San Clemente Inn

San Clemente|2.4km from city center
The Inn is adequate. The bed is comfortable. Everything was clean and well maintained. The small kitchen was clean and convenient. The WiFi is excellent. Good choices for cable TV. The furniture is not particularly comfortable. The downside and the reason we will not go back (this was our second stay in 4 years) is the rude woman at the reception desk. The Inn has a policy of deactivating your room key at 10 am on the day of check out, which they do not inform you of. We had to go back to leave a tip, turn on the dishwasher, and get the last bag. The cleaner at the far end of the balcony was not authorized to let us back in. We went to the office and a young man activated the key, no questions asked. After a couple of minutes to wrap up our exit, we went back to turn in the keys. We told a woman at the reception that it seemed rather small to deactivate the key on the top of the hour, which we had never experienced before in 50 years of travelling. She waived a paper at us and said we had signed it and therefore knew that the check out was 10 am. We asked if there is a grace period. She said there was, although nobody told us. This was the only interaction we had with staff other than the initial check in. Our experience is that this kind of authoritarian rudeness means there are other problems at the site. So we will not be returning. If you go, and you need a couple of extra minutes at check out, simply don't close your door and save yourself getting the paper waived in your face. Restaurants nearby that we liked: Fig, MRK, Hot N Chili (Indian), and the Riviera which is in the resort and we ate there twice. Definitely make the trip to Laguna Beach and eat at the Lumberyard on the main street, Forest Avenue, after you've enjoyed the beautiful shops. Make a reservation to visit the Hortense Miller house and garden in Laguna Beach for a refreshing and unique experience.

Hampton Inn & Suites San Clemente

San Clemente|2.17km from city center
Customer service is lacking in some of your employees. Colin, specifically, the front desk person should NOR be speaking to guests. When I called the front desk from my room asking for more pillows and blankets. Why? Because there were 4 people in the room, and the sofa bed is not the most comfortable. Colin answers the phone and said in an unfriendly tone: ”Let me see what I can do.”. That is not the way to talk to a customer. I asked him: ”What do you mean?”. He said: ”Some of the guests may have already taken all of the blankets and pillows.” Well, this is a hotel. I was under the assumption that hotels have extra pillows and blankets. Anyway, what a stupid way to answer! He could have said: ”No problem. I will have someone deliver those to you right away.” The nice gentleman who showed up from housekeeping came back to our room 4 times. He was the sweetest. I wish I remembered his name. He got us blankets, and then pillows. He even reminded me that we had pillows and blankets in the bag on the top of the closet. I also forgot that I needed an additional bath towel because there were only 3 in the bathroom. Once again, housekeeping gave me an extra towel. He was very customer-oriented UNLIKE Colin (from the front desk) who should not be working in this industry which entails being customer-focused. Maria was very good. She even helped me book the room for 7/16/2022 when I had a problem booking it online on 7/11/2022. She stayed on the phone with me until I got the booking confirmed. I had the opportunity to meet Maria when we checked out. She is very pleasant. On the other hand, Colin, should be reprimanded for bad customer service skills. He needs to GO. He also doesn't explain anything upon check-in. He rushed everything. He just handed me the key and asks me to refer to the card in the back of the key holder. He has no warmth.

This hotel was supposed to have a really awesome breakfast bar with pancakes, cereal, sausage, etc. Since it was covid it was just a bag with a breakfast sandwich to put in the microwave, an apple, a granola bar and muffin. Pretty lame! Also the jacuzzi chemicals must have been off because it left my skin super irritated - dry and itchy which is a sign of improper chemical balance. Also the first night the jacuzzi was hot, the next day it was just a bit warmer than the pool. I asked the front desk and they said, ”if no one is using it they don't turn on the heat.” Well how are they supposed to know when and if someone will use it? It should be ready to go all the time! They said if you call ahead they will turn it on. Also they charged a fee of $1 per night per room for a ”safe fee” (we had 2 rooms X 3 nights). Super unnecessary and just fee padding if you ask me! When asked to remove it they told me that it was ”too late” and it was part of my booking via bookings dot com. One light fixture was broken in the room and my son's bedside lights were broken. Also the phone charger next to the bed was broken. For the price we paid, I expected everything to be in good condition. As far as decor, whoever thought that crown molding should be used to make a ”curtain valance” had zero decorating skills. They also could have done without the crown molding and ”pillar” type thing attached to the pony wall as that was pretty cheesy. Just stick to a basic crown molding around the ceiling. Also the shower was really weird in terms of adjusting the water temp and the shower head needs to be higher. I'm almost 6” tall and not everyone is a damn shorty! Also, on the last day, housekeeping did not make up the room which meant a pile up of dirty towels, no clean towels and the trash overflowing. The location is ok but about 1.5 to 2 miles on the freeway from ”town”.

This is our second stay here in as many weeks. My husband and I stayed here a few nights before going on a cruise. The rooms and furnishings are very cozy. Can't say enough about the heavenly mattress! But, the cleanliness of the room was very sub par. When we checked in we were warmly welcomed and he told us the place is under renovations, so we gave them a lot of grace. But DON'T walk barefoot on the carpet in your room..... filthy! After our cruise we needed a place for a couple of nights before catching our plane back to Alaska. Why did we come back to this place? Lots of reasons. First and foremost we were treated well by all the workers we came in contact with. That is a very big deal. Second, the location is fantastic! And last (but not least) the price is reasonable. Why only 3 stars if I like it so well? Because I will be back, probably before the end of the year and I am hoping that management takes our input to heart and makes a few adjustments. One area to improve is the coffee in the room. It's TERRIBLE!!! (We love the fridge/freezer! Nice size, not too small like other places). Another improvement would be the wardrobe/dresser. It may be outdated according to some but I love the style. However, the doors on the one in our first room were missing, and off the hinges in our second room. Definitely needs more hangers also. But probably the best thing you could do for your guests would be to pay more attention to the cleaning details. I'll overlook the cracked tiles, or the ancient bathtub but not cobwebs on the ceiling or over the light fixtures. And certainly not the filthy floors, my feet were black on the bottom and I did not want to put them in my clean sheets! Please work with your cleaning staff and help them do a better job. This lovely property deserves it!

Nice people, clean place and comfortable bed. Daily maid service. Some people complain about the parking which can be tricky if you have a bigger car I would think, but I saw people doing it. There is three spots behind the building that sometimes are open and I have used. If you park in the cul-de-sac next to the building I'm pretty sure it seems safe to me I never had to do it though but I would have if needed. Decent water pressure in the shower and plenty of room to put your stuff. Good location close to the beaches. Budget hotel but not a dump at all just basic. I stayed last year and would again.
