I surprised my wife for her birthday by booking us into a 1920s murder mystery in this beautiful Victorian Gothic hotel. The overall experience was worth doing but the hotel 's amenities... weren't great. Like the previous reviewer, we also had issues with power in our room (Room 5). Fortunately no flashing bulbs, but no power at all. Even the lights in our end of the corridor were out and it's really odd that the staff supposedly hadn't noticed this until now. They eventually gave us an extra lamp, but there was no opportunity to move rooms nor was any other kind of compensation offered. Besides the lighting situation, the room looked tired and in need of some work doing: flaking skirting boards, broken curtain holders and tile cracks were all included - the latter were in the bathroom, with a big one in the bath area, which will become a BIG problem in the future if it's not fixed soon. But also, the carpet hadn't been hoovered as we found loose screws on the floor. I also noticed dead spiders in the downstairs Gents, so it seems the hotel takes shortcuts with their cleaning schedule. The bar was alright, and the bar staff were quick and attentive. Great choice of wines and spirits, but not much of a beer selection (mass-produced lagers and bottles of Doom Bar basically). The evening meal was also good overall, especially the cheesecake. The service was lacking though - all drinks orders involved us having to get up and visit the bar, which is difficult during a murder mystery, so I missed some bits. There was only one small jug of water brought to the table for all 10 of us and it was never refilled. The bread that came with the soup was stale. The main course took a while to come out, and it had blatantly been kept on the gantry for ages as the vegetables looked scorched. The dessert then took over half an hour to come out, and by the time they were serving coffee the murder mystery was already over. Breakfast-wise, service was almost non-existent. The full English was pretty average but at least it was hot, and they brought out extra eggs. There were no glasses or mugs anywhere and every single table was dirty. In the end I had to clear some plates away just to sit down and eat. Cutlery was just piled up on a tray by the TV, and there were no napkins. No one served coffee either, and when we went to get some ourselves the coffee was cheap instant coffee and really watered down. But the icing on the cake (which in a way was kind of funny), was making coffee in the room. As the kettle boiled, the steam set off the fire alarm! What's stranger is the first time round that didn't happen! So yeah, nice building from the outside, but the inside really needs work.

Yes, it is very worn and dated but it does have a retro 70's charm and provides very good value. Reception was polite and professional but could have been more supportive. We had a issue as our hotel booking site had not paid the hotel. The receptionist ask us to phone them to solve the issue. At better hotels, the reception would have offered to do provide this service. A lack of training? The location is excellent being in the centre of the city, across from the bus station and the transport museum. The views of the ruins of the old in the background and new in the foreground among other ancient and contemporary buildings is wonderful from the rooms at the rear of the hotel are wonderful. The balcony that some of the rooms to the rear have would be a very pleasant place to relax in good weather. The beds are very large and reasonably comfortable with clean beading. The carpet of our room was new, and others were being replaced as we were there. The state of the decor was adequate and past ready for a make-over. However, for the price and location, it was acceptable. The breakfast, which was included, was a pleasant surprise. The buffet breakfast room had a was cosy feel, there was a good selection of cereals, preserved fruits and yogurt. The full English breakfast was very well prepared and of good quality ingredients. The tea and coffee were also of a good standard. Service was professional and efficient, clearly aiming to provide their clients with a very pleasant start to their day.

My daughter had , her wedding here We stayed in the main house , for 2 nights. Our room was stunning with beautiful views, very large comfortable clean bed. If we needed anything nothing was too much trouble. A beautiful classy hotel with a stunning location. The wedding breakfast was amazing, all waiters and waitresses outstanding even the amazing breakfast staff. Thankyou . Big thankyou to Lucy who helped out on the big day and reassured my daughter with any concerns, staff went above and beyond to look after my elderly Mother also. My only small criticism...the drinks too pricey , maybe need a little review of these, Yet again nothing was too much trouble ☺ Thanks again Ansty for a beautiful stay We will be back , 💐 🎊

Very comfortable Stopover. This is a basic fairly dated motel but we had a friendly welcome. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. We didn’t dine here but breakfast started with a friendly welcome, good food selection with everything nicely cooked (hubby’s full English) as well as a good continental choice. I personally would have liked plain yogurt and muesli but I was very happy with what I had. Staff efficient and friendly and the chef knows how to poach an egg; bonus!

