Lantern Inn in Pingyao was absolutely unforgettable! From the moment I arrived, the owner was incredibly friendly and provided full-service hospitality. I was even greeted with a thoughtful gift of vinegar upon check-in. The hotel is unique and charming, not your typical modern hotel. The reception is located in a shop at the front, but the hotel's name is clearly displayed, making it easy to find. The directions on Trip.com were accurate, and although it’s a bit of a walk from the North Gate, it’s worth it.
The atmosphere of the inn is enchanting, transporting you to old-world China. The rooms are simply designed yet very comfortable. The hotel also offers traditional costume rentals for photos, which was a fun experience.
What truly stood out was the exceptional service. The owner helped us arrange a bus for sightseeing and even provided a free ride to the Pingyaogucheng Railway Station, despite it being quite far. The car was spacious and comfortable.
To top it all off, I experienced my first snowfall here, making my stay even more magical. I highly recommend the Red Lantern Inn to anyone visiting Pingyao. It’s a place that offers not just a stay, but an unforgettable cultural experience!

GGuest UserWe stayed at thos lovely hotel. Lovingly restored by the current owner Mr Wang. He is the 6th generation owner of the property.
Until 10 years ago it was a derelict and dilapidated building. He poured money, time, blood, sweat and tears to restore it
And it does feel and look like a traditional house.
You feel you are going back in time.
Firstly the customer service is way beyond the call of duty. Its so good, i would recommend staying with mr Wang at whatever hotel he runs.
He picked us at the Lower East Gate, and brought us to the hotel, then took nearly half an hour to explain in great detail where we need to visit, whether the sights be in the city or outside the city.
Some of his suggestions, not on the tour books were very good . For example he suggested 3 restaurants, and we avoided them thinking he was getting a kickback.on our 4th and last day we tried restaurant no 2 of his. And it was good , the food and service were good. The prices were average with other restaurants and we got a 10% discount being the hotel's guests. And remember we had eaten 10 meals by the time we came to his suggestions.
Another suggestion of Mr Wang was Ma family home - also a very good tip from him.
Everytime we had a request or question he always responded with enthusiasm.
On our last day we checked out at 4am and he still took us to the pick up point at that ungodly hour.
Yep Mr and Mrs Wang's customer service is just first class.
The room was large, queen deluxe double, and the furnishings were traditional chinese furniture made of Rosewood. Very Expensive furniture for a hotel room. Shower worked well and was hot. However be aware its chinese style wet floor system ie there is no shower curtain between the shower and a small part of the bathroom does get wet if youare not careful. MR Wang said it will be one his improvement on his priority list. Hopefully by the time you booked the problem will have been resolved
The hotel is very close to the main streets. About 5 min walk.
The city of pingyao is worth visiting, it is one of the very walled cities left in China, with its old buildings intact and people still living it. All the city walls are also intact. Magnificent at night.

It is reasonably priced, a bit out of the very center (meaning also out of tourists crowds that can be quite noisy in the evenings and mornings), but still close, has same old-style design as the more popular and well-established places that cater to foreigners, but priced twice as much. Pick-up and drop off service is provided - just contact the hotel in advance via phone using the reception of tour previous hotel - no one speaks English - it will solve your communication issue if you do not speak Chinese. At the place itself everyone is very eager to help - use your phone app to translate. Onwer helped me to buy tickets to Pingyao attractions and Terracota Army as I was heading to Xian next (available only through WeChat Pay that is in turn is not availablefor foreign tourists as of April 2023). If you go to Shuanglin temple, be sure to ask to buy tickets through WeChat for you as well. I was able to buy physical one by pure compassion of local guard who asked the staff to open ticket office just for me (Probably was the only foreigner in Pingyao at a time). Please also note that as of April 2023, the reconstruction works in the historical city parts are continuing, so, large chunks of the city within the walls are not looking as great as it could have been. The very center of the city is mostly untouched though and you can still come and explore. If going in spring, be prepared for the temperature swings. I got a temperature drop from 28C to 3C within 2 days by the moment I got to Pingyao. It was even snowing at night.

