We chose the Grand due to its proximity to Imola Circuit, approximately 20 minutes drive away. The hotel has an imposing presence in the town, is set in extensive, leafy grounds, and retains many fine architectural attributes. Initial impressions are of a place a little lost in time - ‘faded grandeur’ you might say. But over the week, we grew to really like the hotel, and to appreciate its fin de siècle charms (not least the quirky, antique Siegler elevator). Aside from some naff furniture in the bar, communal areas are tasteful and sympathetic to the period, and the restaurant has likely been the height of sophistication in its time, boasting high ceilings, marble flooring and a grand terrace. Again, it initially evoked vibes from a bygone era, of set table d’hote menus, velvet drapes and dried flower arrangements…. but within a short time our eyes instead zoned in only on its handsome, elegant features. Food was a mixed bag but keenly priced at €30 for a 3 course dinner, and service, kind and helpful. The inclusive buffet breakfast was generous and varied, and I always feel the love when there’s sparkling wine provided for my morning mimosa! Our standard room was unremarkable, but thanks to the comfortable bed, large windows (in both bedroom and bathroom), high ceilings, plentiful electrical points and reliable WiFi, we were more than happy with it. We didn’t hear any noise, the shower had oomph, housekeeping did a thorough job, and the room had a fridge and kettle. Reception staff were friendly and helpful, and particularly good in responding promptly to emails. Other benefits of the Grand include ample parking and a bus stop on the doorstep. Just a short walk into the town too, where you’ll find a handful of eateries. I note that some reviewers express disappointment with the thermal baths, but this wasn’t the purpose of our visit so we can’t add any comments of relevance. For our needs, the hotel did an excellent job, at value, and we would return.
