The Sarasota Modern, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

Central Sarasota Sarasota|1.52km from city center
The Sarasota Modern is a hip, cool hotel with a Palm Springs 1960’s feel to it. It is located in the Rosemary district so it is about six blocks or a 12 minute walk to downtown. My friend and I stayed at this property for two nights 4/20-4/22/23. The rate was more affordable then the other surrounding hotels. My room was located on the fourth floor right next to the elevator, which initially concerned me. This room turned out to be the best room for me. I never heard the elevator or people getting on and off. This room was located away from the other hotel rooms so you never heard your neighbors. I had a large corner room with high ceilings, large bathroom and shower, refrigerator, small closet with safe and two bottled waters were replaced daily. The lighting in the bathroom is awful! It is so dimly lit that it is hard to put make up on or for men to shave. They provide a make up mirror, but the lighting on that was awful too. The shower was large enough for two people but there was no shelf or bench to put your personal shower items on. The wifi connection is a problem at this hotel. If you need to do work on your laptop computer, forget it. It is so slow and extremely frustrating. My iPhone was just as bad. Better service at surrounding coffee shops and restaurants. We had lunch at their restaurant Wink and cocktails at the pool bar. Staff is very friendly and efficient. The pool area is nice but on the smaller side. The cushions on the lounge chairs are badly stained and need to be replaced. Even on a crowded Friday afternoon, the pool area had a nice chill vibe to it which was enjoyable. The hotel has no shuttle service. You will need to Uber it to the airport, beach, etc. There is a free Trolley that you can pick up on Main Street that will take you over to Lido Beach. Overall we had a nice stay here and will probably come back again next time we’re in Sarasota.

Do yourself a favor and spend more money and stay in a nicer place. I’ve stayed in Super 8’s across the country. This wasn’t the worst but it definitely illustrates why Super 8’s have a bad reputation. Obviously not in the best part of town. It’s not close to anything but empty shopping centers. They say newly renovated but it’s the same grimy rusty fixtures and furniture. Lampshades were stained and torn. Our room was dirty. The family that owns the place is apathetic and sloppy. The man who checked us in looked like he had rolled out of bed, and indeed there was a comforter in the chair he was sitting in. The lobby is treated as a living room by the owners. Their personal belongings are on the furniture and it’s not very clean. When we went in the room, besides the bet being made we didn’t think it had been cleaned. The floor was sandy and sticky. The surfaces had crumbs on them. The bathroom counter had coffee packets opened on it. We pulled down the sheets to check the bed and saw a huge stain on the sheet right by the pillows. We called the owner in and showed the woman owner the stains on the bedsheets, etc. and she said it was fine and didn’t offer to get the sheets changed. She said the cleaning person was new and would come back. The cleaning lady was nice but that doesn’t explain the grime in other places. The fridge was filthy as was the microwave. The lamps didn’t all work. We didn’t dare sit in the chairS as they had stains. We didn’t get a full set of towels (washcloth, floor towel, hand towels, etc.) after asking several times we only got two bath towels. No soap or shampoo. No ice bucket because they use them to catch the condensation from the ac units. We didn’t want to stay after seeing how unclean the room was and after getting dismissed by the owner. The shower head was gross and had mildew and grime all on it. Unfortunately everything else was booked and like I said we have stayed in worse….so it was doable for one night. In the morning we loaded our car before going to get breakfast and witnessed a man sitting outside cutting his toe and hand nails. When he saw we were going inside for the breakfast he went in the office to set out the bread and waffles WITH the nail clipper in his hand. Totally gross. He didn’t clean or wash his hands. The butter and cream cheese he laid out had not been refrigerated so we didn’t feel it was safe to eat. He took out a “sleeve” of frozen waffles and just laid it ontop the counter then left the office to resume cutting his nails. That plus two loaves of bread (one which he opened with the nail clippers in his hand), stale cereal and Sunny-D was the “breakfast.” We felt only the frozen waffles he hadn’t touched was safe. But we had to go outside and find him to ask for syrup and he just handed us the big counter from under the cabinet. Another guest came in and took the rest of the waffles and we were told there was no more. It was quiet. The ac and hot water did work. But

I want to start by saying I knew this wasn’t a “resort hotel” when I made our reservation. But, this also isn’t a “resort hotel”. It isn’t on the beach & while nice, the pool is pretty standard as far as hotel pools. What this hotel does have going for it is it’s location in a different way. It is only 2 short blocks from the waterfront marina & park (a couple good restaurants there, boats & park activities) & is within easy walking distance of many very good restaurants, shopping & grocery stores. It is also an easy car ride (10-30 minutes depending on traffic) from at least 4 beaches as well as other restaurants. Our room was very spacious with plenty of space for the 3 of us (& could add a 4th with no problem). The lobby is nice & open with a bar that appeared popular. The exercise room had plenty of machines & space to workout. The pool was nice, if standard. We used both several times. The valets were nice & got to recognize us & talked to us every day, asked what we were planning & gave us suggestions. Definitely a hotel I’d consider staying at again if we return to Sarasota.
