Best Apartments in Porto

We travelled with friends to Porto and couldn't have made a better choice than Torel 1884. From the moment we arrived until the very early morning we left the staff particularly were so attentive and kind. The rooms were spacious and well equipped and the breakfasts were amazing. We would urge you to stay here if visiting Porto or their sister hotel in Lisbon which we hope to visit this year, we wouldn't stay anywhere else.

A perfect apartment for our family - 3 kids, 8, 12 and 14. The loft had a couch that was turned into a bed for our 14 year old son. Our girls slept in the upstairs bedroom and we slept in the downstairs bedroom. There were 3 very large full bathrooms with double sinks. Beds were comfortable, the living area was large and a full kitchen and a washing machine which came in very handy. Great friendly staff and their breakfast was amazing. The location was perfect, right by the Cathedral Se and walking distance to everything! Our favorite spot was ”Base Porto” right by the Clérigos Tower, about a 10 min walk. Grab some cushions and hang out in the park with a drink for a break from walking all those hills. If I had to include a negative, there are stairs to get up to the entrance, and the lift only goes to the first floor. Wasn't an issue for us, but may be for some. I would definitely stay here again.

I chose this hotel because I wanted to stay at a hotel with a view of the bridge. At night the bridge and the night view of the opposite shore were seen from the window, and it was a wonderful hotel as expected. I got a free port wine ticket that can be used at the restaurant of the hotel, and I enjoyed the view while drinking the port wine there. Probably every hotel, but we recommend that luggage is not too heavy because there are many slopes and stairs. Basically it was clean, but there was dust in some places.

Great location. Fantastic communications with reception - especially when we had to inform them that our flight was cancelled! Things to note is that the hotel is on a pedestrian street so you will have to walk a couple of minutes from being dropped off. Our apartment was lovely and quiet and maintained everyday. My only quibbles would be that the hairdryer needs to be modernised and a proper hairdryer placed in the room. Also the toiletries seemed watered down. We ended up going to get our own (and we know that Portugal has some fantastic brands). Breakfast was only served at 8am - 12noon (which was quite late for us on a couple of mornings) and if you get down for 8am - it’s a crazy situation with people queuing up! So, if you are an early riser (like us - you might want to get some provisions in). But, all in all - we enjoyed our stay here. Lovely gardens to just relax from the madness of Porto.

The location of the S.Bento Residences is terrific: across the street from the São Bento Station, the São Bento Metro stop, which has a lift and the Living Tours office, which is the meeting point for day tours to the Douro Valley. The studio we stayed in (line A facing the side of São Bento Station behind the façade of the old original building rather than facing Av. Dom Afonso Henriques) is beautifully decorated and light, as pictured on the website. However, it did seem smaller than the pictures suggest. There are two steps from the entry area to the living space, which was very clean except for the carpet, which is stained. The sofa, side chair and bed are quite low. There’s no closet, just a rail with hangars in the living area. A luggage rack or two would have been nice. The bathroom is very small with almost no room around the sink for toothpaste and toothbrushes. There is some storage under the sink. The shower has a handheld attachment with several settings. The shower partition only partially blocks water, so you have to be careful where it’s directed. The bath towels are lovely: large and thick. However, they are only replaced every three days. Washcloths are not provided so bring your own. Although there’s a washing machine, it cannot be used as a dryer, which would have been handy after we got soaked in a thunderstorm. The staff kindly gave us a drying rack. They patiently answered several questions during the booking process. One thing to watch for: although we had already paid for our entire stay, upon arrival we were asked to pay again. That error was fixed immediately. There’s only a tiny reception area and lift (no lobby). On the ground floor, there’s a trendy-looking burger restaurant that’s opened late, which we didn’t try. Ubers had no problem picking us up or dropping us off at S.Bento Residences.

Arrived from the airport to the terminal station and the distance to the hostel was close. There was a lift, so it was easy to move luggage and the staff was friendly. Free bottled water and Porto wine are provided. There were tableware and necessary kitchen tools to hammock simple cooking, and there was a refrigerator, so there was no inconvenience in eating. But the biggest downside was that there was no hair dryer, so I had to experience the inconvenience associated with it. I explained that people often take dryers, and they didn't have separate dryers, but I would suggest that you have a setup dryer. It was a good hostel except for this.

Wow- what a wonderful base to explore Porto. We were three females there for a few days and loved it. The manager was super helpful, we had a lovely welcome basket and the team who tidied and cleaned our to were exceptional. The beds, shower and all amenities were excellent - our nespresso pods, water, tea etc refilled daily and we even had a dishwasher! Super small shops close by where we bought local cheese, hams and bread - perfect for breakfast. Wonderful experience and would highly recommend.
