As a business traveller, when I go to a hotel, I crave familiarity, as there are often enough surprises at work. At the Radisson Xing Guo, I had high expectations, check-in process was smooth and the room was nice. However, when I came back after work, the dirty cups were still inside my room and when I called down to front desk, they sent replacement glasses from room service without any spoons after a long wait. On my second day returning from work, there was only half the normal nunber of bottles of water. The continuous little errors were unfortuante as I never knew what else would go wrong. Hotel overall was nice, and should definitely spend more time training room servicing staff.

The room is large and spacious. Electric curtains and smart toilets are modern. The room also has a coffee machine. The locker is two very large. The luggage can be put in several pieces. The bedding and toiletries are very good. Breakfast is in the KFC downstairs. The hotel is in an excellent location. It is a short walk to many celebrities' former residences and check-in points. It is about half an hour's drive from Shanghai Station and Hongqiao Station. The subway takes about 15 minutes to walk. The restaurant in the hotel has a business package and a mushroom chicken package. The downside is that the toilet flushing is definitely not clean. During the leaking under the wash basin, I want to add a quilt. I started to say that I would add 250 yuan. Later, I asked for 100 yuan for the cleaning fee. In the end, I didn't add it. The service attitude is very good and the hotel is checked in in advance. The public space of the hotel is very large. There are very few people.

The price is great, the room is clean and tidy, a very well managed hotel, the staff is enthusiastic, and the service attitude is very good. There are many popular check-in spots around, and it takes a short walk to Wukang Road, Shangsheng New Institute, etc. This treasure hotel is my only choice in the future. I was able to experience what a luxury hotel is ♥️ It was a great place to welcome the new year of 2025. I could use an entire 3-story house in the style of old Shanghai, and it felt like I was in a village. Everything was perfect from the moment of check-in to check-out. Right after check-in, they accompanied me and gave me detailed and kind guidance from the way to the 1st to 3rd floor (+ rooftop). The staff were all professional and had affection and pride for Capella, which was nice. They thoughtfully recommended restaurants nearby because it was New Year's Day on January 1st, and they said they would help me with everything I needed. The room condition was also the best, and the welcome food, cake, was very delicious. It was secretly convenient that there were two bathrooms. I could control the sunlight with curtains on the windows, and the traditional Shanghai candy, traditional comics, and wooden bookshelf(?) that they gave me as a souvenir were impressive. The first floor door and small terrace(?) were also so beautiful and nice. I also liked that the living room and bedroom were on completely different floors. Usually, other hotels clean the room when you stay for more than 2 nights, but they cleaned the room meticulously every time you left. At first, I didn't think they would clean the room because it was only for 1 night, so I was a little surprised, but when I asked, they said they clean it meticulously every time you leave. The mother-of-pearl minibar was really nice. The library was also nice, and the chocolate was delicious! I was also able to eat breakfast at Pierre Gagnaire, and I was glad to have enjoyed Pierre Gagnaire in Korea. However, since I ordered a Chinese menu at a French restaurant, the breakfast wasn't that great! Hahaha Next time, I think it would be better to choose a French menu or just eat dinner. They even gave me a gift when I checked out, and even called a taxi for me. Although it was only for a day, I felt like a Chinese princess (?) I want to go on my next trip and visit other Capellas. Thank you♥️

We had an amazing stay at Blackstone M+!! The service at the reception and at Breakfast was fabulous. The suite was fantastic with plenty of space for 3 pax. Love the decor and the ammenities. The location is also the best, a short walk to Anfu Lou and a bike ride away from all the nouk and crannies of the French concession. Will Definitely stay here again next time! Love everything about it. Highly recommend.

I like this hotel very much. When we went there, it happened to be the 8th anniversary celebration of his family. We met the kind-hearted hotel owner Mr. Wang. She patiently told the hotel staff to take good care of us because my wife is pregnant. The spa and breakfast were very attentive to my wife's needs. The bedding was impeccable. I fell asleep as soon as I lay on it. It was very comfortable. All the supplies in the room were exquisite and high-end. It was really worth staying here. I could really relax. I, next time I come to Shanghai, I will definitely come back and stay here for a few more days. Finally, I bought their own pastries, and the box pattern was hand-painted by the beautiful proprietress, which has a beautiful meaning.

