Minareto

Minareto

Siracusa|3.99km from city center
We booked a ”villa” with a pool at this resort in May 2023 so that we could stay in one place with our son, daughter-in-law and toddler grandson. The pool had no shallow end, and was freezing cold. The villa had no ”kitchen” or ”family/dining room” area, except for a tiny table near the coffee maker at the back patio door. The weather vacillated between warm and cold temperatures, sometimes rain, and the resort has no amenities for families except for the beach. The beach and sea were nice, when the weather was good. There is no bar, no game room, no casual dining area open all day. The front lobby is a big, pretentious marble-floored atrium. There is no life in it, except for one person at the front desk. The resort was understaffed. The dining room was cold and unfriendly, with no variety in the morning buffet food. We never ate dinner there because it did not open until 7:30 p.m., past our normal eating time, especially with our toddler. The only other option for eating during ”off” hours was to have food delivered to the villa, which we had to do for several lunches and dinners. Eating restaurant plates of fancy food on your lap or tiny table squeezed into a tiny corner of the villa got old very quickly! The resort is not close to any other restaurants that are open all day or on the earlier side of the evening. The drive into Ortigia is about 20-30 minutes, including finding parking -- we did that a couple of times. We stayed at Minareto for 5 nights, and honestly, could not wait to leave. It was unbelievably expensive for the very poor set-up. It was not a good experience and I would not recommend for families. On top of that, the resort required us to pay a 50% deposit in advance through a bank transfer (which involved a trip to the bank, payment of a fee and a lot of hassle with my bank to get it right) -- it did not accept a credit card for the advance. We were allowed to pay the remaining balance by credit card when we checked out.

Borgo di Luce I Monasteri Golf Resort & Spa

Siracusa
After reading some of the reviews, I was a little worried about what the experience would be like. However, from the arrival, the staff were friendly and professional as well as being efficient. The rooms we had (three couples) were in the modern part of the hotel, overlooking the golf course with the pool to the front. They were all clean and well appointed with most things you'd need for a few days break. The service for the one dinner we had was great (especially the restaurant manager (Marco?) in a busy and pretty dining room, the food was good, not great but good and reasonably priced. Breakfasts were good with a good variety but I would agree with some of the other comments that freshly pressed orange juice would have been good to have. Lunch near the club house was nice but as many people finished playing gold at a similar time it could get busy and the service was sometimes a bit hit and miss but as the staff were friendly we found it more amusing that irritating. There was one waitress who looked very stressed and needed to smile a bit more! The pool which we though would be closed was actually open and we were able to swim along with quite a few others, it was missing a lifeguard which we were told about but that was not a problem (a bit chilly in October). The pool and surrounding area was lovely and well set out. Pool bar was shut as it was out of season. I has a massage which was excellent and reasonable priced however, the actual spa needs a bit of an update and was quite damp in places. Unfortunately the Turkish bath did not have heating (broken) but looked lovely. Overall, beautiful building and grounds (don't play golf so can't comment on the course but those that did thought it was ok), in a peaceful and tranquil position-bit expensive if you want to go to Syracuse (recommended) but then we knew it was roughly 20 minutes away (taxi for 6 was 60 euros). Staff were great and I'm glad we spent a long weekend there.

Island of Ortigia
Nice location on a side street within easy reach of the bridges between Ortiga and Syracuse. Close to the Ortiga market and great ice cream nearby. Comfortable room although slightly odd design with a very long but quite narrow bathroom. Had some difficulty closing the bathroom window which made the first night a bit noisy. Good hairdryer provided. The building is quite quirky so if you're lucky enough to go when the roof terrace is available for breakfast it involves a bit of an expedition up different staircases, along corridors and a final winding stair up. But it's well worth the journey as views from the terrace are gorgeous and a really lovely place to sit & people watch. Not much spare space to actually set out breakfast but they maximise what they do have and the cheesecake and tarts in particular were delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful and city maps available if you're doing detailed exploring. Overall a very good stay & would recommend. A little better soundproofing in the rooms against both internal and external noise would be useful.
Caportigia Boutique Hotel
4.5/544 Reviews
The hotel was small but stylish. Modern and very clean with twice a day fresh towels. I was very disappointed with the room that was given to us. It had windows that were frosted but we could not see outside. There was no mirror in bedroom but there was an iron and ironing board ( that was a plus). Bathroom was big but shower was slippery. The staff both at reception and at breakfast were extremely efficient, helpful and friendly. Breakfast was disappointing, too many wishy washy things and hot breakfast was extra. We asked for beach towels and we had to rent those. For the price of this hotel you would expect some things to be given to you as a matter of course. Jacuzzi was never used on the roof top garden and never saw any staff up there to offer any service. Parking was available for free but once you moved it was pot luck to find one again.

Grande Albergo Alfeo

4 star hotel in great location 500 meters south to Ortigia Island 2km to the north to reach the archaeological site park Rich variety of breakfast There is free parking on the side of the road at the entrance. There is an enthusiastic uncle in the shop opposite to tell me how to park better The roadside room is noisy due to the sweeping work in the early morning, but the balcony is great. There are gains and losses, right?
