Prague Hotel Guide

As the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague was the first place in the world where the entire city was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site. It is known as the "City of a Thousand Towers". The streets have hardly changed in hundreds of years; it’s almost as if time there has stopped. The city itself is Prague's biggest attraction.

Prague's old city is beautifully constructed and has a strong artistic atmosphere. If your time is tight, you can head straight to the Old Town and castle for a 1-day tour. The Old Town and the Vltava Old Town are the heart of Prague, centered on the Old Town Square, surrounded by many colorful old buildings, including the town hall and Tyn Church. However, the highlight of walking in the Old City is the fairytale-like medieval streets and alleys. The shops in the Old Town are the best places to purchase souvenirs. The architecture of Charles Bridge over the river offers great views from early morning to evening.

Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in existence. The buildings on Castle Hill make it a must for visitors. The magnificent Gothic architecture of the St. Vitus Cathedral, and the glass windows painted inside by Mucha are masterpieces. The various huts in Zlata Ulicka also attract many tourists. There is also Kafka's former residence and the largest toy museum in Europe. On the top of the castle there are the former royal palace of the Holy Roman Emperor, the oldest church in Prague, St. George's Basilica and so on. Due to its high terrain, it is ideal for people who want to get a good look at city's vast red roofs.

Down from Castle Hill is the oldest Lesser Town with a lot of old Baroque buildings worth visiting. You can learn about Kafka’s life at the Franz Kafka Museum, or visit the Lennon Wall. Petrin Hill, south of the Lesser Town, is a public park and is a relatively small place overlooking the Old City. The Strahov Monastery at the foot of the hill has one of the world’s most beautiful libraries. Compared to the Old City, Prague's new town has few attractions but it is good for hotels and shopping. The biggest highlight is the "Dancing House", a novelty building on the bank of the Vltava River.

Prague has a typical temperate continental humid climate; cold and dry in winter, warm and humid in summer. The average temperature in July is 18.5 degrees Celsius, and in January is -1.1 degrees Celsius. In Prague, various festivals are held in May. The December Christmas Market is also very popular.

The heart of Prague, with the Old Town Square as the center, is within walking distance of beautiful medieval buildings and has two subway lines making travel very convenient. There are plenty of hotels in Prague with some rooms giving you great views of the Old Town.