Taiyuan Villa is in a very good location, quiet in a busy city, with a nice garden view and a few kittens. The service staff is very professional. The room is relatively large, and although the facilities are old, it is full of historical and cultural atmosphere. Parking is free. The overall experience is very good and I will come again.

I had a generally good stay at Mia Hotel. Good service and staff. If you have chance to stay and your sleep is very light don’t get a room close to the elevator – the aisle is very narrow and you can hear easily people chatting when they get in and off. The place overall is a nice, the neighbour is great and you can’t find probably such a place like this one in the area.

Shanghai Hengshan Road Area Hotel Guide

Shanghai Travel

Shanghai, or “Hu” as the locals call it, is perched right at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Sure, it’s famous for its fast-paced business vibe and skyline, but honestly, there’s so much more to discover here beyond the glitz and glass towers.

Take a leisurely stroll along The Bund, where grand European-style buildings line the riverbank, with gorgeous views of the sleek skyscrapers in Lujiazui just across the water. Lose yourself in the charm of quiet streets lined with shikumen houses—traditional stone homes that have stood for over a century. Step back in time at Yu Garden, a peaceful oasis that feels like a slice of ancient China, or feel the buzz of Nanjing Road with its shops and street food.

Most travelers spend about 3–4 days exploring Shanghai, but if you’ve got extra time, consider adding a couple of days to visit nearby cities like Suzhou, Hangzhou. Shanghai is full of surprises—modern and traditional, fast and slow. So pack your bags and come see Shanghai for yourself!

Getting to and Around Shanghai

Alright, so you’re all set to explore Shanghai! Let’s talk about how to get there and get around. No matter if you’re flying, taking a train, or even arriving by bus, getting to Shanghai is as easy as it gets.

If you’re flying, Shanghai’s got two main airports: Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). Honestly, both airports are super convenient—it just depends on where you’re flying in from or heading to next.

Pudong Airport is about 45 kilometers from downtown and handles most international flights. You can get to the city by metro, an airport bus, or if you’re feeling fancy, the Maglev Train—it’s fast and kinda cool!

On the other hand, Shanghai Hongqiao airport is just 15 kilometers from the city center and mostly deals with domestic flights. You’ve got metro lines 2 and 10 to zip you straight to the action. If you’re looking to keep it simple, consider staying at one of the hotels near the PVG airports that offer shuttle services. It’s a lifesaver, especially when you’re tired from traveling or catching a red eye flights. Less stress, more time for fun—what’s not to love?

Once in the city, getting around is quite easy. The city’s metro is one of the best ways to get around—it’s fast, affordable, and connects to almost everywhere. Taxis and buses are also readily available, though traffic can get a bit busy at times.

  • Metro: Shanghai metro fares are based on distance. The first 6 km costs CNY 3, and each additional 10 km adds CNY 1. It’s quite affordable. Note that you’ll need to pass through security at both metro and train stations, so allow extra time for bag checks.
  • Buses (公交): Shanghai’s buses, or 公交, cover many routes but may be tricky for tourists. Fares start at CNY 2, and all buses are air-conditioned. For short trips, buses can be cheaper than the metro.
  • Taxis (出租车): Taxis are available, but it’s easier to book through an app than to hail one on the street. Fares start at CNY 14, and ride-sharing apps like Didi Chuxing can offer cheaper options (around 60-70% of regular taxi fares).

Best Districts to Stay in Shanghai

If you’re not sure where to stay, areas like Nanjing Road, or Jing’an District are great options.

Look, if you're visiting Shanghai for the first time, do yourself a favor and stay near Nanjing Road. I've had countless friends visit, and this area never disappoints! You'll be right next to The Bund, surrounded by amazing food spots, and the subway can zip you anywhere in the city.

Sure, Jing'an is lovely with its temples and fancy malls, Changning District is also really chill with beautiful parks like Shanghai Zoo and the beautiful Zhongshan Park.

Top Things to Do in Shanghai

Here are several top attractions for first-time visitors to explore!