RRinMMReally love the hotel’s a**osphere. It is cool both scenery and weather. There aren’t much noice and people around the hotel, a little walk and you will reach some of the tourist’s attraction. Some employees can speak english or if not, wechat is the best help. They also booked taxi and drop us off by the taxi, the service was wonderful. Will stay here again if there’s a chance of visiting.

WWy JoonBeautiful hotel right in the center of Pingyao Ancient City, a few steps away from the northern end of the famed Ming & Qing Street. Easy to locate and the lady in the reception is friendly and helpful. The public areas are clean and well tended to and needless to say very instagramable. If you had visited the Wang or Qiao family compound, this hotel will let you experience living in one of those courtyard chambers. The room combines old and modern touches with a modern toilet and comfortable old styled bed. Strong heating and a strong hot shower ensures you feel comfortable during the colder months. Great feeling that your hotel is right in the middle of the ancient city after tiring day of walking. The complimentary transfer to the train station and vinegar gift upon check out is a nice touch. You won't regret staying here.

We took the high speed train arrived at Pingyaocheng station which is around 15 minutes away from the ancient city. When you enter the city wall gate, you will be amazed of the narrow streets and cobblestone road. Picked Yundingxuan hotel because it was closed to the North gate so
If the taxi was to dropped us off it’ll be a short walk but the driver dropped us off near the hotel because cars are not allowed within the main streets.
The hotel is closed to 200 years old and have characteristics of the Ming and Qing dynasties. I was born in Vietnam,
With roots to China but raised up in the US since I was 7 years old. I’ve seen Chinese movies but nothing will prepare you to the hotel and the ancient city. I was surprised how big the hotel complex was. All the staff were very nice, the main host spoke English, and the breakfasts were traditional Chinese breakfast. We stayed two nights and we felt safe throughout our visit. My wife and daughter appreciated the three hotel cats and all the felines throughout the city.
I’m sure the other hotels are fantastic and will give your a unique experience but I can vouch for Yundingxuan. Just be prepared to get out your comfort zone but be amazed by the visual and taste of Pingyao Ancient City.

PPanPivoI must highly recommend this wonderful hotel in the historic centre of Pingyao. The hotel is really authentic, well equipped, the room was beautiful and I didn't miss anything during my stay. The owner is very nice and helpful, he was able to help me with everything. The front desk is guarded by a small, beautiful dog who gives you a proper greeting. Everything is a short walk from the hotel yet it is in a quiet area where you won't be disturbed. Not choosing this hotel for my stay would be a big mistake. Thank you very much

Majitel je velmi milý a ochotný, se vším mi dokázal pomoci. Recepci hlídá malý, krásný pejsek, který vás náležitě přivítá. KKeaiderenzailvxingThe room was very clean. It was a great experience to experience Shanxi's Tukang culture. The air conditioner and shower water were very powerful. The location of the inn is excellent. It is in the city center, quiet in the bustle. It is not far from various attractions and famous restaurants in the ancient city. You will not have to worry about safety issues if you come back late at night. The owner of the inn was very nice. He helped us book tickets for the performance of ”Seeing Pingyao Again” before we arrived. When we arrived, he was very enthusiastic to help us with directions and introduce the features of the ancient city. The little brother from the inn also helped us pick up and drop off our luggage. Every night when we return to the inn, no matter how late it is, we can see the boss waiting for us at the door. The boss said that we should wait until all the guests have returned to the inn before sleeping. He is a very responsible and warm-hearted boss, which is great. The small courtyard of the inn is kept clean and hygienic, and you can leisurely drink a cup of Kung Fu tea, which is very relaxing. Next time I come to Pingyao Ancient City, I will choose to stay here again.
