Les Initiés

I visited Hôtel Bar Brasserie Les Initiés in Rouen on March 8th, a special day for me—it was both International Women’s Day and my birthday. The weather was beautiful, and I was in town for business while also celebrating. We sat outside on the lovely terrace and asked if they spoke English, to which we got a "yes." I then inquired if they had champagne, and the woman with short white hair confirmed they did, though she hesitated for a moment. I ordered two glasses, and as I watched, I saw the bartender inside open a bottle of Prosecco—a cheap brand I know well from my work in the industry. She served it as champagne and immediately presented the bill: €20. I couldn’t help but wonder—was this because we were tourists? Did they assume we wouldn’t know the difference? In France, a country so close to the Champagne region, you don’t expect this, especially in a central bar. I’ve worked in hospitality for years, particularly in the champagne business in the UK, and this was the first time I’ve ever seen Prosecco served as champagne—in France, of all places. Of course, I didn’t argue. I paid the bill and chose not to embarrass the waitress by asking to see the bottle in front of other guests. But it’s truly disappointing. If you're visiting, be mindful of what you're paying for—don’t let them fool you. Always check the quality of what you’re served.

Unfriendly staff. Like some other reviews it was a nightmare getting to the hotel. Room smelled musty and blanket was badly stained. Property could use a lot of TLC. Stairs were challenging at best. The location was good but I wouldn’t stay here again.

Picked this hotel, fully knowing it was two stars and on the cheaper side because of my short time in Rouen. I don't think I have had a worse experience in my life dealing with management, cleanliness, and liars. I initially booked two nights here, but after entering my room, that had a drop in ceiling panels, mold everywhere, a broken shower head that wouldn't hang and not drain, a tub coming off the wall, and luggage left from the previous person I quickly adjusted my plans to only stay here for one night. I attempted to contact the manager via the phone and what's app after seeing this disaster but nobody answered, and being in a foreign country, my options were limited. The following day I found the manager downstairs and showed him the pictures from the room, the conversation was cordial, he was apologetic, and offered to pay for the one night stay and not charge for the second night. My family and I thought all was well! NO! A few weeks later after checking the credit card, I saw they had billed for both nights, after clearly saying I wouldn't be charged for my stay. I quickly called ***********, explained my situation and was told that a complaint had been lodged against me! For reference, I have used *********** for over 100 stays and been to hundreds more hotels without incident. I provided pictures and was told I would hear back in 5 days. I unfortunately was only able to recoup not even a quarter of my stay from this dump. But beware for anyone that might stay here.
