The Great House at Sonning

Eye and Dunsden|2.5km from Loddon Brewery - Tap Yard , Farm Shop and Kitchen
We stayed at the Great House to celebrate a wedding anniversary and overall the hotel didn't disappoint. Check in was easy and our room was ready earlier than expected which is always a bonus. Our room was beautifully decorated with lovely touches such as pots of sweets, free water and some lovely classic touches such as the old phone. We had a river view room which is a bit of a stretch as you have to see over some rooftop vents to see it but that cant be helped and was very nice. The room was absolutely spotless and the bathroom in particular is very high spec which you would expect in a boutique hotel like this. The bathroom was incredibly hot but not a problem at all and a fan had been provided if it was or if the main room became too hot. We were woken up by a fire alarm which went on for about 15 seconds at about 9am and certainly was a bit of a shock and incredibly loud (which is a good thing in an alarm!) but wasn't ideal. The staff didn't mention anything but an apology would have been nice but we didn't raise it so maybe they weren't aware of the problem. The only other problem which we did raise was the service in the Coppa Club which is where breakfast is served. We ate there twice during our stay and both times encountered issues with service. We wouldn't have returned but felt obliged as Breakfast was included. Considering how lovely the hotel is and the service provided is superb it is a shame it is slightly tarnished by the next door restaurant. Overall would definitely recommend staying here and certainly didn't see any of the parties that some people complain about. Hopefully will be back soon.

Bull Inn

This is a beautiful quaint pub run by the fullers brewer.Quintessentially English it was a posting in many years ago on the route from London to Bath and beyond. The stables are now the kitchen and it is the kitchen I would like to highlight.Firstly is has a chef not a cook and the food is beautiful….however…and there is always a however, the portions are very small…..for example the octopus starter is one 6 inch tentacle……I saw it delivered to the table and the man’s face was absolute shock…..”£10 for that.I could buy a giant 🐙 octopus for the same price” he exclaimed.Woofed it down in 30secomds😂😂It’s a shame because the food is vey good. Open fire, good selection of ales and largest, fantastic staff, especially Ray behind the bar. Please Git this place it’s lovely……but don’t come here if your hungry😂😂
The Market House

I stayed at the Market House for one night to recover after a long flight. My room (room 1 on the first floor) delighted me. I loved the bright, quirky decoration, excellent, spotless bathroom, comfortable mattress and the superior tea/coffee selection. So much thought had gone into decorating and equipping the room. The heating (on a cold, cold day) was brilliant. I slept so well (note it was midweek and there was no noise from the bar below or on the street outside). Checking-in, however, could have been better -- I needed to make a phone call from the street outside -- and the staff member with whom I dealt appeared disappointingly subdued about Reading and about the hotel itself.

Lianna on Reception desk was simply a star so helpful professional and friendly as was everyone on reception desk. The Spa was lovely and the treatments were divine Sarh is amazing. Unfortunately The restaurant staff let the hotel side down Very embarrassing unprofessional and quite frankly what service. Was left waiting to be served and for our drinks to come. They didn't tend to ther tables people came in waited yo be served took so long they left. One server before our food has come had the check to ask us yo pay the bill as her shift was finishing and would be easier for her to do it now she hadn't even been serving us. When our food finally came mine the supreme chin was dry the potatoes were hard overdone My friend had the tuna which was served well done she wasnt asked how she'd like it cooked she also asked for chips on the side which didn't come with her main she had almost finished meal by the time chips finally came out Very disappointing However the change-over staff they were lovely it's a shame we didn't get served by them. The good part: Staff are very friendly although check-in seems to take a little longer than Premier Inn, the reception area and seating to relax looks fantastic and the pizzas that the staff make 24/7 are absolutely delicious. The drink & pizza prices are reasonable. Location wise is spot on, just a two minute walk from the train station and central to everything. They provide more variety of tea & coffee in rooms, such as fruit & herbal teas, and decaff coffee, this totally beats any other budget hotel. Bad points: This is a cashless hotel & this is something i'm firmly against for a variety of reasons they lost £200 in sales due to this from myself & friends. The pillows are rock hard and kept waking up with a sore neck, the beds are also uncomfortable and feels like your sleeping on the floor. The noise from housekeeping is absolutely atrocious all you hear from several floors above and below, are the staff dragging large heavy trollies around and this goes on from 11am to 4pm if you need to sleep during the day forget it. The toilets smell of sewage & urine so sometimes you return back to your room and it stinks. There is also construction work ongoing Monday-Friday until Nov 2022 yet the prices are still very high. The cooling systems seem to work fine for an hour or so but then quickly the room becomes stuffy and warm, due to the location having the window open is very noisy especially at weekends.

Good location, five minutes walk from Reading Railway Station. The entrance is a street garden. Opposite is the office building. The room was on the back floor and looked like a new one, but it didn't taste much. The room is large, the bathroom is large, and it is very comfortable. Breakfast is not bad, there are not many options, but it tastes good. There is a parking lot.

Awful location right in centre of Reading where there is absolutely NO PARKING anywhere near the hotel. You cannot even stop just outside to set passengers down or drop luggage as it is entirely surrounded by double RED lines - no stopping at any time. You have to park in a long stay car park at the Railway Station, which is a good 7 or 8 minutes walk away, and carry your luggage to the hotel yourself. Lad who checked us in was so helpful. He not only found me some additional pillows and brought them to the room very quickly, but he also booked a cab for us to our restaurant at the Oracle. On the other hand, the girl on duty this morning obviously could not give a toss when I reported that our air conditioning did not work and our toilet did not flush. As it was the hottest day on record yesterday, we had to try to sleep with a tiny window open to get any air, which of course (in a city centre) was noisy. As for the toilet, the very least I demand of any hotel room is that I get a functioning toilet. I had to take the plastic inner from the waste bin in the bathroom and fill it with water in the sink and then tip it into the toilet to get rid of our waste. Not pleasant. And this was in the £340 a night Rocket suite! Girl on duty's response - ”I will tell maintenance”. Not even a ”sorry to hear that” let alone any offer of compensation by reducing the bill. Awful. Will never stay here again.