Room was clean and tidy, good value for the money. A good variety of TV channels and free WiFi, you can purchase films at £3.50 each but the selection could be bigger, and in this day and age I think £3.50 to watch a film is a but steep. Was surprise I had to pay for parking when I arrived at the hotel, a token should be given to guests for free parking. I could of driven straight out of the parking area as the barriers were not working, which the hotel knew about but still wanted me to pay the £6.50 for our overnight stay. Hotel reception, bar and restuarant was nice and modern but we only had one drink in the bar due to the prices, Pint of Heineken and half a coke was just under £8, so being just a 5 min walk into the town centre and 2 local pubs just a minutes walk away, we decided to eat out and drink out, saving ourselves a lot of cash. I'm happy to pay good money for good food, but the prices for food were just too high for a hotel restuarant, and nothing on the limited menu that my 13 year old daughter liked. This is a large hotel, so I think it would be good for management to extend there food menu for family's and at reasonable prices, even if it's just the bar menu. Opposite the hotel there are numerous outlets, restaurants, take away pizza, kebabs etc. Hotel is in a great locations. If you like playing pool, there is a Rielys pool bar 100yards from the hotel. Would I stay again? Yes I would, staff were friendly, hotel was clean, had a good night sleep, bed was comfy, shower worked fine, large TV, great location, local shops outside, walking distance into town, my only issue really, was that we had to pay for parking at the hotel, to stay at the hotel, I personally don't think that's ok.

Really had high hopes at first glance this hotel has so much promise, being from Coventry originally I'm so glad this iconic building has been transformed and I will say it's been done well in parts however the reason for my star rating is the following. I'm on my second night of two and sadly had to move rooms. I had Room 27 first walk in was a huge Big Double you could easily use this as a family room it was that spacious, the downside and I would soon find out is this room is a connecting room and unfortunately I had very loud neighbours to which let's say I could hear everything. I'm also not the only person too mention this on their reviews. I had to complain about the noise during the night and again in the morning. Room 27 I sadly also found the bed far too soft and had around four hours sleep. Worth a mention that Room 27 over looks the courtyard and again I found that to be quite loud. I'm already feeling drained having travelled 1000's of miles to attend a family funeral. I'm now in Room 315 and what a let down. This is not a Big Double. It has the same lovely touches that go into detail of the hotels history however the room is so small. It's not a connection room and is a corner room which is one thing. I've tried to sleep and can't again the bed is not to a great standard honestly I find premier inn have better quality beds and if it wasn't booked I would of happily of gone there tonight. Upon check out I'm going to ask for a 50% refund and won't settle for less as having no sleep goes along way for anyone during any hotel stay. I would rate the breakfast as 3 / 5 i t was nice enough but nothing special. The staff are friendly enough but sadly with no sleep and some rooms not what you think your getting ie Room 315 is definitely not a Big Double I do feel sold out and I'm just disappointed and drained. Dreading my journey home tomorrow now with no sleep. I will add sense writing this as I booked through a third party and raised my complaints I was spoken too on the room phone by a Manager who had informed me my third party had spoken too them and wanted to know what my complaint was. Once I informed them of the noise and bed quality of both rooms ie the beds they snapped down the phone to me that this is a new hotel and the beds are new. They wouldn't be issuing a refund and basically my complaint was shot down. I have worked for over 25 years in the hotel trade even owning my own business of running successful hotels and bnbs. None of my staff would speak down to a customer in such a manner. They did end the call with see how I get on if I can sleep and speak to them in the morning however my mind is made up. This hotel is being run by monkeys who couldn't manage to peel a banana, let alone run what is meant to be a 4 star hotel. It's a 3 star over all at best with no pool, the poor quality of beds,lacking an average breakfast, is not that of any four star hotel I have been at or run successfully. The reception team are kind and friendly . Housekeeping needs to improve as I found a hair band that doesn’t belong to us under the bed .The cups could be have done with another washing. The heater was not safe to use as it fused and arched, but that was sorted out. Make sure that you type in your vehicle number as you will get a parking fine that is e we hat happen to me. The amen
