Darwin's Townhouse

So glad we found this place, ideal for the centre of town, even though it’s a gradual up hill ! Staff are so welcoming and nothing is too much trouble for them. Breakfast is all home made- even the chocolate brownies! There is a choice of continental and cooked breakfast, loved the egg Benedict. Rooms from what I spoke to others varied in size, was nice and clean and had choices of hot drinks.The mattress was a bit hard, but that was just my personal choice. The bar was well stocked and and worked well with writing what you had and paid on check out. We will most certainly be visiting here again when in the area next.

For £440 for two nights in a king superior room I was expecting fairly good things from the Darwin's Townhouse. In terms of the positives – the location is great, the décor is mostly cute and quirky, the room was large and bright, the staff were friendly, responsive and professional and the breakfast was superb. On the not-so-positive side – the blinds in the room did not cover the whole windows, so we were woken up at 5am on both days with the sun coming through. A number of the pillows on the bed stank quite badly. There were mould stains around the bathtub. And the fake plants really don’t elevate the room experience. Pretty basic stuff you’d expect even a Travelodge to get right. Even more oddly when I mentioned the above when checking out, I was told the blinds do cover the windows and the pillows are new. Definitely a novel way to react to actionable feedback and tell your guest they are wrong.

Very conveniently located, sadly no carpark so include the cost of overnight parking in the price of the room. The rooms are clean but very tiny. On arrival we checked there was a vegan breakfast before deciding to eat there. The full vegan breakfasts states sausage, tomatoes, beans, spinach, mushrooms, toast, avocado, English muffin with vegan cream cheese. Well, there was one mushroom, one hash browns, half an English muffin, half a tomato, no toast, 3 spinach leaves, no cream cheese. At £10.95 it was a pitiful excuse for a breakfast, coffee extra on top. Compared to the meat option I'd say less than a quarter of the amount of food, so a little disappointed.

This is the best B&B we've ever stayed in and it's difficult to find any new superlatives which have not been stated in other reviews. Great Location. Wonderful character property tastefully decorated and kept immaculate. Bedroom cosy but very well appointed with comfy bed & all facilities. Breakfast fabulous selection of cereals & home baking and freshly prepared hot menu selection from the kitchen. Staff all friendly & helpful.
