Hotel Universel, Centre de Congres Riviere-Du-Loup

Riviere du Loup|2.54km from Rivière-du-Loup
We stayed at the Hotel Universel in July 2021 and were extremely satisfied with our visit at that time. The hotel which is pet friendly has rooms accessible from the back of the room to the parking lot, which proved to be a great asset for us. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable for the 2 of us and our medium sized dog. We booked a room for the end of July2022 3 weeks prior to travelling and were advised that there were no rooms accessible to the parking lot available but we would be accommodated with a first floor room not far from an exit. We arrived at the hotel and the check in staffer was friendly and polite and after asking about the best place to park, he suggested a specific outside door which he said was close to our room. He did not mention that this door led to a stairwell which had open stairs where one had to first climb up a flight of stairs and then go down a second flight to get to the area where the room was located (not fun with a dog who was terrified of open steps). Upon opening the door to the hallway, the smell of chlorine was unmistakable and then when we opened the door to the room, the chlorine odour was overwhelming. The sliding doors to the room opened to the indoor pool , not what we expected or were advised when booking. We went back to the front desk to request a change and were told the only other room available (hotel was fully booked because of long weekend elsewhere in Canada) was a room used for emergencies, such as a mistaken overbooking. We were shown the room (on the second floor beside the elevator) and it did not have a window! Not a great feeling of security in case of a fire and certainly not up to code anywhere in the civilized world. We chose to leave despite being advised by the front desk staffer that there were no other rooms available anywhere in the vicinity (true). We were throughly disappointed and angered by what happened here and had we been given specific information about the room in advance would have chosen to stay elsewhere. We did our 5.5 hour drive to our next destination which we had planned to do the next day. We are sadder but wiser and would recommend to future guests to ask very specific questions about their rooms when booking.

This is a top notch hotel with a great receptionist Josée@2006. The room was super clean, all staff members encountered were friendly. I was disappointed that the dinner room for the excellent buffet breakfast was closed because of COVID-19, but the grab and go paper bag breakfast was a great substitute: a yogourt, fruit cup, juice, cheese and muffin or croissant made it a good start for our day as well as the food cup of coffee. And if you are wondering, Josée@2006 is perfectly bilingual. We are looking forward to our next visit!

Super comfy beds and good pillows. The wifi was great. They say continental breakfast but they have hot food such as eggs, bacon and French toast plus more - They are definitely under selling the breakfast. I would drop the 'continental' part. IMO. Eat, sleep, Wifi . . . What more could you ask for?

Riviere-Du-Loup is a place to go whale watching. The location is very good, not far from the whale watching tourist centre, just 2 minutes by car. Late in the day, only one restaurant was found next to the hotel. There is a parking lot inside the hotel and crossing the road is a restaurant. Breakfast is average, very simple Western breakfast, quite a lot of people. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. We stayed in the middle of the car for one night and the overall feeling was good.

We stayed one night here on a road trip and this is a very nice, new and modern hotel. It has a wonderful view overlooking the St. Lawrence River, amazing sunset. I wish I had more time there to take a drink in the bar with bay windows or the high end restaurant. It made me want to visit again. (Also, for English speakers, they were perfectly accommodating when I lost control of my semi-workable French.) The hotel is a good base to explore the region. Above all: pay the extra money for a river view.