  • Shanghai Disneyland: Shanghai Disneyland, opened in 2016, is Disney’s first park in mainland China. It's the only Disney park in the world to have a Zootopia-themed land, where you can join Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde on an exciting ride called “Zootopia: Hot Pursuit.” Plan your visit on a weekday if possible to avoid long queues.
  • The Bund: The Bund, stretching 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) along the Huangpu River, is the most symbolic spot of the city. Running from Waibaidu Bridge to Nanpu Bridge, it’s known for its gorgeous collection of 52 historic buildings in styles like Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism, and Renaissance. Despite being designed and built at different times, these buildings blend together beautifully.
  • Nanjing Road: Nanjing Road is Shanghai’s busiest shopping street and a favorite for both locals and visitors. You’ll find everything from high-end brands to traditional shops, along with plenty of places to grab a bite. It’s a great place to soak up the city’s energy, and it conveniently leads straight to The Bund.
  • Oriental Pearl Tower: In Pudong, the Shanghai Tower soars to 632 meters (2,074 feet), making it the tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world. The building is spirally upward, like the shape of Chinese dragon. From the 118th-floor observation deck, you can enjoy a close view of the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center, while also taking in sweeping views of the entire city. You can head up to observation decks for panoramic views of the city or even enjoy a meal in the revolving restaurant.
  • Yu Garden: For a glimpse of Shanghai’s traditional side, Yu Garden is the place to be. This 400-year-old garden is filled with elegant pavilions, koi ponds, and rockeries that create a peaceful escape from the city’s buzz. Just outside, the bustling bazaar offers everything from souvenirs to local snacks. It’s the perfect mix of serenity and energy, and a must-visit for anyone exploring Shanghai’s cultural heritage.

Know Before You Go to Shanghai

Before planing the trip to Shanghai, it's essential to keep a few things in mind.

Top Shanghai Cuisine

Shanghai cuisine, also known as Hu cuisine (沪菜), is a popular style of Chinese cooking that originates from Shanghai, a city with a rich culinary tradition that has absorbed influences from neighboring provinces such as Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Here are some popular dishes from Shanghai cuisine:

  • Shengjianbao (生煎包): Pan-fried buns filled with pork and gelatin that melts into soup when cooked, similar to xiaolongbao but with a thicker dough and a crispy bottom.
  • Sweet and sour spare ribs (糖醋排骨): Pork ribs cooked with a sauce that perfectly balances sweetness with a tangy vinegar kick.
  • Crab Roe Noodles (蟹黄捞面): Fresh noodles topped with creamy crab roe, offering a rich umami flavor.

GGuest UserThe front desk staff were friendly and kind. My room had a window facing a wall of the building next door, which isn't pleasant for a one-week stay but I wasn't there too often. The cleaning staff were also friendly and attentive and the room was cleaned daily. The big and soft butterscotch cat is a great addition to any hotel and the cafe out front is very popular. The setting overall is lovely. I didn't eat at the hotel but there are several cafes and restaurants nearby and the neighbourhood is great for exploring on foot or by bicycle.

GGuest UserI was really disappointed by my stay this time. I chose this hotel as I was traveling with a friend and I liked the size of the rooms the last time I stayed there. This time around, I stayed for a total of 8 nights. Usually, hotels will try to arrange for slightly better rooms for guests staying for longer, but in this case, my room was directly over the loading dock and I could hear the heavy trucks loading and unloading every morning and late afternoon/evening. Furthermore, it's immediately over the road, so most hours of the day, can hear all the hustle and bustle from outside. To add on to all this, the bed wasn't really clean and I had bites on my back after my stay, so not planning to stay there again.

The hotel's cost-effectiveness is also very high, which makes me feel that it is worth the money. I will not hesitate to recommend this hotel to my friends and family, and I believe they will also have a good time here. The hotel perfectly combines the historical charm of the old town with modern comfort and convenience, which left a deep impression on me. The homestay is on the side of the road. It is very noisy during the day. I didn't expect it to be noisy at night, which greatly affects sleep. The sanitation is not very good, the experience is very poor, the toilet light is broken, the room has a smell, the first time I stayed at the homestay, I didn't expect the first experience to be so bad, and no one added the paper towels in the room. But the photo is still very good, the location is good, suitable for taking pictures, but not suitable for staying for too long.
